It is an object of the present invention to provide a cigarette holder which can gradually reduce the relative amount of smoke introduced into the lungs of the smoker by increasing the air the smoker sucks in, thus enabling the smoker to more easily reduce or abstain from smoking entirely.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette holder having a stem body and a sleeve for holding a cigarette, which sleeve can be rotated with respect to the stem body so that openings in the sleeve and in the stem body may be aligned with the aid of a detent so that air may be admitted to and admixed with smoke in the holder, the openings in the body being progressively sized so that a smoker may periodically control dilution of smoke with a view toward curbing the smoking habit.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette holder which will have alignment marks on the outer periphery of both the stem and the sleeve.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette holder comprising the present invention; and

FIGURE 2 is a horizontal elevational view of the holder shown partly broken away.

Referring to the drawing, a cigarette holder made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a hollow stem 12 made of plastic or other suitable material having a mouthpiece 14. A smaller diameter extension 16 is provided on stem 12 opposite of mouthpiece 14 for reasons which hereinafter will become apparent. Extension 16 is integral with stem 12 and is provided with a plurality of angularly spaced apart radially extending openings 18 of consistently diminishing diameter and a plurality of angularly spaced apart semi-circular de pressions or sockets 2t). Openings 18 are axially spaced from and aligned with sockets 20. A hollow sleeve 22 is freely and rotatably received on extension 16 of stem 12 and is adapted to retain cigarette 24. Sleeve 22 is provided with a radially extending opening of circular configuration 26 which may be aligned with any one of the openings 18 of extension 16. A detent ball 28, which is fixedly secured to a coil spring 30 within a circular opening 32 through sleeve 22, is yieldably urged into one of the depressions 20 thus maintaining sleeve 22 in any desired position with respect to an opening 18 through extension 16. A plurality of marks 34 on the outer periphery of stem 12 and a single mark 36, which is disposed on the outer periphery of sleeve 22 in axial alignment with opening 26, provide alignment means, whereby a particular opening 18 in extension 16 may be located in relation to open ing 26 in sleeve 22,

3,116,741 Patented Jan. 7, 1954 In operation, an individual holds the stem in one hand and rotates the sleeve 22 with respect to extension 16 to bring a progressively larger opening 18 into alignment with opening 26 in sleeve 22. The desired alignment of opening 26 with one of the openings 18 is maintained by the engagement of yieldable detent 28 with one of the sockets 20. A visual indication of alignment is simultaneously provided by the alignment of mark 36 with one of the marks 34.

It shall be noted that when ball 28 falls into a depression 20 on extension 16 of stem 12, an opening 18 simultaneously aligns with opening 26 through sleeve 22 and thus air is allowed entrance into cigarette holder 10 thus decreasing the intake of smoke from the cigarette 24. When the stem is rotated with respect to the sleeve 22, to align a larger diameter opening 18 of extension 16 with opening 26 of sleeve 22, a greater amount of air is taken in by the smoker in proportion to a lower amount of smoke taken in by the smoker.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece member having an axially extending passageway therethrough, said mouthpiece being provided at one end with a hollow tubular extension having an external diameter that is less than that of said mouthpiece at said one end, said extension having a plurality of angularly spaced sockets on the exterior surface thereof and a plurality of angularly spacedradially extending openings therethrough in communication with said passageway, each of said openings being axially spaced from and aligned with one of said sockets, successive openings being of progressively larger diameter, a cigarette holder member in the form of a hollow cylindrical sleeve, said sleeve being adapted to be rotatably received on said tubular extension, said sleeve having on its interior surface a yieldable detent, said detent being adapted to be removably received successively within said sockets, and said sleeve being provided with a radially extending opening therethrough adapted to be aligned with one of said openings in said extension as determined by which of said sockets is in engagement with said detent, whereby the quantity of air admitted to said passageway may be regulated.
