Description

VPatented Peb. 24, 1885.
S. C. COLLINS.
DETAGHABLE BRUSH HANDLE.
N. PETER$ Plma-limumpher. Wumngmn, n.0.
(No M0161.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON CAMERON COLLINS, OF'MARIET'IA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETACHABLE BRUSH-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,611, dated February 24, 1885.
Application filed February 11, 1884. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, SIMON C. CoLLINs, of Marietta, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Brush- Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
I-Ieretofore handles have been principally made as a part of the brush or permanently secured thereto.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-adjustable handle for hand-brushes, and I accomplish these objects by the construction herein shown.
clamps.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side view of the handle and parts attached. Fig. 2 is a View of the set-screw. Fig. 3 is a side and edge View of one of the side Fig. 4 is a side and edge view of the movable .locking-piece. of the same part shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 6 is a perspective of a brush with my device attached.
The construction will be readily understood on reference to the drawings.
a represents the portion of my device which is grasped by the hand when the brush is being used. The rear portion, a, is shaped as shown, being provided with the inclined pcrtion or spur e. The opposite end of the handle portion is shaped as shown, and provided with a set-screw, d, passing through the portion f and into the piece c. The clamping-pieces b are provided at their outer ends with spurs l or inwardly-inclined pieces e', which engage in the side of the brush. rlhe inner ends of these pieces are provided with a diagonal slot, g, within which the pin h on the piece c traverses. The inner end of the set-screw d' may have a bearing in the part fi, if desired.
If it is desired to apply the device to a. brush, it is placed in the position shown, the end a being drawn up snugly against the heel of the brush, and the set-screw d being turned to al- Fig. 5 isa top view low the clamping-piece c to rest near the part i, thus forcing the clamping-pieces b outward sufficiently to permit their outer ends to engage with the edge of the brush, after which the set-screw is turned to draw the piece c toward the nose of the brush, and the pin h, traversing the slots g, will draw the clamping,- pieces b inward, and thus securely lock them in place. These pieces may be set at an angle, as indicated in dotted lines, and when so set the first effect resulting from tightening the setscrew will be to draw them inward, as above described, until a firm grip is obtained, upon the sides of the brush, after which the tendency will be to cause these pieces to approach more nearly to aparallel position, thus carrying the whole handle as far as permitted toward the nose of the brush and forcing the part e to grip more firmly in the heel of the brush. thus firmly and securely locking the whole device in position.
1t will readily be seen that very many modifications may be made in the construction of this device without departing from my invention. I do not, therefore, confine myself to the exact construction shown.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to securev by Letters Patent, is-
1. The handle a, having spur a', and parts z' and f, in combination with the movable clamppieces b b, and means, substantially as described, for securing the attachment in place on the back of a brush, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of handle-piece a, havving spur end a', and parts i andf, with clamping-pieces b, having diagonal slots g, piece c, having pin h, and set-screw d,`all constructed and operating substantially as shown.
his SIMON CAMERON X COLLINS.
mark.
