JACOB WILLIAM BAKER, OF UXBRIDGE, ONTARIO, CAADA.
eAR-Cop'PLlNe.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.3l1,71l, dated February 3,1885.
Application iiled September 29, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JACOB WILLIAM BIKER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Uxbridge, in the county of Ontario and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Coupling and Uneoupling Railway-Cars, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperconsists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed ont in the claim.
The main object of this invention is to provide a cheap and simple means for automatically coupling or connecting cars, the same being effected by the force imparted to the cars from the engine after the link or connectingbar has been properly guided to the drawhead the uncoupling being also effected without necessitating the presence of the operator between the cars, the objectionable use of the pin and link being dispensed with.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a indicates a draw-head, and is preferably of that form having a bell-mouth. This drawhead may be secured to the car-frame in any well-known manner, and provided at its rear with a volute or other suitable spring, as shown at A. The draw-head is provided in its side walls with opposite transverse slots or apertures, B, for the entrance of springactuated slide clutches C. These slideelutches are of a construction substantially as shown, having the recessed portion b for the frictional engagement of the forward ends of the flat spring D, the opposite ends of which are secured to the outer side walls of the draw-head, and are designed to keep the said clutches or bolts pressed in and iu engagement with the head of the coupling-bar, as will be presently explained. rIhe said clutches are also provided at their outer ends with an eye, as at c, for the attachment of a chain or other suitable device, which is connected at its opposite end to an operating-lever suitably connected to the frame of the car.
I do not wish to confine myself to any particular form oi' lever or system of levers for operating the slides, as a single lever, such as E, may be provided at their lower ends with a hook to engage the respective outer ends of the chains F. These levers being pivoted to the platform of a car, their upper ends are carried within convenient reach of the operator, who stands on the car. The slide-clutches may, if found desirable, be beveled at their engaging ends, as shown at d, but are preferably circularly recessed, so as to permit the clutches to be easily forced apart when engaged by the beveled or pointed end of the connecting-bar.
Another form of levers for operating the slide-clutches is shown in Fig. 7. This form is preferable on freight-cars, having one of the vertical levers E provided about midway its length above its pivotal point on the ear-frame with a rule-joint, as shown at G, the upper section of which is guided in its movements by aloop-guide, as H, and is pivotally connected at its upper end to a horizontal transverse bar, I, which is also pivoted to the upper end of the vertical lever connecting with the opposite slide-clutch, and this horizontal bar I is connected to a handlever, J which is pivoted at its lower end to the ear frame or platform. Thus it Will be perceived that by a single thrust of the arm against the hand-lever J through the medium ol' the levers and transverse connecting-bar the clutches may be separated for the withdrawal of the connecting-bar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa
' in which the lateral Walls ofthe draw-head are lower ends to the'slide-clutches, substantially 1o as specified.
transversely slotted and provided with sprin'g- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in actuated slide clutches or bolts, the combinztpresence of two witnesses.
tion therewith of the pivoted vertical levers E, one of which is\provided with a rulcjoint, JACOB WILLIAM BAKER' as shown7 the bar I, connecting the said levers Witnesses:
at their upper ends, the handlever J, and C. H. WEDDEFIELD,
chains connecting the said levers E at their I H. HAMILTON COKE.
