BRAKE DEVICE FOR THE REELS OF THREAD-WORKING MACHINES Filed Dec. 5, 1961 United States Patent assignor to Ak- Arth, Sehwyz,
The present invention relates to a brake device for the reels of thread-working machines, e.g. thread winding or shed machines, in which the reel is driven by a grooved drum guiding the thread or threads to-and-fro along the reel. With the known brake devices a brake blade is provided, which has a wedge-shaped operative portion, which in the case of a fault is pushed between the reel and the drum with the aid of means released by a threadsurveying device.
The invention has the object of increasing the braking effect of such braking device, either to bring the reel to a standstill move quickly when the rotational speed is the same as before, or to be able to brake the reel from an increased rotational speed without involving a greater number of revolutions before coming to a standstill.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent later from this specification and the accompanying drawing, I provide a brake device for the reels of threadworking machines comprising in combination: a frame, a reel and a grooved drum journalled in said frame, said drum being in driving connection with said reel and guiding the thread or threads to-and-fro along said reel, a main brake blade slidably mounted on said frame and having a wedge-shaped effective portion, a thread-surveying means in operative connection with said main brake blade and with at least one thread, and upon detecting of a fault pushing said main brake blade with its effective portion between said reel and said drum, and an additional brake blade mounted on said main brake blade and abutting said reel when said effective portion of said main blade is pushed between said reel and said drum.
These and other features of my said invention will be readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof given by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a reel with its brake device in the rest position;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation corresponding to FIG. 1 but with the brake device in operative position; and
FIG. 3 is a front elevation of the brake device as viewed in the direction of the arrow III of FIG. 1, on a slightly enlarged scale.
According to FIGS. 1 and 2 a reel 1 is mounted for rotation about an axle 2 on a reel holder 3, which is in turn mounted for pivotal movement about an axle 4 on the frame 5 of a winding machine. The reel 1 is driven in the conventional way by a grooved drum 6, which at the same time moves the thread 7 to-and-fro along the reel 1, so that the thread is coiled upon the latter in layers of mutually crossing threads. The directions of rotation of the reel 1 and of the grooved drum 6 as well as the direction of movement of the thread are indicated by arrows.
When the thread 7 tears or has an irregularity which has been ascertained by a thread cleaner, a thread surveyor brings a brake device 8 into operation in a conventional way. The brake device 8 has, likewise in a known manner, a brake blade 9, which is composed of a wedge-shaped effective portion 9a and a plate shaped 3 ,092,341 Patented June 4, 1963 guide portion 9b, which is guided in a guide 10 provided on the frame 5.
From the side faces of the brake blade 9 two pins 11 project outwardly in alignment with one another, on which two levers 12 are pivotally mounted, which carry together an additional or auxiliary brake blade 13. On the free ends of the levers 12 averted from the additional or auxiliary brake blade =13, tension springs 14 are attached which at the other ends thereof are fixed by means 15 to the free ends of anchoring means such as arms 16 arranged on the main blade 9. In the rest position shown in FIG. 1 of the brake device 8 the additional blade 13 is disposed perpendicularly to the main blade 9, since an edge 17 of the additional blade 13 is held in abutment with the back 18 of the wedge-shaped effective portion 9a of the main blade 9.
The brake device 8 operates as follows upon response of the thread surveyor:
The main blade 9 is shifted in the conventional manner in the direction of the arrow 19, so that its wedge-shaped effective portion 9a comes to lie between the reel 1 and the grooved drum 6, as illustrated in FIG. 2. As a result the reel 1 is separated from the grooved drum 6, so that it ceases to be driven. Moreover the reel 1 is braked by its friction on the back 18 of the effective portion 9a of the brake blade. This braking effect, which is also in- 'lierent in the conventional brake devices, is considerably reinforced in the present brake device in that here also the additional or auxiliary brake blade 13 comes into contact with the reel 1, being turned in the clockwise sense of FIG. 2 against the force of the springs 14. v
The increase of the effect of the brake device owing to the additional brake blade 13 amounts to about 50%, which, expressed in other terms, means that the thread may be wound at a speed which is about 50% higher than usual, without the reel performing more revolutions during :the braking period than with the former brake device not provided with an additional brake blade 13.
The possibility of letting winding or shed machines run faster than before is of great economical advantage. Rapid braking is particularly important with shed machines, in which as well known, several threads are brought together in parallel and are wound on the same reel; this reel has to be brought to a standstill in case of rupture of a thread before the broken end of the thread is coiled up, since otherwise the operator has to pull the coiled-up threads off the reel until she finds this end, which is a time wasting operation.
Of course numerous modifications of the brake device illustrated are possible. In particular, the tension springs 14 may be attached on the frame 5 with their ends remote from the levers 12 instead of on the ends of arms arranged on the main blade 9. Moreover it is not absolutely necessary to arrange the additional blade 3 pivotally although this is very advantageous, in order that its braking position may adapt itself to the diameter of the reel 1 which increases during the coiling operation, and that the main blade 9 may always perform an equal, nonresilient stroke when braking. The additional blade may alternatively be mounted slida'bly against spring bias on the main blade. Moreover the additional blade need not be plane, and may have e.g. a convex brake surface.
