Description

' until a lather is formed.
ilnrrnn Sra'rns ATENI Orrrcni JAMES J. HYMER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER FOR CLEANING CARPETS, 00.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,829, dated January 13, 1885.
Application filed November 17, 1884. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. HYMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful composition of matter to be used for cleaning carpets, plushes of all descriptions, silks, satins,
silk-velvets, woolen goods of all description,
and for laundry purposes for white cotton and linen goods, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: pure soft water, ten gallons; borax, one pound; vegetable-oil soap, two and onehalf pounds; liquid ammonia, one-third ofapound. The vegetable-oil soap must be cut in small pieces. Mix the water, borax, and soap to gether while cold. Then heat the mixture till it comes to a boil. As, soon as it comes to a boil take' it off the fire and add the liquid ammonia. Let it stand till cool, when it will assume a solid form. Agitate it or stir it up with the fingers or a large fork, when it will become ropy and be ready for use.
In using the above composition for carpets, shake, beat, or brush the dust from the carpet, lay it on a flat surface, or fasten it on the floor in its place, pour the composition on the carpet, and rub it briskly with a stiff brush Then scrape it off with a smooth round-edged steel scraper. After scraping, wipe well with a damp sponge.
The same process is used to clean plush, (without disturbing the upholstering,) with the eX- ception of using a soft brush instead of a stiff one.
For cleaning silks and satins, apply the composition with a sponge, rub it briskly, then rinse or wipe it with a damp sponge. For cleaning woolen goods of all descriptions, either the sponge or brush may be used for applying the composition. Then wipe it off with a damp sponge. For laundry purposes for white cotton and linen goods, one pint of the composition is used with five (5) gallons of water to boil in.
By the use of the above ,coniposition all grease and dirt is removed, leaving the fabric clean with the colors restored to their original brilliancy.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The herein-described composition of matter, to be used for cleaning carpets, plushes of all descriptions, silks, satins, silk-velvets, woolen goods of all descriptions, and for laundry purposes for white cotton and linen goods, consisting of soft water, boraX, vegetable-oil soap, and liquid ammonia, in the proportions specified.
