(Cl. 57-105) The invention relates to a band or cord drive for the spindles of spinning and twining machines with two rows of spindles on each side of the machine.
In the case of such spinning or twining machines with two rows of spindles on each side, each row of spindles is provided with a driving shaft which is provided with pulleys or drums and extends in the longitudinal direction of the machine. The two driving shafts are mounted in a box in the direct vicinity of the rows of spindles and have a driving pulley with driving tape or band for each spindle.
By using two driving shafts a considerable amount of space is required and a drive is necessary for each shaft. The object of the invention is to overcome this objection and to produce a spindle arrangement which allows compact construction and ensures a reliable drive of the individual spindles.
To attain this object it is proposed according to the invention to coordinate with the two rows of spindles a common driving shaft extending between them and to arrange the spindles of each row with their axes displaced in relation to each other, and to drive them in pairs from a double pulley mounted on the driving shaft through the intermediary of two separate band or cord drives. The two rows of spindles can also be arranged at different heights.
In an advantageous development of the invention, it is advisable to arrange the guide rollers and tension rollers for the two bands or cords of a double pulley in pairs side by side. To save space, two pairs of guide rollers can project into the double pulley. In order to prevent in an effective manner the spindles from being pulled out inadvertently from the spindle housing, the spindles have incisions into which latches mounted on the cover plates can be pushed.
By the arrangement according to the invention, not only space but also bearing and driving means are saved, because, contrary to the known machines, only one driving shaft is required. In addition, each spindle has its own separate drive so that in the event of one spindle failing, the other spindles are not aifec-ted. Another important advantage consists in that by the practical arrangement of the double pulleys and guide and tension rollers, the driving bands or cords can be kept very short and placed on the individual rollers without difficulty. The clear arrangement of the individual spindle drives also presents many advantages so that, in particular, failures can be quickly spotted and easily rectified.
Several embodiments of the invention are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a cross-section through a spindle box;
FIG. 2, a section taken on line IIII of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3, a section taken on line III-III of FIG. 1 and projected on a single plane;
FIG. 4 shows a bearing of the driving shaft, and
FIGS. '5 and 6 are respectively a section and top plan view of the device for locking the spindles.
The drive according to the invention is located between two spindle frames 1 and 2 which are covered at the top by cover plates 3 and 4. The spindle frames 1 and 2 carry the spindles 5 and 6 arranged at different heights and driven by a driving shaft 7 through the intermediary of bands or cords 8 and 9 indicated by dot-dash lines in the drawings. Coordinated to each of the bands or cords are the pulleys ll), 11 respectively, together forming the double pulley 12, guide rollers 13, 15 and '14, 16, 17, 1S and tension rollers 19, 20. The guide rollers 13, 15 and 14, 16 and 17, 18 form pairs and are arranged on a common shaft and mounted on the spindle frame 2. The bands 8 and 9 are guided over the pulleys 10' land 11 and the rollers 13 to 20 so that the spindles 5 and 6 rotate in the same direction. The tension rollers 19' and 20, also mounted on the spindle frame 2, are loaded by springs 21 and 22, the pressure they exer -t on the rollers being adjustable by means of knurled screws 23, 2.4. The pairs of guide rollers 13, 15 and 14, 16 project into the double pulley 12 with the result that considerable space is saved. To enable a band or cord to be exchanged quickly, the side plates 3a and 4a can be easily removed to give ready access to the spindle frames.
According to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the band 8 is on the driving pulley 10, runs therefrom on to the spindle 5 with its slack strand extending over theguide rollers 13, 14 and tension roller 19' from which it returns in the direction of the driving pulley 10. The band 9 is on the driving pulley 11, then runs over the guide roller 17 onto the spindle 6, over the guide roller 18 and is then led over the guide rollers 15 and 16 to the tension roller 20 from which it is again guided in the direction of the driving pulley 11. With the bands running in this manner the spindles 5 and 6 rotate counterwise when the driving shaft 7 turns in this sense.
The bands 8 and 9 must be kept very short in view of the space-saving construction, are preferably either partly or wholly made from Wear-resisting perlon and worked in such a manner that they are very pliable and entrain almost without slip. The band tension, which is also of great importance for constant running speeds, can be adjusted by the tension rollers 19, 20 according to the nature of the band. It can be clearly seen from FIG. 3 that the two spindles 5 and 6 are arranged with their axes displaced in relation to each other resulting in advantageous space-saving guiding of the bands 8 and 9. FIG. 4 shows a bearing of the driving shaft 7 with ball bearing 7a, the bearing block of which is mounted on the spindle frame 2.
