Description

Oct .15, 1963.- A. H. SCHRETER BOW TIE CONSTRUCTION Filed Nov. 1, 196
INVENTOR. ARNOLD H- S Cl-l RETER BY M FM j Var/M I fim! ATTO R N EYS United States Patent Office 3,l6,72'0 Patented Get. 15, 1963 3,106,720 BGW TE CONSTRUCTION Arnold H. Schreter, 3310 Labyrinth Road, Baltimore, Md. Filed Nov. 1, 1960, Ser. No. 66,533 4 Claims. (Cl. 2151) This invention relates to a bow tie construction and more particularly is related to an improved bow tie construction for preventing relative movement between the elements of a bow tie.
The conventional bow tie includes a bow portion, a clip means having wings engaging the bow portions and wings adapted to engage the collar of a wearers shirt. A cross piece, generally made of the same material as the bow portions, is wrapped transversely around the bow portions and the clip means to give the appearance of a bow tie knot. In order to maintain these tie elements in their assembled position, it has been the practice to place the bow portions and the clip means adjacent one another. Thereafter, thin cotton, nylon or silk thread means were wrapped around the clip means and the bow portions. Subsequently, the cross piece was wrapped around the threads and its ends joined by another thread or by a stapling operation to form a bow tie construction giving the appearance of a bow tie knot. A bow tie constructed in this fashion had an attractive appearance but had several drawbacks.
A tie constructed in the manner described above had several manufacturing disadvantages. The threading operation or stapling operation was generally done by hand and at the end of the wrapping operation it was necessary to stitch or staple through the entire thickness of the bow portion to hold the pleats in the bow and to secure the bow to the metal grip. This was a time consuming, diflioult and expensive procedure.
In addition to these manufacturing disadvantages, it was found that a bow tie constructed in the manner described was subjected to wear and tear and, consequently, a short life of attractive appearance. In this respect it was found that after a period of use the bow portion, the clip means and the cross piece tended to move relative to one another. Such movement or slippage resulted in a bow tie construction which did not maintain its original sewn position. Thus, the bow portion moved with respect to the clip into different and awkward positions and did not always remain square with respect to the wearers neck or shirt. In addition, the cross piece was found to move so that the stitches or staple joining the ends of the cross piece moved to a position where they could be observed rather than remaining in an unobservable position behind the clip means.
All of the above described movements resulted in a tie which became unattractive after a period of use and thus reduced their value and salability in a highly competitive market. The reasons for the tie movement was found to be the failure of the thread attaching means to effectively and properly engage the bow portions and the clip means to prevent such movement. It will be appreciated that the rear surface of the clip means is relatively smooth, thus making it extremely difiicult for the thread to be wrapped in its position in a tight enough fashion which would prevent slippage. Also, the cross piece was prevented from movement only by the threads or staple which engaged the end portions of the cross piece. This would obviously require a very diificult threading or stapling operation and one which was not readily accomplished in practice.
In view of the foregoing, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved bow tie construction which is inexpensive, simple to manufacture and having a long lasting life.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bow tie construction having adhesive means therein for maintaining the bow tie in its original shape even after substantial periods of use.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bow tie construction including a bow portion, a clip means and a cross piece where these elements are effectively prevented from relative movement.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bow tie construction including bow portions, 'a clip means and a cross piece having adhesive means cooperating with the bow portion, the clip means and the cross piece for preventing movement between the bow tie elements.
A still further object of the instant invention is to provide a bow tie construction including bow portions, clip means and a cross piece wherein a single adhesive strip engages the bow portions and the clip means.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a bow tie structure including bow portions, clip means and a cross piece wherein the cross piece has an adhesive coating on its inner surface.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bow tie construction having bow portions, a clip means and a cross piece wherein separate adhesive strips are transversely engaged with the bow portions and the clip means and the cross piece is engaged with the adhesively covered strips to form an attractive and long lasting tie.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a bow tie construction having bow portions, a clip means and a cross piece wherein an adhesive ,strip is transversely engaged with the clip means.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a bow tie construction including bow portions, a clip means and a cross piece wherein the clip means has an adhesive coating thereon.
Additional objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the description which follows, and in part will be obvious from the description, or may be learned by practice of the invention, the objects and advantages being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Briefly described the present invention comprises adhesive means which may be in strip form for transversely engaging the bow portions, the clip means and for longitudinally engaging the cross piece of a bow tie thereby effectively preventing relative movement between these elements and providing an'attractive long lasting tie.
In accordance with this invention, several preferred embodiments are incorporated herein for the purpose of fully appraising the art of some of the alternative constructions which utilize the basic principles of the instant invention. Such embodiments are not intended and should not be construed to limit the scope of the instant invention.
The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification, illustrate several embodiments of the invention and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a top view of one embodiment of the invention showing portions of the cross piece and adhesive means broken away.
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 showing another embodiment of the invention using two adhesive means.
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 showing another embodiment of the invention. I
FIGURE 4 is a partial view of the clip means illustrating another embodiment of the invention.
=The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions,
arrangements, combinations and improvements shown and described.
It is to be understood that both the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are exemplary but are not restrictive of the invention.
Reference will now be made to the present preferred embodiment of the invention, several examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It is to be understood that for convenience the several embodiments of the instant invention include similar elements and that such similar or common elements are indicated with identical reference numerals.
