(Cl. 20656) This invention relates to a means for hanging units on a coat hanger, and, more particularly, to a garment hanging unit for clothes to support them adhesively on a hanger without damage to the garment.

In the past, skirts and other garments have been returned to the customer from dry cleaning establishments suspended from hangers by various types of attachment mean such as pins or clips and the like. However, many of the fabrics which are currently in style are damaged by such attachment means, particularly the skirt and dresses of women. This is because many such fabrics are so constructed that the holes occasioned by pinning them up are left in the garment and quite often are snagged or slightly torn in handling. Further, clips crimp the garment which remains with an unsightly fold or wrinkle at the area of application. Also, such attachment means are given to leaving rust spots because quite often such garments are not worn each day and a woman hanging them in her closet without removing the support pins or the like often finds several weeks later that her garment has been damaged.

The instant invention provides an inexpensive garment hanging unit for adhesively supporting the garment to a coat hanger.

It is, accordingly, a general object of this invention to provide a garment hanging unit which is simple in construction. relatively inexpensive to manufacture, dispos able after use, and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.

It is another object of this invention to provide a hang- I ing unit including a first and a second strip having an adhesive face and a plain face with the adhesive face of one of the strips overlying the plain face of the other strip so that one end of the strip may be peeled apart to form a flap section on each, the flap section on one of the strips being foldable so that the adhesive surfaces are in confronting relation to clasp and hold a garment therebetween and with the other flap portion being adapted to be folded over a coat hanger so that the adhesive face of the flap portion overlays the plain surface of the flap portion of the other strip.

It is another object of this invention to provide a hanging unit of the type set forth in the foregoing paragraph which includes tabbed end portions for ready removal of the strips.

In accordance with these and other objects which will become apparent hereinafter, the instant invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating preferred embodiment thereof.

FIGURE 2 illustrates a plurality of garment hanging units mounted to a backing board and ready to be used to hang garments on coat hangers;

FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of one side of a form of the instant garment hanging unit;

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the adhesively coated face of the unit of FIGURE 3;

FIGURE 5 is a side elevational view, partly in cross section, to illustrate the application of the unit to a garment and coat hanger;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, and referring particularly to FIGURE 1, the numeral 11 generally designates a conventional coat hangef to which a garment such as 12 is to be suspended. The garment hanging unit is generally designated by the numeral 14 and, as indicated in FIGURES 3 and 4, comprises an outer and an inner folda'ble strip, 18 and 19 respectively, which in the intended use thereof are joined together at their respective

20 and 22 and along a base length indicated by the numeral 24 thereof, see FIGURE 7, by suitable means with the upper lengths of each strip comprising an adhesive flap portion, 26 and 28 respectively. Each flap portion has an adhesive coated

30 and 32 and a plain surface 34 and 36; also the base length 20 of the inner strip is adhesively coated.

In operation, as can be seen in FIGURE 7, an edge 38 of a garment to be suspended on a coat hanger 11 is adhesively grasped or clamped between the confronting adhesively coated surfaces 32 of the flap 28 and the base length 20 of the inner strip 19, the said flap being foldable along the foldline 40 and pinched manually so that the adhesive grasps the garment 12, with suflicient adhesiveness to support the weight thereof. The flap portion of the outer strip 18 is then folded over the rung 42 of the hanger into adhesive engagement with the plain surface 36 of the flap portion of the inner strip. As many garment hanger units as may be desired may be utilized to support each garment and ordinarily only two are required.

Referring to FIGURES 3 and 4, the garment hanging unit comprises the aforesaid first and a second strip which are joined together adhesively, each strip having the plain surface and the adhesive surface which are joined together in companionate relation with the plain surface of one being in adhesive engagement with the adhesive surface of the other. It will be seen that the flap ends of both strips of each unit, as well as the lower ends, are provided with a

46, 47, 48, 49, by folding the ends thereof so that the adhesively coated surfaces confront one another.

Referring to FIGURE 2, a plurality of garment hanging units are adhesively fastened in staggered relation in a straight vertical line on a backing board 51 with the adhesively coated surface of the topmost unit being in relatively loose adhesive engagement with the board and each of the successive lower units overlaying a main length of an underlying unit. Thus, each unit may be removed from the backing board by either pulling two strips downwardly or, alternatively, upwardly from the backing board and applied as aforesaid to suspend a garment. As indicated in FIGURE 2, the tabbed length of the flap end of the inner unit may be a little longer than the tabbed length of the outer strip so that each individual strip of each unit is readily accessible.-

Referring to FIGURES 5 and 6, it is apparent that the tab is not necessary at the lower end of the strip. Also, the adhesive surface of the outer strip need not extend beyond the flap portion since the base length of the strips may be joined by other suitable means. 'It is contemplated that a single length of tape may be folded in half as at the line 52 to form a garment hanging unit for mounting to a backing board by coating the single length 3 on one side with adhesive from the end to the mid-point and doing the same on the other side and then folding the single length to form a first and a second strip and so that the adhesive face of one sticks to the plain surface of the other. Further, it is seen that in accordance with this invention, a continuous length of tape may comprise a plurality of such single lengths which are transversely perforated along a tear line, not shown, at the 7 end of each single length so that a plurality of garment hanging units, connected at the perforated lines, may be mounted to the backing board to be successively peeled off along the tear lines.

While the instant invention has been shown and described herein in What is conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention, which is therefore not to be accorded the full scope of the claims so as to embrace any and all equivalent apparatus and articles.