While I have herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing what may be considered a typical and particularly useful embodiment of my said invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not myself to the particular details and dimensions described and illustrated.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A brake device for the reels of thread-winding maing connection with said reel for chines of the type comprising a frame, a reel and a grooved drum journalled on said frame and being in driving connection with said reel for guiding and driving the thread to-and-fro along said, reeL'said brake device comprising a main brake blade having :a wedge shaped brake portion and a guide portion siidably mounted on said frame [for moving said wedge shaped portion into operative position intermediate said drum and said reel, and an auxiliary brake blade, means pivotally supporting said auxiliary brake blade on said main brake blade, said auxiliary brake blade being movable with said main brake blade and engaging said reel in response to movement of said main brake blade, said means pivotally supporting said auxiliary brake blade on said, main brake blade in eluding a pair of arms each extending from one end of said auxiliary brake blade, and a pair of pivot pins one each disposed endwise of said main blade to pivotally support one said arm, and a pair of biasing springs one each secured with one end to the end of one said arm and with the other end to an anchor point disposed in fixed position relative to said auxiliary brake blade [for vbiasing said auxiliary brake blade toward said reel.
2. A brake device for the reels of thread-winding machines of the type comprising a frame, a reel and a grooved drum journalled on said firame and being in drivguiding and driving the thread to-and-fro along said reel, said brake device comprising a main brake blade having a wedge shaped brake portion and a guide portion slidably mounted on said frame for moving said wedge shaped portion into operative position intermediate said drum and said reel, and
an auxiliary brake blade, means pivotally supporting said auxiliary brake blade on said main brake blade, said auxiliary brake blade being movable with said main brake blade and engaging said reel in response to movement of said main brake blade, said means pivotally supporting said auxiliary brake blade on said main brake blade ineluding a pair of arms each extending from one end of said auxiliary brake blade, and a pair of pivot pins one each disposed endwise of said main blade to pivotally support one said arm, and a pair of biasing springs one each secured with one end to the end of one said am and with the other end to an anchor point disposed in fixed position relative to said auxiliary brake blade for biasing said auxiliary brake blade toward said reel, said auxiliary brake blade having an edge extending parallel to said wedge shaped brake portion, said edge being biased by means of said springs into engagement with said Wedge shaped brake portion for the inoperative position of said brake.
3. A brake device for the reels of thread-winding machines of the type comprising a :frame, a reel and a grooved drum journalled on said frame and being in driving connection with said reel for guiding and driving the thread to-and-fro along said reel, said brake device comprising a main brake blade having a Wedge shaped brake portion and a guide portion slidably mounted on said frame for moving said wedge shaped'portion into operative position intermediate said drum and said reel, and an auxiliary brake blade, means pivotally supporting said auxiliary brake blade on said main brake blade, said auxiliary brake blade being movable with said main brake blade and engaging said reel in response to movement of said main brake blade, said auxiliary brake blade having an edge extending parallelto said wedge shaped brake portion and having pivot arm means extending substantially perpendicularly to said edge, and spring means extending between said pivot arm means and anchor support means carried by said main brake blade biasing said edge into engagement with said wedge shaped brake portion for the inopenative position of said brake.

Claims (1)

1. A BRAKE DEVICE FOR THE FEELS OF THREAD-WINDING MACHINES OF THE TYPE COMPRISING A FRAME, A REEL AND A GROOVED DRUM JOURNALLED ON SAID FRAME AND BEING IN DRIVING CONNECTION WITH SAID REEL FOR GUIDING AND DRIVIG THE THREAD TO-AND-FRO ALONG SAID REEL, SAID BRAKE DEVICE COMPRISING A MAIN BRAKE BLADE HAVING A WEDGE SHAPED BRAKE PORTION AND A GUIDE PORTION SLIDABLY MOUNTED ON SAID FRAME FOR MOVING SAID WEDGE SHAPED PORTION INTO OPERATIVE POSITION INTERMEDIATE SAID DRUM AND SAID REEL, AND AN AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE, MEANS PIVOTALLY SUPPORTING SAID AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE ON SAID MAIN BRAKE BLADE, SAID AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE BEING MOVABLE WITH SAID MAIN BRAKE BLADE AND ENGAGING SAID REEL IN RESPONSE TO MOVEMENT OF SAID MAIN BRAKE BLADE, SAID MEANS PIVOTALLY SUPPORTING SAID AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE ON SAID MAIN BRAKE BLADE INCLUDING A PAIR OF ARMS EACH EXTENDING FROM ONE END OF SAID AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE, AND A PAIR OF PIVOT PINS ONE EACH DISPOSED ENDWISE OF SAID MAIN BLADE TO PIVOTALLY SUPPORT ONE SAID ARM, AND A PAIR OF BIASING SPRINGS ONE EACH SECURED WITH ONE END TO THE END OF ONE SAID ARM AND WITH THE OTHER END TO AN ANCHOR POINT DISPOSED IN FIXED POSITION RELATIVE TO SAID AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE FOR BIASING SAID AUXILIARY BRAKE BLADE TOWARD SAID REEL.
