COMBINED GAS AND ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.
SPECIEFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,131, dated January 20, 1885.

The invention is carried out by making the 0 arm or arms for one lighting medium stationary, and arranging the arm or arms for the other medium, or a tip or tips thereon, for movement in a horizontal plane. The el ectricv lamp arms are preferably stationary, while the 3 5 gas-arms have swivcled tipscarrying burners, or the gas-arms themselves have a swiveled support and move in a horizontal plane.
With reference more particularly to Figs. 1,

This makes it-impos'sible to throw the flame against the globe. When electric light is to be used, the gas-burner is swung aside and an electric lamp is placed in the socket B. Before using the gas it is necessary to remove the electric-lamp-from the socket, and to swing the gas-burner to the center of the globe.- These same features may be applied to chandeliers, as shown in Fig. 4.
The preferred method of arranging the gas and electric-light arms in a bracket or chandelier is shown in Fig. 7, the electric-light arm being the ornamental sleeve surrounding the gas-arm, and the wires being run through the space between this sleeve and the gas-pipe. A head, B, is employed to support the electriclamp socket and theextension of the gas-pipe, as shown. 7 5
In Fig. 5 the gas-arms are mounted upon a swiveled support and swung in a horizontal plane. The chandelier isswiveled at the joint I, any suitable form of gasswivel being used. WVhen the electric lamps are to be used,the gas-arms are swung so as to bring thelamps into the globes. Before swinging the armsthelamps 0 or globes are removed, and are replaced after the proper position of the parts is obtained.
When it is desired to use the gas,the gas-arms are swung to a position between the electriclamp arms, the electric lamps or the globes be ing first removed from position.
It is evident that in either form of the inven-' tion the arrangement may be reversed and the I electric-light portion of the structure made the swinging part, the conductors being connected at the swivel-joint in any of the ways used in jointed brackets for electric lamps.
The invention, in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4:, and 7, can also be applied to swinging or jointed combination-brackets of any suitable constructionsuch, for instance, as that shown in Patent No. 298, 553.
What I claim is 1. In combined gas and electric-lightfixtures, the combination, with a globe, of a gas-burner and an electric-lamp socket, both permanently attached to the fixture, one of said parts being located in the center of said globe, while the other is adjustable toward and away from the center of the globe, substantially as set forth.
2. In combined gas and electric-light fixtures, the combination of a gas-arm and an electriclamp arm with a globe common to the gasburner and the electric lamp, and means for swinging in a horizontal plane the part or parts conducting one lighting medium, substantially as set forth.
3. In combined gas and electric-light fixtures.
the combination, with a stationary electriclamp arm, of a gas-arm, a swivel-joint permitting the movement of the gas-arm or a part thereof toward and away from the electric lamp, and a globe common both to the gasburner and the electric lamp, substantially as set forth. 7
4. In a combined gas and electric-light fixture, the combination, with a globe, of an elec tric lamp stationary in said globe, and a swiveled gas-tip capable of being swung into and out of position for lighting in said globe, substantially as set forth.
5. In a combined gas and electric-light fixture, thecombination, with a globe, of an electric lamp stationary in said globe, and a sWiV- eled gas-tip capable of being swung into and out of position for lighting in said globe, said swiveled gastip forming a gas-cock, substantially as set forth.
6. In combined gas and electric-light fixtures, the combination of gas and electric-light arms, located one within the other, with a globe common both to the gas-burner and the electric lamp, and :1. swinging tip for one of the arms, substantially as set forth.
