WEAR HO-OK FOR BACK PAD BILLETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,379, dated December 16, 1884. v
Application filed April 12, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it 71mg concern:
Be it known that I, ORANGE A. DEAN, of Parkville, Ghampaign county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Wear-Hook for Back-Pad Billets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to provide a practical and convenient wear or chafe hook, intended more especially for use on the billets of the back-pads of harnesses where the billets pass through the trace-buckles, for preventing rapid wear of the billets; and the invention consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a broken elevation showing my invention applied to a back-pad billet and trace-buckle. Fig. 2 is a broken edge view of the pad-skirt, billet, and wear-hook; and Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively, a front and edge view of the wear-hook.
A represents my new wear or chafe hook. This is formed with the stud b at the back, which is adapted to enter one or the other of the holes 0, made in the back-pad skirt B, for supporting and holding the hook in place.
In applying the wear-hook A the upper end thereof is first slipped up through the loop d' and the stud I) inserted in one of the holes 0. Then the hook portion 6 is passed through the loop f of the trace-buckle O, and then the billet D is passed through the loop f, thence outside of the hook portion 6, up through the loop d, and is then buckled into the ordinary side buckle, E, of the pad-skirt. The loop dis ar ranged below the holes 0, so that the billet 0 will draw nicely over the hook portion 6 of the hook A, thus holding it securely and firmly in place; and there being two or more of the holes 0 in the padskirt B, the hook A is adapted to be raised or lowered as circumstances require; and the hook A being held by the stud b entering one or the other of the holes, it will be seen that all strain as well as all wear is taken off the billet D, the billet serving merely as a keeper for the hook A; hence the billet D may be made very light and trim; and the stud b entering the holes c,as it does, no inconvenience will be experienced in keeping the wear-hook in place while applying or adjusting the hook in place or while arranging the billet D.
I am aware of the existence of a clasp consisting of a hook with a stud at its rear c011- vex side and with its outer end provided with a tapering inclosure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the pad skirt or strap B, having one or more holes, a, and the loop d, disposed below said holes, the billet D, and the buckle E, of the wear-hook A, with its shank and curved portion all made in a single continuous piece, and connected to and interposed throughout its entire length between the skirt-strap and billet and passed through the loop 01 of the latter, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ORANGE ARMSTRONG DEAN.
