Description

(No Model.)
A 1 Nj HOPKINS.
TIE FOR BALES AND PACKAGES. No. 312x537. Patented Peb. 24, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I. NEWTON HOPKINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TIE FOR BALEs AND PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of`Lett'ers Patent No. 312,637, dated February 24, 1885.
Application med January a, 1855. (No model.)
Y To all whom, it may concern:
specification, reference being made to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in
Which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the tie complete, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the tie-iastening plate.
The object of my invention is to provide an I inexpensive and efficient tie for bundles, bales,
and packages of various kinds and sizes. y
My invention consists in a plate, of steel or other suitable material, having on one or both ends thereof series of teeth or hooks which are bent over or returned parallel with the plate and near it, these series of hooks, when two series are used, being arranged either on opposite sides of the plate, as shown in the drawings, or both upon the same side of the plate. My invention further consists in combining with the plate having hooks formed upon one or both ends thereof, a suitable tape or band one end of which is permanently attached to the plate, the other end being capable of engagement with the hooksrformed on the plate. My invention also consists in forming upon or attaching to thehooked plateletters, words,
or characters, which may relate to the contents oi the tie or to the source whence they proceed.
The plate A, of steel or other suitable material, has formed on one or both ends thereof series or" hooks a, which are bent over parallel with the body of' the plate, or nearly so, and are capable of entering into the meshes of the tape or band B. The two series of 40 hooks are formed on opposite sides of the plate, as shown in the drawings, or both series are formed on the same side of the plate, as may be required; or, in cases where it is desirable, the plate A may have hooks only upon one end, -the other end being secured to the end of the tape by means of a rivet, or in any other convenient way.
When it is desirable to use two bands or tapes arranged at right angles to each other, the plate A will be provided with hooks at the sides as well as at the ends.
Any kind of tape or band adapted to receive the hooks a in its meshes may be used in connection with the plate A; but I prefer a coarsely-woven tape made of strong material, or when the tie is intended for use on large bales or bundles, a tape made of wire may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As an improved article of manufacture, a tie fastener consist-ing of a plate having formed on one or both of its ends series of hooks, as herein specified.
2. The combination, with a plate having hooks formed on `one or both of its ends, of a tape or band adapted to receive the hooks in its meshes, as herein specified.
Y I. NEWTON HOPKINS.
