SEIGFRIED L. I'IOGKERT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR ACTUATING MORTAR-PESTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,580, dated February 3, 1885.
Application ill (1 March 17, 188-1; (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SEIGFRIED L. HooKER'r, a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Actuating Mortar-Pestles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for actuating the pestle of a mortar.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which will securely hold the mortarin position, in combination with attachments to the pestle which hold it firmly in position, and yet allow it to be rotated easily under the springpressure, for the purpose of more rapidly and uniformly triturating or pulverizing the material under the pestle, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the ac companying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of my improvement in position for use. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view of the bed-plate on which the mortar is set. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the feet of the standards.
A represents the mortar-table. It is provided with adjustable lugs a, which are secured in slots b, pierced in the table, as shown radially, so that the mortar may beheld firmly in position by the lugs, which may be adjusted to suit different sizes of mortars.
B B represent serrated or notched standards, which are preferably secured to the table by slotted feet 0 and setscrews D, which pass through slots (1, pierced in the feet of the standards B, for the purpose of adjusting the standards, if desired.
0 represents 'notches formed on the sides of the standards to receive the pressurespring 1*]. Several notches e are provided on the edge of the standards B, so as to allow the spring E, which is held in position in the notches to be adjusted up or down to increase or decrease the pressure upon the top of the an endless elastic band. It may be attached to the top of the pestle H in any desired manner. The tension of the spring E holds the pestle down, and yet its elasticity allows it to be rotated readily. Additional pressure may be imparted to the top of the pestle by lowering the ends of the spring-band E. WVhen thus arranged, the pestle can be rapidly and easily rotated under pressure of the spring, and the triturations accomplished in very much less time and with much less fatigue than with the ordinary pestle.
I do not desire to limit myself to the form or shape of the standards B B and notches c e, as they may be variously modified without ati'ecting the principal feature of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In combination with a mortar and pestle, standards B B and elastic pressure-band E,secured to the standards B and pestle H, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a mortar and pestle, the standards B B, adjustably secured to the table A and adapted to receive the elastic pressure-band 1 substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination withthc mortar and pestle, the table A, provided with means substantially as shown and described, for holding the mortar, and having adj ustably secured thereto standards B B, said standards being provided with notches c e, and the elastic pressureband E, attached to the pestle and adj ustably secured to the standards, substan tially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand.
SEIGFRIED L. H'OOKERT.
