Description

P 3, 1963 E. N. BRADY 3,102,669
GARMENT HANGER Filed June 16, 1961 .Eugng MEvrady' United States Patent Filed June 16, 1961, Ser. No. 117,599 4 Claims. (Cl. 223-95) This invention relates to garment hangers, and refers 7 more particularly to pants hangers.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved pants hanger which may be made so inexpensively that its use by dry cleaners in the delivery of garments is economically feasible, despite the fact that the pants are pendently suspended therefrom by their bottoms, as distinguished from having them draped over the cross bar of a wire garment hanger as they generally have been in the past, and as a result of which the neatly cleaned and pressed pair of pants usually was delivered to the customer with an objectionable transverse crease.
Another object of this invention is to provide apants hanger which lends itself exceptionally well to use as an advertising medium.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one complete ex- FIGURE 2 is a plan view illustrating the pants hanger just inserted into the legs of the pair of pants preparatory to placement thereof into supporting engagement with the pants; and
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2, but showing the pants hanger in its operative pants supporting position.
From the accompanying drawing it will be seen that the pants hanger of this invention comprises a pair of substantially flat, rigid panels 5, 5 which are insertable into the legs 6, 6 of a pair of pants, through the bottom thereof, and when in proper position therein, grip the pant legs without, however, producing objectionable creases or other evidence of having been supported by the hanger.
The panels 5, 5 may be made of any suitable stifi material, such as cardboard, plastic, wood, or the like, de-
pending upon whether the pants hanger is to be cheap enough to be disposable, or more permanent for use in the home. In any event, the panels 5, 5 are identical in shape and have length and Width, the former being greater and the latter less than the width of an ordinary pant leg. Accordingly, the panels 5, 5' may be inserted lengthwise into the pant legs through the bottom thereof, as shown in FIGURE 2, and upon being rotated edgewise become wedged in the pant legs to thus grip the ,same and allow the pairof pants to be pendently supported by means of the panels 5, 5', as shown in FIG- URE 3.
To enable the pair of pants attached to the panels 5, 5' to be hung from a hook or other support, each panel has a tension member 7, 7 attached thereto, and preferably these tension members are provided by one endless length of cord passed through holes 8, 8 in the mem bers 5, 5'.
Preferably the panels 5, 5 have a shape which might be likened to a parallelogram With rounded corners. Thus, each end of the panels has a compound curvature defined by tangentarcs 10 and 11 of short and long radii, respectively. The major dimension or greatest length of the panels is thus diagonally across their outermost corners, which are defined by the smaller arcs 10. This shape of the panels facilitates insertion of the panels into the pant legs and, moreover, affords a gradual gripping or wedging engagement between the panels and the pant legsas the panels are rotated.
As be'st'seen in FIGURE 2, the correct disposition of the panels during their insertion into the pant legs may be said to be lengthwise in that the major dimension of the panels should be parallel with the pant legs, and to assist the user in properly orienting the panels for insertion into the pant legs, each panel preferably has an indicating arrow 12, or other suitable indicia. thereon to designate the position in which the panel is to be inserted.
Attention is directed to the fact that the holes 8', 8' which determine the points of connection between the tension members and the panels 5, 5', are nearer the end thereof which is foremost during insertion of the panels into the pant legs, so that a pull exerted on the tension members after the panels have been inserted into their respective pant legs automatically rotates the panels edge- \wise into supporting engagement with the pant legs.
Because of the relatively large area of the panels, a considerable amount of advertising indicia may be printed thereon. The pants hanger of this invention thus lends itself well to use as an advertising medium.
From :the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be readily apparent that this invention provides an improved pants hanger which may be very inexpensively produced, lends itself to use as an advertising medium, and because it pendently supports the pants from the bottom thereof, eliminates the objectionable transverse crease which results from having the pants draped over the cross bar of a wire garment hanger as they generally have been when delivered to the customer by dry cleaning establishments.
What is claimed as my invention is:
1. A pants hanger comprising: a pair of substantially flat stifi panel members each having length and width, the former being greater and the latter being less than the width of the bottom portion of a pant leg, so that said panel members are lengthwise insertable into the legs of a pair of pants through the bottom thereof, and upon being rotated edgewise while thus inserted supportingly engage the pant legs at the opposite creased edges thereof; and a tension member connected to each of said panel members providing means for hanging the panel members and a pair of pants pendently suspended therefrom, on a hook or other support, the point of connection between the tension members and the panel members being nearer that end of the panel members which is foremost during correct insertion of the panel members into the pant legs than the other end thereof, so that a pull on the tension members rotates the inserted panel members edgewise into supporting engagement with the pant legs. I
2, The pants hanger of claim 1, further characterized -by indicia on the panel members designating the direction in which they should be inserted into the pant legs.
3. The pants hanger of claim 1, further characterized by the fact that said panel members have a shape sub- 4 major dimension of said panel members is diagonally across the acuteangle corners. p
4. The pants hanger of claim 1, wherein said tension members are an endless loop of cord, the cord passing through holes in :the panel members and connecting them.

Claims (1)

1. A PANTS HANGER COMPRISING: A PAIR OF SUBSTANTIALLY FLAT STIFF PANEL MEMBERS EACH HAVING LENGTH AND WIDTH, THE FORMER BEING GREATER AND THE LATTER BEING LESS THAN THE WIDTH OF THE BOTTOM PORTION OF A PANT LEG, SO THAT SAID PANEL MEMBERS ARE LENGTHWISE INSERTABLE INTO THE LEGS OF A PAIR OF PANTS THROUGH THE BOTTOM THEREOF, AND UPON BEING ROTATED EDGEWISE WHILE THUS INSERTED SUPPORTINGLY ENGAGE THE PANT LEGS AT THE OPPOSITE CREASED EDGES THEREOF; AND A TENSION MEMBER CONNECTED TO EACH OF SAID PANEL MEMBERS PROVIDING MEANS FOR HANGING THE PANEL MEMBERS AND A PAIR OF PANTS PENDENTLY SUSPENDED THEREFROM, ON A HOOK OR OTHER SUPPORT, THE POINT OF CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TENSION MEMBERS AND THE PANEL MEMBERS BEING NEARER THAT END OF THE PANEL MEMBERS WHICH IS FOREMOST DURING CORRECT INSERTION OF THE PANEL MEMBERS INTO THE PANT LEGS THAN THE OTHER END THEREOF, SO THAT A PULL ON THE TENSION MEMBERS ROTATES THE INSERTED PANEL MEMBERS EDGEWISE INTO SUPPORTING ENGAGEMENT WITH THE PANT LEGS.
