Description

- UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI REESE, OF MAHANOY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM PUMPS AND CONDENSERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,796, dated April 16, 1873; application filed February 5, 1873.
' companying drawing and to theletters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the steam-pump and condenserfor which Letters Patent were granted to me in 1872 and it consists in condensing the exhaust steam from the cylinder ofsteam-pumps with water partly from the column of discharge-pipes and partly with water from the suction-pipes, giving the pump the benefit of the water so lifted by the vacuum formed in the condenser, and assisting the pressure in the steam-cylinder by having a vacuum on the opposite side of the piston, and, also, by this means of using up all exhaust steam, does away with injury to timbers, &c., in the mines.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of my condenser.
A represents the cylinder, which constitutes the condenser, and into which the exhaust steam passes from the steam-cylinder through the pipe B on top. 0 is a small cock with perforated pipe, which is attached to the column of discharge-pipes and enters the cylinder on the side near the top. D is the succheck, and cook, are for the purpose of blow-- ing through so as to form a vacuum in the first place, and a vacuumgage is put in the elbow to ascertain the amount of vacuum.
The operation is as follows: The steam is exhausted into the condenser through the top pipe B; then the water from the side cook 0,
being discharged in, starts to form a vacuum by the condensation of the steam, and the suction-water commences to flow in and completes the vacuum and fills the condenser with water.
The steam-pump, being in motion, draws the water so filled in the condenser into the working-barrel, and on the return stroke discharges it into column pipes, and so continues.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The condenser A," exhaust-steam inlet 13, spray-discharge pipe 0, blow-pipe G, suctionpipe D, and pump connecting-pipes E E,all constructed and arranged for operation as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence: of two witnesses.
ELI REESE.
