To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIARTLEY A. Cannes. a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Neckties, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a fastener for neck-wear; and it consists of a button provided with a shank and terminal cross-piece, and of a slotted plate capable of a spring action, and constructcd, as fully set forth hereinafter, so that the two parts may be securely locked together by passingthe crosspiece ofthe button through the slot of the plate and turning the button to bring the cross-piece at right angles to the slot.

Fig. 4 is a section of the plate, showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a face view ofa plate, showing another modification. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the tie with the plate attached. Fig. 8 is a perspective view showing the button applied to a shirt and collar. Fig. 9 is a View illustrating the fastening device.
The device consists of two parts-the button A and the plate B. The button is provided with a head, a, of any suitable shape, with a flat shank, Z), a stem extending from the end of said shank, and a terminal triangular crosspiece, 6. The plate --B has a central opening, 1', adapted to the stem 0, and slots m an, extending from said opening in line with each other, and of such size as to permit the passage of the cross'piece e. for the purpose of introducing the stem 0 into the opening t. By then turning the button until the crosspiece 6 is at right angles to the line of the slots at m, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, the two parts are brought to such position that they cannot be separated without first turning the stem to bring the cross-piece in line with the slots. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the plate 13 is illustrated as being stamped or otherwise formed of a dished or curved shape, so as to guide the stem and crosspieces to the opening, and so that after the cross-piece c has been passed through the slots and the button is turned. the edges of the cross-piece will be brought to bear upon the convex face of the plate, and will spring the latter inward or flatten it adjacent to the opening, the tendency of the plate to recover its shape causing it to bear with a spring pressure against the cross-piece, and creating such friction as will prevent the button from turning readily. A greater frictional resist ance may be secured by indenting the convex face of the plate slightly at points on opposite sides of the opening 13 at right angles to the slotsm, so that the cross-piece will slip into said indentations y, Fig. 4, as the button is turned to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3. Where a greater spring effect is desired, the plate B may be slit along lines 8 s, Fig. 5, at right angles to and crossing the slots m, thus forming elastic tongues tt upon opposite sides of the slots at and opening Z. In this case the button is introduced into the slot and turned as before, the cross-piece bearing upon and springing down the tongues '6 until it occupies a position in the grooves 3 y, when the tongues will spring upward and hold the button from turning. The plate Bis secured either to the shield to which the necktie or scarf is to be attached or is connected directly to said tie or scarf, as shown in Fig. 7, and the button is passed from inside the shirt-band through the horizontal button-holes of the latter and the collar-band, the flat stem 1) of the button preventing the same from turning and holding it firmly in its position. The scarf or tie is then secured to the button by turning it to a Vertical position and bringing it against the end of the shank until the cross-piece passes through the slot, when the tie is turned to a horizontal position, in which it will be held, the flat shank of the button preventing the latter from turning, so that the tie will not swing to an angle in either direction. The plate 13 may be secured to the shield or tie in any suitable manner. For instance, it may be cut to leave sharp prongs w, which are passed through the material and then bent down, or it may be provided with eyes '10, adapted to be passed through openings in the shield and to receive spring-pins I, which may be readily introduced or withdrawn,and which Securely hold the parts in place.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown, I claim- 1. A fastener for neck-wear, consisting of a button having a flat shank terminating in a round stem and'cross-piece, and a plate dished at the center and having an opening and slots,
, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a fastening device, of a button having a flat shank terminating in a round stem and cross-piece, and a plate slotted to receive said cross-piece, and with elastic portions on opposite sides of the slot, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, in a fastening device, ofa button having a shank and terminal crosspiece, and aslotted plate adapted for the passage of the cross-piece, and-with indentations 3/ at opposite sides of the slot, for the purpose set forth.
4; The combination, with the stem of a fastening device, of the socket-piece consisting of a plate with recesses adapted to receive said stem, and provided with eyes a, adapted to receive spring-pins I, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the shield or other piece J, of a recessed socket, B, provided with eyes u, extending through openings in the shield, and spring-pins I, extending through said eyes, substantially as set forth.
