MILK-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,162, dated December 9, 1884.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLns NV. PUsHnck, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of IllinOis, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the fol lowing is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in milk-cans, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of a link-hinge securing the cover and can together, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in "the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a nlilkran with the invention in use, and Fig. 2 is a detail view ot' my improvement.
A represents a milk-can, and A its cover, both being made in the usual and well-known manner, and provided with the side iianges, a a, projecting out-ward and upward, as inthe drawings.
B represents a link, which is passed through these flanges, and acts both as a hinge for the cover and as a lock to secure it from being entirelyr detached from the can and lost or stolen. This lock or link is made as in Fig, 2, out out on one side, as at b, and provided with a sliding sleeve, B. W'ithin this sleeve is secured a spring hook or catch, b', having a beveled nose, as represented, and which engages with a beveled notch, b2, in the adjacent end of the main portion ol" the link. Vhen the cover is in place, the link is passed through its iiange and that of the can, and the sleeve being shoved forward its spring-catch engages with the notched end of the link and locks it securely. This in no way interferes with the removal of the cover for filling or cleaning the can, but prevents the separation and consequent loss ofthe cover from the can, as often happens.
Whenever, for any reason, it is desired by the owner of the can to entirely release the cover, asmall key, C, is inserted in the keyhole c, and upon turning it presses back the catch and releases the sleeve, which is then easily slid back and leaves the link open for removal. rllhe flat surface of the Springeatch, sliding against a flattened portion, Z, of the link, eft'ectually prevents the sleeve from becoming twisted, and always holds the devices in proper position for registry. The lockhinge thus formed is very cheap and simple, and prevents all attempts at removing the cover, except by the proper owner, who has the key, the section ot' tubing which slides to and fro being too small to render access to its interior possible. The spring-catch b is here represented as secured in place by a pin or rivet, d, which passes entirely through the sleeve; but this spring-hook may of course be secured in any other manner found most suitable for the purpose.
Having thus i'ully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, isw
l. The combination, with a milk-can and its cover, of a hingelink open on one side, and provided with a sleeve sliding upon the link vto close the opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a milk-can and its cover, of a hinge-link passed through both can and cover, and formed with an opening in one side, and a sleeve sliding upon one end of the link, and adapted to be engaged with the opposite eind, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A link formed with an open side, one end ot' which is formed with a beveled notch, in combination with a sleeve sliding upon the other end of the link, and provided with a spring-catch to engage and lock the parts together, substantially as shown and described.
et. The link B, formed with notch b2 vand opening b, in combination with the sleeve B, having spring-catch b, and keyhole c, and the key C, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth. p
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, CHARLES IV. PUSI-IECK.
