To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY F. SAWTELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of XVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in umbrellas; and it is particularly adapted for such purpose, although the invention, with a slight modification as to size and minor details, may be equally useful, for parasols, and as portable shades or tents for the use of artists when sketching or painting outdoors, or for similar purposes.

The invention is so constructed that when not in use the ribs, stays, and cover of the umbrella can be folded together and inelosed within the hollow stick, having thus the appearance of an ordinary stout walking-cane, and may then be used for such a purpose, and at the same time the cover, stays, and ribs of the umbrella are fully protected from injury and wear.

The invention is carried out as follows, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the invention when the umbrella is inelosed within its hollow stick. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same on the line A B shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal section of the invention when expanded for use as an umbrella. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the duplex joints at the inner ends of the ribs. Fig. 5 represents a sectional elevation on the line C D shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a detailed side elevation of the sliding ferrule that is made detachable from the lower ends of the stays, and Fig. 7 represents an enlarged cross section on the line E F shown in Fig. 3, and showing the flexible connecting device between the lower ends of the stays and the detachable ferrule.

(t represents the umbrella stick or handle, made hollow, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to serve as a case or-receptacle for the folded cover, ribs, and stays, as shown in Figs. 1 and '2, when the invention is not required for use as an umbrella. The upper end of hollow metal stick or handle a has secured to its inner end a plug, a, having a central screwthreaded spindle, a, projecting from it, adapted to pass through the central perforation, b, of the ring b, to which the inner ends of the ribs 0 c are jointed, as shown in Fig. 3.

a is a detachable point, made with a central internal screw-thread at its base, and adapted to be screwed over the screw-threaded spindle a, as shown in Fig. 8, to hold the ring 6 and inner portion of the cover (1 and its ribs 0 c in proper position while the umbrellais in use open or closed, as the case may be. After the cover has been detached from the handle and inelosed within the hollow handle a, the point a is screwed onto the spindle a", as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ring l) is not hinged directly to the inner ends of ribs 0 c, as is usual on ordinary umbrellas or parasols, for to enable the cover and ribs and stays e e to be folded together in the smallest space possible [find it necessary to hinge the in ner end of each rib c to an intermediate duplex joint, 0, each of such pieces being hinged in its inner end to the ring b, and in its outer end to the inner end of one of the ribs 0, as shown in detail in Figs. 4. and 5. y

e 0 represent the stays, hinged in their outer ends to the respective ribs 0 c in any of the usual ways, and in their inner ends to can elasticjoint or ring composed in part of chains 1/0, and in part of flexible springs e e, or in any other or equivalent elastic, expansive, or yielding manner, to produce an elastic ring or joint at this place, so as to permit said elastic ring to be pushed over the upper end of ferrule f, and to rest in the annular groovef, (shown in Figs. 6 and 7,) thereon when the umbrella is in use, and to be easily detached from said ferrule when not desired for use and preparatory to folding it within the 1101 low stick a.

g is a catch or locking spring hinged in its upper end at c to one of the duplex joints 0, as shown in Fig. 5, and provided in its upper end with an inwardly-projecting lip,.g, adapted to be confined between the upper end of stick a and under side of ring I) when the umbrella is in use, so as to prevent said locking spring g from swinging away from stick a when in such use. The lower end of springcatch 9 has a locking-notch, g, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, so as to lock on the inside of 5 ferrule f and keep the cover of the umbrella in an expanded position while in use, as shown in said Fig. 3. The ferrule f is provided in its lower end with a number of notches, f f, (shown in Figs. 3 and 6,) to engage with the looking projection g in the lower end of catch 9, as shown in said Figs.- 3 and 6.

h is a spring-catch riveted or otherwise secured to the handle a at h, and having locking projections h and h, extending outward I 5 through corresponding perforations in the shell a, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper looking projection, h, serves to hold the ferrule f down on the lower end of handle a when the umbrella is temporarily closed, and the lower projection, h, serves to hold the said ferrule f in its lowest position on the handle a when said ferrule is detached from the elastic joint connected to lower ends of stays e e and the cover of the umbrella is stowed away within handle a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

z is a hollow knob or cap adapted to close the lower open end of stick a when the umbrella is used as shown in Fig. 3, as well as when it is folded together and inclosed within the hollow handle a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said knob or cap may be screwed on the end of handle a or made detachable from it by means of a spring-catch or other wellknown or equivalent device to equal advantage.

Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. In a folding umbrella, the cover d and ribs 0 c, in combination with ring I) and intermediate duplex joints, 0 c, as and for the purposes set forth. 1
