BURGLAR-ALARM.

SPECIFICATION rorming part of Letters Patent No. 311,027, dated January 20, 1885.

Beitknown that LWARNEE F. H. OKEEFE, a citizen of Allegheny City, residing at Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State ofPennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

lVIy invention relates to burglar alarms adapted to be operated by being trod upon.

The invention consists in the combination, with spring-metal electrodes, of a yielding or elastic connection, as fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a plan view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.

A represents a base or block upon which are secured oppositely-arranged spring-arms B B, formed preferably L-shaped, and adapted to serve as electrodes. The outer ends of these arms B B are each provided with a bindingpost, C, to receive the wires D D, which latter are connected with a battery and lead to an alarm of any preferred character. The inner ends of the arms B B are bent in opposite directions to embrace a short rubber tube or ring, E. I prefer to employ an ordinary rubber tube or ring; but the ring E may be made (No model.)

of any suitable yielding non-conducting material.

It will be apparent that the spring action of the arms B B will serve to hold them normally apart, thus breaking the circuit of the electrical current from the battery. The pressing together of thc arms B B until a contact is ei'- fected will, however, complete the circuit and operate the alarm.

The device as thus described is adapted to be concealed beneath a carpet or matting, and to be trod upon, and will be of service as a signal device, as well as an alarm.

I am aware that it is not broadly new to conceal a circuit-closer beneath a mat, so that the circuit will be closed when the mat is trod upon; hence I make no broad claim to such a combination.

Having fully described my in vention,wh at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a burglar-alarm, the combination, with the wires of a battery, of a base or block, spring-arms secured at their outer ends to said base and provided with binding-posts, while their inner ends are oppositely bent to embrace a yielding connecting-ring, substantially as set forth.