In FIGS. 5 and 6, the cover plate 3 (4) with its latch 25, which can be pushed into an incision 26 in the spindle 5 (6), is shown. On the latch 25 a screw 27 is arranged which can be slid in a slot 28 in the cover plate 3 (4) and serves for fixing the latch. Pins 29 and 30 prevent the latch 25 from turning. When the latch is in engagement with the incision 26, the spindle cannot be pulled out in upward direction.
The two spindles 5, 6 might also be arranged at the same height without departing from the scope of the invention.
We claim:
1. In a spinning and twining machine, the combination comprising:
(1) a horizontal drive shaft;
(2) two rows of vertical spindles adjacent to and lying in planes perpendicular to the axis of said drive shaft, parallel to each other and having the spindles in one row in staggered, longitudinal relationship to the spindles in the other row;
(3) a plurality of double drive pulleys mounted on said drive shaft and equal in number to the number of spindles in a row;
(4) a first plurality of idler pulleys equal in number to the total number of spindles and positioned adjacent to and below said double drive pulleys;
(5) a first plurality of adjacent pairs of idler pulleys equal in number to twice the total number of spindles in a row and located within the area defined between the driving portions of said double drive pulleys above said drive shaft;
(6) a second plurality of adjacent pairs of idler pulleys also equal in number to twice the total number of spindles in a row and also located within the area defined between the driving portions of said double drive pulleys below said drive shaft;
(7) a plurality of continuous loop cords, one for each spindle, each cord being entrained about its spindle, one of said drive pulleys, one of said idler pulleys, and one of each adjacent pair of idler pulleys;
(8) an adjustable tensioning means for each of said cords including means for positively adjusting the horizontal position of said first plurality of idler pulleys with respect to said drive pulleys.

Claims (1)

1. IN A SPINNING AND TWINING MACHINE, THE COMBINATION COMPRISING: (1) A HORIZONTAL DRIVE SHAFT; (2) TWO ROWS OF VERTICAL SPINDLES ADJACENT TO AND LYING IN PLANES PERPENDICULAR TO THE AXIS OF SAID DRIVE SHAFT, PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER AND HAVING THE SPINDLES IN ONE ROW IN STAGGERED, LONGITUDINAL RELATIONSHIP TO THE SPINDLES IN THE OTHER ROW; (3) A PLURALITY OF DOUBLE DRIVE PULLEYS MOUNTED ON SAID DRIVE SHAFT AND EQUAL IN NUMBER TO THE NUMBER OF SPINDLES IN A ROW; (4) A FIRST PLURALITY OF IDLER PULLEYS EQUAL IN NUMBER TO THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SPINDLES AND POSITIONED ADJACENT TO AND BELOW SAID DOUBLE DRIVE PULLEYS; (5) A FIRST PLURALITY OF ADJACENT PAIRS OF IDLER PULLEYS EQUAL IN NUMBER TO TWICE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SPINDLES IN A ROW AND LOCATED WITHIN THE AREA DEFINED BETWEEN THE DRIVING PORTIONS OF SAID DOUBLE DRIVE PULLEYS ABOVE SAID DRIVE SHAFT; (6) A SECOND PLURALITY OF ADJACENT PAIRS OF IDLER PULLEYS ALSO EQUAL IN NUMBER TO TWICE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SPINDLES IN A ROW AND ALSO LOCATED WITHIN THE AREA DEFINED BETWEEN THE DRIVING PORTIONS OF SAID DOUBLE DRIVE PULLEYS BELOW SAID DRIVE SHAFT; (7) A PLURALITY OF CONTINUOUS LOOP COORDS, ONE FOR EACH SPINDLE, EACH CORD BEING ENTRAINED ABOUT ITS SPINDLE, ONE OF SAID DRIVE PULLEYS, ONE OF SAID IDLER PULLEYS, AND ONE OF EACH ADJACENT PAIR OF IDLER PULLEYS; (8) AN ADJUSTABLE TENSIONING MEANS FOR EACH OF SAID CORDS INCLUDING MEANS FOR POSITIVELY ADJUSTING THE HORIZONTAL POSITION OF SAID FIRST PLURALITY OF IDLER PULLEYS WITH RESPECT TO SAID DRIVE PULLEYS.
