A. L. BURLINGAME.
NAPKIN PIN 0B, HOLDER. No. 311,640.
Patented' Feb. s, 1885.
Illlllllmmmm l" www I NITED STATES AMY L. BURLINGAME, OF WILLETT, NEW YORK.
NAPKIN PIN OR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,640, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed July 2l, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMY L. BURLINGAME,v of Villett, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Napkin Pin or Holder, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
Ihe object of my invention is to furnish an improved pin or holder to be used as a ready and convenient appliance for the purpose oi' attaching a so-called table-napkin77 to the clothing of a person and securing such napkin in position to protect the exposed portion ot' the clothing from being soiled when partaking of food; and to this end my invention consists of a pin or holder constructed in a new and novel form from a single piece of spring-wire, capable of being easilyoperated and applied with facility, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of my invention as it appears ready for inserting in the napkin. Fig. 2 illustrates its application.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
rIo enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe the construction and opera` tion thereof.
I take spring-wire of a proper size and coilit one or more times around a mandrel to form the ooilspring S, having arm A of sufticient length, and terminating in a sharp-pointed hook, as shown ath, Fig. l. Arm B, having an angle formed as shown at b, Fig. l, terminates in a small hook or clasp, (shown at 0,) which partially encircles arrn A at point d, the parts being retained in engagement bythe action of spring S.
Operation: The pin being unclasped, insert the sharp point ot` arm A and pass it through the fabric of the napkin at two points in close proximity and near the upper edge of the napkin, when the pin is clasped, and the napkin will be retained on arm A, as shown in Fig. 2, where it will remain until removed by reversing the operation of attaching. By inserting the point of hook h in the fabric of the clothing covering the upper front portion of the person of the user at a suitable point, the napkin will be suspended and kept securely in position until removed.
Having thus described my invention and its operation, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The coiled wire spring in one piece, in form as shown at S A B b, hook or clasp C, and sharp-pointed hook h, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at lVill'ett, in the county ot' Cortland, in the State of New York,
this 14th day of May, 188i.
