SCAFFOLD-GLAMR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,038, dated December 9, 1884-.
Application filed July 18. 1884.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. FLAOH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved ScaffoldGlamp,
5 of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved clamp for uniting and holding together the posts and beams used in erecting scaffolding for building or other purposes.
The invention consists in a U-shaped bar having hooks 'formed 011 the free ends, and pegs or studs on the inner surface of its crosspiece. The said cross-piece has its inner surface convexed transversely, and has a longitudinal rib on its outer surface.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is an elevation of part of a scaffolding constructed with my improved clamp.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line zz, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line yy, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional View on the line 0 c, Fig. 4.
A U-shaped metal bar, A, having hooks B on the ends, has its cross-piece A made convex transversely on the inner side, and from the said convex surface one or more rows of pegs, prongs, or studs, D, project. A longitudinal strengthening rib, A, is formed on the outer surface of the crosspiece of the clamp-bar A. The hooks B either project laterally from the ends of the prongs and are then in the plane of the bar, or they pro- 0 ject from the plane of the bar. If two posts, a Z), are to be held together by means of the clamp, the ends of the posts are overlapped, as shown in Fig. 1, and two or more U-shaped bars A are placed against the overlapping part of each post, the hooks being at the inner sides of the posts. The hooks B of the bars A of each pair are at right angles to each other, and the corresponding hooks of each pair of bars are interlocked or engaged 50 as shown. The upper pole, Z1, slides down un- (No model.)
der the action of its own weight, thereby in clining the clamps, as shown, thus forcing the pegs or studs D into the poles and giving the clamp an absolutely firm grip. In case ledgers F are to be supported, a bar, G, is used, which has large hook-prongs H on the ends of the shanks, and which has an outwardlyprojecting prong J, at the inner part of each shank. The bar G is also provided with the pegs or studs D on the cross-piece, and hooks H. It is placed against the upright beam in such a manner that the pegged or studded side of the-cross-piece rests against the pole, and the hook-prongs Hproject from that side of the pole against which the ledger rests, the outer end of the said ledger resting upon the said prongs H.
To hold the bar G in place, a bar, A, is used, the hooks B of which are passed under the prongs J, the cross-pieces of' the bars G and A being on opposite sides of the upright beam, as shown in Fig. 1.
The advantages of my improved clamps are that they are much stronger, safer, and cheaper than ropes; the scaffolding can be adjusted, 7 erected, or taken down more readily,- they are not influenced by weather, and they prevent the poles from slipping or turning.
If desired, the U-shapcd pieces may be provided with a joint at the middle, as shown at R in Fig. 2. By providing this joint the clamp can be adapted for posts of different thicknesses.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 8 5 Patent- 1. A scaffold-clamp consisting of a U- shaped bar having hooks on the ends of its prongs, studs or pegs on the inner surface of its cross-piece, and a longitudinal rib on the 0 outer surface of its cross-piece, substantially as herein shown and described. 7
2. A scaffold clamp consisting of a U- shaped bar having hooks on the ends of its prongs, and provided with a cross-piece the 5 inner surface of which is conveXed transversely, and provided with pegs or studs, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. A U-shaped bar, G, having hook-prongs H at the free ends and prongs J at the inner part,- substantially as herein shown and prongs, and pegs or studs on the inner edge 10 described. of its cross-piece, which bar is hinged in the 4. The combination, with a U-shaped bar, cr0ss-piece, substantially as herein shown and A, having hooks 0n the free ends, of a U- described.
5 shaped bar, G, having hook-prongs H on the free ends and prongs J at the inner part, ARTHUR FLASH substantially as herein shown and described. Witnesses:
5. A scaffold clamp consisting of a U- OSCAR F. GUNZ, shaped bar having hooks on the ends of its 0. SEDGWIOK.
