Description
AUTOGLAVE TO BE USED IN THE TRBATMBNTOF FATTY MATTERS. No. 309,515. v Patented Dec. 23, 1884.
UNiTE are r rri es.
EDMOND O. BAUJARD, OF NETV YORK, N. Y.
AUTOCLAVE TO BE USED IN THE TREATMENT OF FATTY MATTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,515, dated December 23, 1884. Application filed March 6, 1854. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND 0. BAUJARD, now residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Autoclaves to be used in the Treatment of Fatty Matters; and I hereby declare the fol lowing to be a description thereof.
The object of my improvement is to secure the more perfect and thorough action of steam admitted into the lower part of an autoclave throughout the entire contents of the auto clave.
Autoclaves, as ordinarily constructed, have steam supplied to them through a pipe extending down from the top and terminating near the bottom in a perforated coil, from which the steam escapes. The pipe and coil occupy considerable space. Moreover, the pressure of the steam tending to uncoil or straighten out the coil causes it oftentimes to rise from the bottom of the autoclave, and consequently a portion of the stock below the coil is allowed to remain inert, and is not sub jected to the action of the steam or to contact with the other portion of the stock. This is quite a serious objection, when, as is the case in manufacturing candles and soap, part of the contents has a greater density than that of the remainder on which it is desired to act, for then the denser part descends to the bot tom of the autoclave and forms there an inert mass, which in time is apt to calcine and harden from the heat, and ultimately to ob st-ruct the discharge-opening of the autoclave. Moreover, the steam-pipe leading to the coil is so exposed that it is liable to break or crack and discharge steam into the autoclave, where it would materially interfere with the results sought to be obtained.
To all the objections enumerated I may add that which is due to thejoints in the coil and pipe leading thereto. It is extremely desirable that the steam should have its initial ac tion at the extreme bottom of the autoclave.
In an autoclave embodying my improvement the initial action of the steam occurs at the extreme bottom, and consequently all parts of the contents of the autoclave, whatever their density may be, are subjected to the action of the steam and brought into intimate contact,
The accompanying drawing is a sectional elevation of an autoclave embodying my improvement.
A designates an autoclave, which may be made of the usual material. As shown, it has both the lower and the upper portion rounded. In the bottom it is provided with an opening.
B is a pipe conveying steam from a pipe, E, connected toa generator or other source and discharging it through the opening of the autoclave into the interior thereof. After the steam enters it will rise through the entire contents of the autoclave. The passage of the steam through the pipe B will be controlled by a valve, E, which may be of any suitable kind, regulating its passage from the pipe E.
D designates a check-valve arranged, as here shown, between the valve E and the source of the steam.
O designates a discharge-valve arranged in a pipe, 0', extending from the pipe B. It
[controls the passage of the contents of the pipe 13 into the pipe 0.
While the contents of the autoclave are being treated the valve 0 is, of course, closed and the valve E opened; but when the contents of the autoclave are to be discharged the valve E is closed and the valve G opened. Extending from the top of the autoclave is a pipe, F. From this pipe F extend three pipes, G H I. The pipe G is provided with an airvalve, the pipe H has the needle-hole valve arranged on it, and the pipe I is provided with the steam-gage valve. The upper end of the pipe F has combined with it a safety-valve, K.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with an autoclave having a rounded or tapering lower portion, of a pipe leading to an opening in the bottom and conveying steam thereto, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the autoclave A, of the pipe B, pipe E, valve E, valve D, pipe 0', and valve 0, substantially as specified.
0. The combination, with the autoclave A,
of the pipe F, branch pipes G H T, and valve K, substantially as specified.
EDMOND O. BAUJARD. TVitnesses:
HECTOR DE CASTRO, SYINAIN Genomes.
