LAMP SHADE STRUCTURE Filed June 22. 1961 l N V EN TOR H 4 NS PAUL SGHELLFNBERG A TT'ORNEY United States Patent 3,109,252. LAMP SHADE STRUCTURE Hanspaul Schellenberg, Pfafiiiron, Zurich, Switzerland, as-
signor to Schweizer. Miich-Gesellschait A.-G., Hashdorf, Lucerne, Switzerland Filed June 22, 1961, Ser. No. 118,996 Claims priority, application Switzerland June 24, 196i 1 Claim. (Cl. 40-131) This invention relates to a package comprising a container adapted to receive an article or articles, more particularly a box or can.
The primary object of the invention is to form the container as a lamp shade, so that after removal of the article from the container, this latter can be combined with a light source and used as a shade.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container for articles such as boxes or cans, the container being of cylindrical shape and made of still paper or cardboard provided with picture gates, so that when used together with a light source, the container may form a so-called Christmas or Advent calendar, or a calendar for any other season, the light permeability of the open picture gates being greater than that of the remaining container wall, so that the opened picture gates will appear as bright areas on the container wall surface.
The invention will be more fully understood and further objects thereof will become apparent from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a finished package according to the invention, consisting of a container formed by a cylindrical hollow body accommodating a box inserted therein.
FIGURE 2 shows the container after removal of the box and conversion of the hollow body into a lantern for candle illumination.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary transverse section through the container drawn to a larger scale. v
FIGURE 5 is a view in elevation of a fragmentary portion of the container surface.
FIGURES 6 and 7 show modified containers of hexagonal or octagonal cross sections.
Referring more particularly to FIGURES 1 to 5 of the drawing, the container 1, formed as an Advent calendar, comprises a cylindrical hollow body 2 made for example of two layers of cardboard or stilt paper, 2a and 2b. One end of the cylindrical hollow body is closed by a bottom 3. The Advent calendar is provided in a manner known per se with little windows or gates 4 which are partly punched out of the Wall of the outer paper layer 2a, in such manner that the gate portion can easily be severed from the layer 2a over the greater portion of the contour of the gate, but remains attached over a minor portion of the contour. The gate 4 can thus be opened in the manner of a door or window wing. The little gates 4, numbered according to the particular days of the Advent season, reveal in each a picture 10 after they have been severed from the wall of the hollow body 2 BAWZSZ Patented Nov. 5, 1953 and swung into open position. At least the area of the picture consists of a translucent material so that the pictures may be illuminated from the interior of the container. The wall of the hollow body 2, naturally may also consist of a light transmitting material; in this case the light permeability prevailingin the zone of the picture surfaces is greater than that of the remaining wall portion. It will be understood that with the described construction the Advent calendar will be suitable as a lantern, when a light source, for example a candle or an electric bulb, is accommodated in the interior of the hollow body, as illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 3. For this purpose, the bottom section 3 may be formed in any suitable manner.
The two paper layers 2a and 2b, for instance may consist of a single band of paper wrapped twice about a tin box 5 which constitutes the packed article for sale. The outer layer 2a is provided with a plurality of gates 4, each marked with a number 1 to 24 to indicate the days of the Advent season. The inner layer 212 is provided with the same number of pictorial representations 19, each of them being situated behind one gate.
A candle 6 is attached to the cover of the box 5 by means of adhesive tape '7.
A customer who buys the package as represented in FIGURE 1 will at home remove the box 5 from the container 2 and detach the candle 6 from the cover of the box. The candle can then be fixed to the bottom of the empty container 2 which, when the candle is lighted, forms a light shade or lantern and can be used as a calendar for a certain limited season such as the Christmas season or Advent.
For bigger size containers, as indicated in FIGURE 3, the bottom 3 of the container can be arranged with an opening 15 forreceiving the socket 9 of an electric bulb 8.
FIGURES 6 and 7 show modified packages which, however, difier from that of FIGURES 1 and 2 solely with respect to the cross-sectional shape of the container. The hollow body 2' is formed as a hexagonal prism open at one end and the hollow body 2" is formed as an octagonal prism also open at one end. Both structures are also suitable as packing means, especially for a box 5. 7
It will be obvious that the surface of the outer layer 2a of the container can be decorated or painted so as to be of attractive appearance when the package is displayed in a store.
It will be understood that the above described examples are preferred embodiments only of the invention and many modifications will be possible within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A lamp shade structure, consisting essentially of a hollow right cylindrical body having an upperand a lower end, said body being open at the upper end and having a base across the lower end, said base having an aperture therein adapted to hold a light fixture, the cylindrical wall of said hollow body being a single continuous sheet of stiff material extending twice around the cylindrical body with substantially one half of the length of the sheet being an outer layer overlying the remainder of the sheet which is an inner layer, the outer layer having 3 cuts therein extending oniy part way around surface portions to form a plurality of gates adapted to be swung to an open position for disclosing the inner of said two layers, the inner of said two layers being translucent at least in the areas coinciding with said gates and having pictorial representations situated to register with said gates on said outer wall, whereby said hollow body can be formed by Wrapping the single sheet twice around a container to serve as a holder for the container of material and when the container is removed can have a light fixture placed in the base thereof and serve as a lamp.