The present invention is designed for use with a bow tie which includes inner and outer bows 2, 4 forming bow portions. The how 2 includes a plurality of pleats 6. The bow portions are made of some material having an attractive design on the outer surface thereof and are formed in a conventional manner. In some instances the inner and outer bows are made from the same type of material while in other instances they are made from ditferent material. The present invention, however, is useful with either type of tie.
It is to be understood that the clip means of the present invention is conventional and no novelty is claimed in the clip means per se. Thus, only a brief description of the clip means need be given.
The clip means includes a body portion 12 to which the wings 8 engaging the inner body 2 are conveniently and pivotally attached to the body portion 12. The clip means also includes stationary wings 14 which cooperate with pivotally attached wings 16 to provide means for engaging the wings of a collar (not shown).
Typically, the wings 8 are provided with cam means 19 and the wings 16 are normally biased away from the stationary wings 14 by any convenient biasing means such as a spring (not shown). This construction permits the bow portions 2, 4 to be pivoted or moved away from the stationary Wings 14 with the wings 8 which results in the movable wings 16 being moved to an open position with respect to the stationary wings 14. At this stage, the bow tie can be engaged with the collar of a shirt in the obvious and well-known manner. After engagement with the collar, the bow portions and movable wings 8 and 16 are moved towards the immovable wings 14 to clamp the bow tie to the collar.
The present invention also nicludes a cross piece 3 which is transversely applied to the clip means 12 and the bow portions 2, 4 by wrapping the cross piece around these elements in an obvious fashion. After the wrapping operation, the ends of the cross piece may be stitched together in an obvious fashion. After the cross piece 3 has been placed in its operative position, the bow portions and the cross piece give the appearance of a bow tie knot.
As disclosed herein, the cross piece 3 is longitudinally folded to form lap portions 7, 9 and a pleat 11. It is to be understood that, of course, the invention is not limited to this form of a cross piece and that an unpleated cross piece not having longitudinal folds, is usable with the present invention.
In accordance with the present invention a bow tie including how portions, clip means and a cross piece is provided with means for preventing relative movement between the bow portions, the cross piece and the clip means.
As embodied herein, this means as shown in FIGURE 1 comprises a strip of material 20 which is saturated with adhesive coating. With reference to FIGURE 1, it will be noted that the top portion of that figure shows the outer adhesive surface 21 of the adhesive strip 26 in engagement with the inner surface of the cross piece 3. The bottom portion of FIGURE 1 shows the outer surface 21 of the adhesive strip in engagement with the cross piece 3 and the inner surface 22 of the adhesive strip in engagement with the body 12 of the clip means.
In the form of the invention illustrated in FIGURE 1, the adhesive strip is a separate strip and is wrapped or applied transversely to the bow portions and the clip means by wrapping the adhesive strip around the center portion of the how and the clip means. Subsequently, the cross piece 3 is wrapped or applied so as to overlay the adhesive strip 29 so that the adhesive strip 20 is in longitudinal engagement with the cross piece 3. Subsequently, the ends of the cross piece may be stitched or stapled together in the conventional manner (not shown).
The synergistic results achieved by this structure are obvious. The aforementioned means will effectively secure the bow portions, the cross piece and the clip means together, thereby preventing relative movement between these elements. Thus a bow tie is formed having an attractive appearance which maintains its attractive appearance after long periods of use.
It will be appreciated that it is not necessary to the present invention that a separate adhesively saturated strip be used. Thus, it is within the scope of the present invention to provide a cross piece having an inner surface with an adhesive coating partially or completely thereon. Alternatively, an adhesive strip could be attached to the cross piece 3 in any convenient manner.
In accordance with the present invention, separate adhesive means may be provided cooperating with the bow means and the clip for adhesively joining the bow portions, the clip means and the cross piece.
In this form of the invention the strips 24, 26 are applied or wrapped individually. The strip 24 is wrapped around the bow portions 2 and 4 and the strip 26 is applied or wrapped around the body 12 of the clip means. The adhesive strips come together at a point intermediate the bow portions and the clip body 12 to adhesively adhere these elements together. The cross piece 3 is, thereafter, wrapped or applied over the adhesive strips 24, 26 so that the outer surfaces 23, 27 of the adhesive strips 24, 25 engage the inner surface 5 of the cross piece 3.. Finally, the ends of the cross piece 3 may be stitched or otherwise joined together in the conventional manner.
In still another embodiment of the instant invention, adhesive means is provided for only the clip means. As embodied herein in FIGURE 3, a strip of material 28 is saturated with adhesive which is wrapped or trans versely applied to the clip body 12.
In accordance with this form of the invention, the outer surface 24 of the strip engages the inner how 2 and means .are provided for maintaining the bow portions and the clip means. This means comprises thread 30 which may be cotton, silk or nylon which is wrapped a plurality of times around the bow portions 2, 4 and the outer surface 24 of the adhesive strip.
It is contemplated that the clip means could have an adhesive coating applied thereto by spraying, for example, without departing from the inventive concept disclosed herein. This form of the invention is illustrated in FIGURE 4 where an adhesive coating 30 has been provided on the clip means body 12.
Accordingly, it is to be understood that the invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific details shown and described, but also includes within the scope of the accompanying claims any departures made from such elements which do not sacrifice its chief advantages.
