Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\ THOMAS J. BOTTOMS, OF TIIOMASVILLE, GEORGIA.
HORSE-P OWER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,294, dated February 5, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BoTToMs, of Thomasville, Thomas county, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Power; and I declare hereby that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a plan View, Fig. 3 a section showing the sliding box, and part of the gearing.
Io enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe its construction and operation.
In F ig. l, A the main frame, B the driving shaft, C the main driving wheel, D pinion wheel, E gear wheel, F a second gear or pinion wheel on shaft G operating band wheel H, I, and K, band pulleys for tightening or slackening the band. L, the frames into which is set the sliding boxes as hereinafter described, c the cross piece above the ulley bands, c the cross ties to posts of rame L, e, the screw for raising and lowering the gearing, fl the screw nut.
In Fig. 2, like letters designate like parts.
In Fig. 3, L the posts, with cross tie c between which post the sliding box moves up or down, L the cross beam on which the shaft of gearing rests, and to which is attached slides g, which slides fit to post L and slide on said posts, f screw nut on screw c for forcing down the sliding box with gearing.
Like letters as in Fig. l, designate the like parts. The red lines show the gearing raised up out of gear.
In the operation of my invention it will be seen, that by double gearing the power, I use a much smallerv driving wheel than otherwise, and thus have a greater power of lever to move the gearing, and besides I can put my power in a much less space, than if single geared.
By the manner of raising and lowering the sliding boxes g, g, I can readily throw the machine in motion or out as desired, as, the whole is readily arranged. If I desire to lift the gearing out of the driving wheel C, I have only to turn down nut f on screw e, then turn nut CZ, and I will raise said screw e carrying with it cross piece L, and sliding boxes g, g on posts L raising up out of gear pinion D, and pinion E, and to replace them in gear, I have only to reverse the 0peration of the screws, and the whole is put in gear. This plan of operating the gearing so as to throw it, easily in, or out, is of importance in horse powers, as it is often of great importance to do so.
Havingdescribed, the construction, and operation of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The manner of adjusting the gearing by means of the sliding boxes, g, cross pieces L, screw c, and nuts, 6l, and, f, in combination with the gearing as arranged, the whole operating as described, and for the purposes A set forth.
THOMAS J. BOTTOMS.
