Application filed May 13, 1913.
slightly ribbed to fit in said depression. When so located the ends of the clip will rest adjacent but not in contact with the bars 10. An electric wire 21 extends from the segment 17 to a suitable plug 22, which engages the socket 213 formed in the top of the casing 21 and from said socket runs a wire 24L to one side of the bell and a wire 25 runs from the other side of the bell to a binding post of the battery. From the other binding post of the battery a wire 26 runs to one of the thumb screws 9 through which connection is made with the bars 10 and handle 1 1. A shunt circuit comprising the wires 97 and 28 runs to and from the electric light 8.
Upon any turning movement of the shank 19 one end portion of the clip 18 will be brought into engagement with one of the bars 10 depending of course upon the direction of the turning movement and the circuit will be completed through the wire 26, the bar 10, the clip 18, segment 17 and wire 21, plug 22, wire 2 1, bell 7 and wire 25. The light circuit will also be completed so that in addition to the ringing of the bell a light will be exhibited. hen the device is not in use the handle 1-1 and the spring clip 18 can be placed within the upper portion of the casing 1 where they may be hung upon suitable supports such as are i dicated at 29. .iy loosening the thumb screws 9 the bars 10 may be slipped downwardly until the notches 13 engage suitable pins 30 carried by the lower portion of the casing, and the thumb screws then tightened, thereby firmly locking the bars 10 upon the sides of the cusing so that the device may be readily slipped into a coat pocket.
hat I claim is 1. A casing containing a battery and bell, a metallic handle carried by the casing-and forming a part of the battery and bell circuit, a body of insulating material carried by the handle, a contact plate carried by the insulating body, a clip adapted to engage the shank of a door knob and to turn therewith and to be engaged by said contact plate, said contact plate being also in the battery and bell circuit.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a casing a battery arranged in said casing, an alarm device carried by said casing, a sectional metallic handle adapted to suphanging position, an inport the casing in a sulating member carried by the intermedi- To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LnoN Minssn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms for Door- Knobs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pocket burglar alarm, especially adapted for use by travelers, and which can be hung upon the shank of a door knob and will give a warning sig nal upon the turning of said knob.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, he casing being shown and parts, including the door knob shank, being in section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, the casing being closed.
In these drawings,
1 represents a casing having a hinged side or door 2 upon the inner face of which may be supported a mirror 3, a tooth brush a and comb 5. \Vithin the casing itself is arranged a suitable battery box 6 and an electric bell 7 while an electric light 8 is mounted upon the top of the easing. Suitable thumb screws 9 are carried by opposite sides of the casing and working vertically upon the shanks of said screws are slotted bars 10, longitudinally slotted as shown at 11 and transversely slotted as indicated at 12, and notched upon their lower ends as shown at 13. Detachably connected to said bars is a curved handle portion 1 1 the ends of which are split and portions turned outwardly to form hooks 15, said hooks engaging the slots 12. The bars 10 and the handle portion 11 are of metal and secured to the central portion of said handle 14 is an insulating plate 16 of rubber or other suitable material, upon the lower face of which is embedded or otherwise fastened a metal segment 17, which if desired may be of copper. A spring clip 18 is adapted to fit upon and grip the shank 19 of the door knob and the casing 1 is adapted to be hung upon said clip by means of the handle portion 1 1 as clearly indicated in Fi 1.
In order to aid in centering the device and also to prevent accidental slipping of tie handle 14 upon the clip the bow portion of the clip is slightly recessed or pressed inwardly as shown at 20 and the segment 17 is tween said contact "plate 7 battery and connecting said battery With said handle, the alarm device being also included in the electriccii cuit.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a suitable electric circuit including an alarm device a spring clip adapted to fit upon and turn With a door knob, a contact plate adapted to rest upon said clip, parallel bars also included in the circuit and adapted to be respectively enby said clip upon turning movement of the knob, and a curved member connecting said bars, of an insulating member beand said curved member.
4. A device of the kind describe-d comprising a casing, a battery arranged therein-and an alarm device carried thereby, a handle for said casing having a boW portion, the bow portion of Which is adapted to be supported from the shank of the door knob, a spring clip carried by said door knob and one of its free ends brought shank, an insulating member interposed betWeen said handle and said clip, and an electric circuit including the aforementioned devices, said circuit being normally broken.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a casing, a sectional handle comprismg vertically movablelongitudinally slotted the purpose set forth. I
