To @ZZ 107mm/ it may concern: Be it known that l, ERNST DonINe, of th city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 1Wardrobe-Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,i`orxning a part of this specitication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

lThe object of this invention is to facilitate thc opening and closing of folding beds, and also to promote strength, durability, and security in the construction of such beds.
The invention consists in a folding bed constructed with the upright case,and the bedframe connected by a bar having end shoulders, a smooth section, and a toothed section separated by a recess, and an angular bar having a smooth section and a curved toothed section, whereby the fulcrum-point will be changed automatically as the bed-frame is lowered and raised,and the bed-frame will be prevented from going too i'ar in either direction. The weight-carrying board is connected with the bed-iframe by eye-plates, pivots, and pivot-bars, so that the said weight-carrying board will be free to move up and down as the bed is opened and closed. rlhe weightcarrying board is provided with guide-bars,to rest a-nd slide upon guard-boards connected with the stationary case by angle-irons,-to keep the weight board and its attached weights in place as they move up and down. To the weight-board are attached recessed brackets, to forni a pocket to receive the weights, as will behereinafter fully described.
A represents the stationary part or case of the bed, and B is the folding part or bedframe, which is so formed as to fold up into the case A. The lower parts of the sides of the case A are extended forward,and to them are attached the lower parts, C, of the supporting and hinging brackets, which parts C are made in the form of a bar having upwardly-projecting shoulders 1 2 at its rear and forward ends, to serve as stops to the upper parts, D, of the said brackets. The upper edge, 3, of the bar G from the shoulder l forward for about onesthird of its length is made smooth,and the forward part of the said edge is provided with teeth e.
ln the upper edge of the bar (Lat the point of meeting of the smooth part 3 and the toothed part 4, is formed a recess, 5, to receive the angle of the upper part, D, hereinafter described.
The upper part, D, of the brackets is made in the form of an angular bar, and is attached to the side boards of the bed-frame B in such a position that the smooth edge 6 of the lower arm of the said bar will be at right angles with the smooth edge 3 of thebar C when the bed is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, and parallel with and resting upon the said edge 6 when the bed is closed, as shown in Fig. 1. rlhe edge 7 of the forward arm of the bar D is curved and toothed, to engage with the toothed edge 4 of the bar G, as shown in Fig. 2. 71th this construction, when the bed is fully opened, the point o1 contact between the bars C D will be at the forward ends of the said bars, and as the bed is being closed the said point of contact will move gradually to the rearward. In opening the bed the fulcrunrpoint or point of contact between the bars C D is moved gradually forward or toward the center ot' the bed-frame, so that the operator will have the greatest advantage ot` leverage when the greatest weight is to be sustained. As the bed is opened and closed the angle 8 at the forward end of the smooth edge 6 enters the recess 5 of the bar C, and
-serves as a pivot until the teeth 7 or" the bar D come into contact with the teeth 4 of the bar C.
To the rear upper corners of the side boards of the bed-frame B are attached upwardlyprojecting eye-plates E, in the eyes of which are pivoted pins F, formed upon or attached to the lower ends of the bars G. The upper ends of the bars G are attached to the lower corners of the board H, to the outer side of the en'ds of which are attached the lower ends of bars I. The upper ends of the bars I project to rest against and slide upon the guardboards J, secured to the side boards of the case A. by angle-irons K, or other suitable means that will forni a connection of the necessary strength to support the said boards against the outward pressure of the guide-bars I.
To the end parts of the outer side ot' the board H are attached the flanged inner edges of the brackets L, the adjacent sides of which are recessed, as shown in Figs. I, 2, and 3, so that the two brackets L form an open pocket to receive the weights M, to balance the bedframe B and allow it to be easily opened and closed. A

In a folding bed, the combination, with I the stationary upright case A and the bed`- iralne B, of the bar C, having end shoulders, l 2, smooth sections 3, toothed section 4 and rel cess 5, and the angular bar D, having smooth section 6 and curved toothed section 7, substantially` as herein shown and described, whereby the fulcruin-point will be changed automatically, and the bed-frame will be prevented' from going` too far in either direction, as set i'orth.
2. In a folding bed, the combination, with the board H, having recessed bracket L for carrying the weight, guide bars I, guardboards J, angle-irons K, and the stationary upright case A, of the movable bed-frame B, eye-plates E, pivots F, and pivot-bars G, substantially as shown and described.
