T he present invention particularly pertains to a rotary or rotatable device for holding a plurality of books in a compact and convenient manner. More specifically the device of the present invention comprises a holder for a plurality of books in a manner whereby the books, such as for example ring binders, may be disposed in a series in closed position for ready access and selection in a manner whereby a desired book may be withdrawn from closed position, then disposed in an open inclined position on the holder for convenient access to the contents of a book, and for use thereof in a manner for example by writing on the leaves or other filing records contained in the book, whereupon in a successive manner the book may be closed and replaced on or within the holder in closed and readily accessible position.

Other objects of the present invention, its details of construction, arrangement of parts and economics thereof will be apparent from a consideration of the following specification and accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective View of the book holder of the present invention showing use thereof with some books in opened supported position thereon and others in closed telescoped position therein, the view being in part an exploded one illustrating a book separated from one of the supporting or holder channels therefor.

FIG. 2 is a plan view of the device of the present invention.

FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of FIG. 2, with one open and one closed book shown in dotted lines on the holder device.

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary detailed view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3.

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary detailed view taken on the line 5--5 of FIG. 3.

FIG. 6 is a fragmentary detailed view taken on the line 66 of FIG. 3.

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 19 indicates a stand carrying the vertical shaft 11. A hub 12 embraces the shaft 11 and is rotatably supported thereabout on

13 and 14. The shaft 11 carries a base plate 15 on which is supported the relatively larger circular base 16.

The base 16 carries a plurality of equi-angularly spaced vertically disposed and radially extending plates 17, the forward edges of these plates 17 being inclined as at 18 to a suitable extent such as in the illustrations shown, to, for example, 40 to the vertical. The rear vertical ends 19 of these plates 17 are suitably secured to the hub 12. At their upper edges 2i) the plates 17 carry a top plate 21 which is concentric with and of a lesser diameter than the base plate 16, all as best shown in detail of FIG. 3.

The base plate 16 carries a plurality of channel members each comprising a web 22 and

parallel flanges

The number of channel members is equal to the plates 17 and are supported thereagainst on the inclined edge 18 so that the channels are disposed on the rotatable base 16 at an angle to the vertical with the lower end of the channel disposed adjacent the periphery of the base 16 and the upper end adjacent the axis of the unit above the plate 21.

The channel members are suitably secured as by welding at 24 to the circular plate 21 and the vertical plate 17, and at its lower end to the transversely extending inclined abutment member 25 which forms a stop at the base of each channel for a book supported therein as will be hereinafter described.

The channel members as thus mounted open upwardly and outwardly. Each of the channel flanges 23 terminates in an outwardly inclined flange extension 26. These flange extensions 26 have further secured to them one or more brackets 27 which are parallel to the flange extensions 26, adjacent bracket means being secured to each other at an angle.

The depth of each of the channel members is preferably not uniform but rather inclined. That is to say, their

23, 23 are inclined at their upper edges to the web 22 so as to form a channel which gradually increases in depth from its lower to its upper end, the upper edges of the channels 23 being in the illustration shown approximately 30 to the vertical.

The width of the channel member, that is the distance between its

23, 23, is substantially equal to the thickness of a closed book generally indicated as 28 shown in the detail of FIG. 4. When not in use the books 28 are telescopically nested within the channel members carried by the rotatable base 16. As shown in FIG. 2 for the purpose of illustration, the arrangement is such that eight channel holders are provided for supporting eight books thereon in an equally spaced man ner. It will be understood that a greater or lesser number can be employed. These books may thus be held in closed nested position for ready access by one or more persons by either manually rotating the base or platform 16 or by effecting such rotation in clockwise or counterclockwise manner by suitable motor drive means, not shown.

When it is desired to have access to one of the books 28 it is suitably manually tilted outwardly, at the top front corner about the lower rear corner as a pivot, from within the recess of the channel member and the

27, 27. In open position the user can have ready access to the filing records 3i) disposed therein or for writing thereon as in a posting operation. Any book may be readily lifted from the holder and moved to another location for reference, posting, etc. without having to free clamps or the like.

Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood by those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the details thereof without departing from its scope as comprehended by the following claims.

I claim: 7

1. A book holder comprising a rotatable circular base, a plurality of forwardly open equally angularly spaced channel members supported thereon at an incline from adjacent the periphery of said base to adjacent the axis 0 of rotation at their upper edges, each adapted to separably receive and endwise retain a closed book therein, the flanges of said channel members including outwardly inclined extensions adapted to support a book in open position on withdrawal from said channel, and abutment means on said base extending transversely of and adjacent to the lower end of each of said channel members. 2. Claims

1. A BOOK HOLDER COMPRISING A ROTATABLE CIRCULAR BASE, A PLURALITY OF FORWARDLY OPEN EQUALLY ANGULARLY SPACED CHANNEL MEMBERS SUPPORTED THEREON AT AN INCLINE FROM ADJACENT THE PERIPHERY OF SAID BASE TO ADJACENT THE AXIS OF ROTATION AT THEIR UPPER EDGES, EACH ADAPTED TO SEPARABLY RECEIVE AND ENDWISE RETAIN A CLOSED BOOK THEREIN, THE FLANGES OF SAID CHANNEL MEMBERS INCLUDING OUTWARDLY INCLINED EXTENSIONS ADAPTED TO SUPPORT A BOOK IN OPEN POSITION ON WITHDRAWAL FROM SAID CHANNEL, AND ABUTMENT MEANS ON SAID BASE EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF AND ADJACENT TO THE LOWER END OF EACH OF SAID CHANNEL MEMBERS.
