SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,111, dated December 9, 188%.

To all whom it may concern,

Be it known that I, Isaac R. VAN SLYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in XVardrobe-Beds, of which the following is a specification, to wit:

- This invention relates to an improvement in folding beds; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and arrangement. referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bed folded up. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when opened out. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section, and Figs. 4 and 5 are details of parts thereof.

A represents the base of the bed, consisting of a rectangular frame or case having its ends cut away, as seen at a, for apurpose presently described. The side frames of the bedstead B are cut in two in the center, and each part is pivoted in the base by a bolt, b, or a rod extending entirely through the frame, as may be desired. The adjacent ends of the bedsections are curved on a circle struck from the respective pivotal points, and these curved portions are provided with a series of cogs or teeth, I), which interlock, and by means of which either section is operated by the movement of the other, as will be readily understood.

Each of the side pieces, B, of the bed-frame is provided with a hinged flap, B, which, when closed, forms a portion of the side piece, and is provided with cogs, as represented. \V hen these side flaps, B, are folded down, they rest upon the curved or cut-out portions of the ends of the frame or base A, and thus aid in holding the bed firmly,whileforming a surface flush with the end of the base.

The external case, base, and ends, when closed, are made to represent any desired article of furniture, and it is intended to provide it with a bottom of woven wire, as shown at c.

When the bed is closed, as in Fig. 1, it occupies little space, and when it is desired to open it out one portion of the frame is pulled outward, and by the interlocking cogs or teeth the other is thrown out or turned on its pivotal point at the same time till the frame is opened to the position seen in Fig. 2. The side flaps are then turned down, as in Fig. 4, and the bed is locked open, it being impossible to close it till these flaps are turned up again. XVhen opened out in this way, the bedsections rest upon the edges of the base, and the flaps on the end pieces of the same, thus firmly supporting it under any weight, and preventing the rocking so common in this class of articles. The bed being divided in the center and locked-together by the cogs, it is evident that the movement of one part causes the movement of the other,and ease of operation is obtained.

To more firmly secure the bed when open and remove the strain from the hinges of the side flaps, I provide the frame or base A with a T-rail, D, extending entirely across its center, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, against the under side of the head-flanges of which the extreme ends of the sections B B catch.

I am aware that interlocking cogs have been heretofore used in folding beds, and also that the two parts of the bedframe have been pivoted to the base, so that the movement of the one causes the movement of the other, and I do not claim the same, broadly.

That I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

I. In a folding bed, the combination, with a supporting frame or case, of a bedframe made in two parts, each of which is pivoted in the supporting frame or case, and provided with interlocking cogs or teeth, whereby the movement of one part of the bed causes an equal movement of the other part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a folding bed, the bedframe made in two parts, having their adjacent ends curved and provided with cogs or teeth, and provid ed with hinged side flaps of corresponding form, in combinationwith the supporting frame or case, having its ends cut out to correspond with the side flaps when they are turned down, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