What is claimed is:

1. A disposable garment hanging unit for use in suspending a garment from a coat hanger comprising, a length of flexible foldable tape folded transversely of the longitudinal center line of the tape intermediate the length forming a pair of legs and a vertex area of the legs at the fold line, means adjacent the vertex of the folded length to hold a portion adjacent the vertex of each leg in engagement to form a Y-shaped unit having a stem and a pair of arms, adhesive means on one face of the stem and on one face of each leg, the said faces facing in a common direction, one of the said legs being adapted to be folded toward the stem so that their respective adhesive faces confront one another to adhesively grasp the edge of a garment therebetween, the face of the other leg being adapted to be folded over a coat hanger so that the adhesive face adhesively engages the said one of the said legs.

2. A garment hanging unit as set forth in claim 1 wherein the distal ends of the legs are provided with tabs.

3. A garment hanging unit comprising:

first and second flexible uncut strip portions, each of a continuous uncut predetermined size, said strip portions being joined together in overlaying relation, with a lower portion of the first strip portion overlaying a lower portion of the second strip portion and the longitudinal center line of the portions being substantially coincident, and

with the upper portions of each strip portion comprising a flap, the upper and lower portions of said second strip and the flap of the first strip each having a face coated with an adhesive material and each flap having an opposite plain face, said plain faces facing in a common direction and with the adhesive faces of the second strip and the adhesive face of the flap of the first strip portion facing in 55 a common direction, the flap of the second strip portion being adapted to be folded on a first transverse line into confronting relation with the adhesive face of the lower portion of the second strip portion for gripping and adhesively clamping a garment therebetween with the leading edge of the garment closely adjacent said first transverse line;

the adhesive face of the flap of the first strip portion being adapted to be folded on a second transverse line substantially coincident with said first transverse line over a rung of a coat hanger to adhesively engage the rung and the plain face only of the flap of the second strip portion for suspending garments from a hanger; and

a tab portion defined at the upper and lower ends of the unit which tab portion is free and clear of adhesive on the exterior faces thereof for initiating peeling of the flaps from the rung and the garment.

4. A garment hanging unit as set forth in claim 3 wherein the ends of the strips are bent back upon themselves to define said tab portions.

In combination, a backing board and a plurality of garment hanging units, each said garment hanging unit comprising a first and second strip portion joined together along their lower ends, each of said strip portions having an adhesive face and a plain face, a portion of the adhesive face of the first strip portion overlaying in adhesive engagement a portion of the plain face of the second strip portion, with the upper portions of each strip portion comprising a flap portion with each having an adhesive face and a plain face and extending from the overlaying area of adhesive egagement, the flap portion of the second strip portion being adapted to be folded intermediate its length on a transverse fold line so that portions of the adhesive face confront one another for gripping and adhesively clamping a garment therebetween, and the flap portion of the first strip portion being adapted to be folded over a rung of a coat hanger to adhesively engage the plain face of the second strip portion, the said unit being for suspending garments from a hanger and each said unit being mounted to said backing board in a vertical line with the adhesive face of the second strip portion of each overlaying the plain face of the underlying unit to form a vertical aligned group of garment hanging units, each of which is peelable from the board.

Claims

3. A GARMENT HANGING UNIT COMPRISING: FIRST AND SECOND FLEXIBLE UNCUT STRIP PORTIONS, EACH OF A CONTINUOUS UNCUT PREDETERMINED SIZE, SAID STRIP PORTIONS BEING JOINED TOGETHER IN OVERLAYING RELATION, WITH A LOWER PORTION OF THE FIRST STRIP PORTION OVERLAYING A LOWER PORTION OF THE SECOND STRIP PORTION AND THE LONGITUDINAL CENTER LINE OF THE PORTIONS BEING SUBSTANTIALLY COINCIDENT, AND WITH THE UPPER PORTIONS OF EACH STRIP PORTION COMPRISING A FLAP, THE UPPER AND LOWER PORTIONS OF SAID SECOND STRIP AND THE FLAP OF THE FIRST STRIP EACH HAVING A FACE COATED WITH AN ADHESIVE MATERIAL AND EACH FLAP HAVING AN OPPOSITE PLAIN FACE, SAID PLAIN FACES FACING IN A COMMON DIRECTION AND WITH THE ADHESIVE FACES OF THE SECOND STRIP AND THE ADHESIVE FACE OF THE FLAP OF THE FIRST STRIP PORTION FACING IN A COMMON DIRECTION, THE FLAP OF THE SECOND STRIP PORTION BEING ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED ON A FIRST TRANSVERSE LINE INTO CONFRONTING RELATION WITH THE ADHESIVE FACE OF THE LOWER PORTION OF THE SECOND STRIP PORTION FOR GRIPPING AND ADHESIVELY CLAMPING A GARMENT THEREBETWEEN WITH THE LEADING EDGE OF THE GARMENT CLOSELY ADJACENT SAID FIRST TRANSVERSE LINE; THE ADHESIVE FACE OF THE FLAP OF THE FIRST STRIP PORTION BEING ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED ON A SECOND TRANSVERSE LINE SUBSTANTIALLY COINCIDENT WITH SAID FIRST TRANSVERSE LINE OVER A RUNG OF A COAT HANGER TO ADHESIVELY ENGAGE THE RUNG AND THE PLAIN FACE ONLY OF THE FLAP OF THE SECOND STRIP PORTION FOR SUSPENDING GARMENTS FROM A HANGER; AND A TAB PORTION DEFINED AT THE UPPER AND LOWER ENDS OF THE UNIT WHICH TAB PORTIONS IS FREE AND CLEAR OF ADHESIVE ON THE EXTERIOR FACES THEREOF FOR INITIATING PEELING OF THE FLAPS FROM THE RUNG AND THE GARMENT.
