HENRY THOMAS BLACKWELL, OF WHAT CHEER, IOWA.
CONDENSER FOR STEAM-PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,638, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed September 6, 1884.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY T. BLAOKWELL, of What Cheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvemeutin Condensers t'orSteamPumps, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
My condenser is specially intended for use at mines where the pumps are placed at deep levels, and it dispenses with the long line of exhaust-pipe generally required, and which hinders the operation of the pump.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of the condenser, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line x 00 of Fig. 1.
A is the cylindrical body or case. formed with a neck, a, for connection to the inlet suction-pipe, and with a neck, I), for connection to the pipe leading to the pump. At the middle of the case is a chamber, 0, formed by an annular partition, d, connected attop and bottom of the case, so that there is no communication between the chamber and the outer space except by the pipe" 6, which extends from the end of thechamber 0 into the neck I).
f f are radial partitions, between partitions d and sides of case A, extending about two thirds the distance to the top, so as to compel the water to pass over the entire surface of the partition d.
g is the exhaust-steam pipe, connecting to chamber 0 at the top of the case.
his a spray-water pipe, from the delivery side of the pump, entering the steam-pipe g.
t is an air-outlet pipe, for relief of pressure,
(N0 model.)
fitted with a check-valve, k, to prevent inlet of air.
Z is a checlcvalve in pipe 6, to prevent water coming back when the vacuum in chamber 0 exceeds that in the suction-pipe; and m is a globe-valve that is to be closed when the pump is started.
In operation the exhauststeam passing through pipe 9 is partially condensed by the spray from pipe h, and then passes into and through the clni'tnber c, where it is further condensed, and escapes by pipe 6 to the neck and thence to the pump with the main body of water. The steam used for operating the pump is thus got rid of Without using a long line of exhaust-pipe, and the vacuum obtained in the steam-cylinder aids the operation of the pump. Further, by carrying the water of condensation through the pump the lubricant supplied to the steam-cylinder is conveyed to the water-cylinder ot' the pump and lubricates the working parts.
Having thus described my inveution.I claim as new and desire to secure bv Letters Patent 1. The condenser consisting of case A, partition d, forming chamber 0, stean1-pipeg.wa- '[QFCOllllQCtlOHS a b, and pipe 6, connecting chamber 0 to the outlet b, substantially as described.
2. In a condenser, the combination ot'the case having the inner chamber, a, and the ra' dial partitionsf, with the steam-pipe g,waterconnections a b. and pipe e,counecting chamber c to the outlet 12, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
- HENRY TllOillAS BLACKWELL.
