Description

C. B. BECKER.
Meat Chopper.
Patented May 8, 1860.
L m|||||||||||| mm WIT/YE ss 6 s UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN B. BECKER, OF WARWICK TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MEAT-CHOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,145, dated May 8, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN B. BECKER, of WVarwick township, Lancaster county, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved combination and useful Improvements on Chopping-Machines for Minoing Meat, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and t0 the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views, showing one side and as seen from front and rear of the machine, with the sey eral parts in place. Fig. 3 is a front elevation; Fig. 4, a profile view of the gearing detached from the machine; Fig. a side view of one of the choppers i, with its upright handle I, hoists ing pulley V, &c. Fig. 6 shows the construction of the rack and pinion for raising the choppers from the block, adjusting the force of stroke also. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 8 shows'the open ring L, with its strap and buckle cleats 1. Figs. A and B illustrate the raising of the choppers.
The revolving block K, with its cogs M, rests on an upright shaft 8, on an adjustable screw point, this screw passes through a bur in the bed piece B, of the frame A, A, differing from those in common use only, by having a ring L, surrounding the block open instead of entire. This opening is drawn together by a strap and buckle Z, to the cleats on the ring, so as to overlap each other, thereby made adjustable to the shrinking of the block or its expansion through heat or becoming loose otherwise, as often happens. The horlzontal shaft IV, has its bearings on the top side pieces D, and is provided with a turning handle 72,, a bevel pinion X, two or more pulleys U, with lifting pegs V, on each of their sides, as also a cog-wheel N, at its opposite end from the handle. The shaft Q, has its bearings on the side pieces C, and supports the fly or balance wheel I on one extremity as also a pinion O, geared into, and receiving motion from the cog wheel N, on the aforesaid shaft IV. There is also an upright shaft m, on a step cl. This step is attached to the inside of the handled side piece of the frame work. The shaft m, supports a beveled cog-wheel -Y, which receives motion from the pinion X, on the aforesaid shaft W, and imparts it to the block K, by means of a pinion a, on its lower end, being gparled into the cogs M (Fig. 4, &c.) of the b oc A series of four or more choppers z', with their upright handles I, are prevented from side motions by the cross piece F, with its sliding plate f, f, as also the perforated top piece Gr, through which the rounded ends pass, as they are raised up by the lifting pegs w, 7 and forced down by the spiral springs J, on each. There are also rear support-s shown by t, and n, (Fig. 5).
In order to raise the choppers from the block, a rod in, (Fig 3) is passed through holes in the ends I, on a level with the perforated top, Gr, illustrated by Fig. B, by turning the handled ratchetpinion, S, it runs the cross piece (in which the pinion has its axis) up, carrying the choppers, (stayed by the rod K,) with it, in the position Fig. A. The lower cross piece F, to which the rack R, is attached being stationary, and the rack supports 9, g, slide up and down on the edges of the rack, carried up and down with the upper cross-piece G, as shown in the several positions by Figs. A and B. The ratchet pinion has also a handled bur T. By tightening the same will retain the cross piece G at any desired intermediate point, giving the spiral springs more or less force, as may be desirable.
I am aware that machines for like purposes are made embracing the prominent features of this machine, and I do not claim the oogged and revolving block K, nor the raising pegs and pulleys as these are common, nor the upright choppers with their spiral springs as such, independently considered.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The specific arrangement of the adjustable ring L, hoisting rack and handled ratchet R, r, S for raising the choppers, binding nut and handle T, in combination with the sliding braces g, g, and attached cross pieces F, G, constructed in manner and for the purpose described.
