UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL KELLERMANN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
MANUFACTURE OF WIRE COATED ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,441, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed September 20, 1884. (Model To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL KELLERMANN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Coated XVire Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Ihis invention has for its object the giving of a'highly-ornamental appearance to vases, baskets, and other useful and ornamental articles made of wire-cloth; and it consists in coating said articles and fashioning or decorating the ends of the wires of which they are composed with a coating in the form of bulbs, produced by repeatedly dipping the ends of the wires in an adhesive substance or substances and covering the samewith a grand lar or flocculent material, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly-sectional face view of a square or piece of wire-cloth enibodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same after it has been blocked into an ornamental shape for any use that may be required; and Fig. 3, a view in perspective of three squares or pieces of wire-cloth embodying the invent-ion, and as united to form a structure of any desired pattern, according to the use for which it is intended.
In carrying out my invention I first take a piece of wire-cloth, A, Fig. 1, cut in the form of a square or any other suitable shape, and of any desired size, and dip the edges of the same or terminal portions of the wires in any suitable adhesive substance or compound such, for instance, as oil paint or a silicate solution, molten metal, &c.-and then cover the same with sand, baryta, wool-dust, or other granular or floeeulent material, and after the whole is dry repeat the operation till bulbs b of the required size are formed on the ends of the wires. The square or piece of wire-clothA is then blocked into shape, which may be as represented in Fig. 2, or into any other desired shape, according to the purpose for which it is intended; or a number of such squares or pieces A of wire-cloth, having the r bulbs formed on the ends of the wires, as del scribed, may be suitably shaped on or over blocks, and be riveted, wire-tied, soldered, or otherwise united togetheras, for instance, as shown in Fig. 3leaving the bulbs b exposed, as before. Ihe whole,or article, whatever it may be, as made from wire-cloth decorated with terminal bulbs, as described, is then dipped again, or may be repeatedly dipped, in the adhesive substance or compound, and covered with granular or flocculent material to give it the requir d finish.
I am aware that in the manufacture of wax flowers a single strand of cotton or wire has been formed with a globular head by dipping the same first into a gum or melted wax and then into a powder, and I therefore do not claim such invention.
My invention relates to wire-cloth and articles formed therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In the manufacture of coated wire articles made from wire-cloth, the process herein described of decorating the same, which con sists in repeatedly dipping the ends of the wires or edges of the material in an adhesive substance or compound and covering said dipped ends, which assume the form of bulbs or protuberances, with a granular or fioccnlent material, substantially as specified.
2. In the manufacture of coated wire articles, wire-cloth formed with bulbs on the ends of the wires, composed of an adhesive substance or compound and a granular or flocculent material, essentially as described.
3. In the manufacture of coated wire articles, the method herein described of making and decorating the same, which consists in constructing the article from one or more pieces of wire-cloth, repeatedly dipping the exposed ends of the wires in an adhesive substance or compound, and covering the same with granular or floeculent material to form bulbs, blocking the structure into shape, and finally coating the whole, substantially as specified.
EM'IL KELLERMANN.
