It is apparent that the entire operation may be done with the tray being held in the palm of the attendants hand. Means are also provided to lock the wire bail or handle in position when the imprinter is not in use.
Referring to FIG. 1 ofthe drawing wherein the imprinter embodying our invention Vis designated yby reference character 10, said imprinter is shown with the credit card 12 and the blank invoice slip 14 being inserted in imprinting position thereon. y
The imprinter comprises a substantially rectangular tray 16 having vertical side walls 18 and end walls 22 and 24. The base or floor 20 of said tray 16 is lined with a layer 26 of a resilient material such as molded soft rubber, and said layer 26 is provided with a group of upstanding protrusions 28 which serve as stop members for indexing the credit card when same is inserted into said tray. These stop members also provide spacing between the invoice and the layer 26 so that the card 12 may be slipped therebetween. A slot 27 is provided in one of said walls 13 and is adapted to permit ther passage of said credit `card 12 into said tray 16, the card being inserted until it abuts the stop members 28. Embossed indicia 32 may be provided upon the layer 26 in a predetermined location adjacent the position of the embossed indicia contained on the credit card 12. This indicia 32 may be in the form of upraised rubber or metal type or printing blocks or the like and is generally utilized to convey the identifying indicia of the seller upon said invoice. An adjustable date stamp liner may also be utilized so that current dates may be inserted therein.
A pair of coextensive elongate slots 34 are provided along the length of said side walls 1-8, one in each said wall and said slots being parallel one to the other. Mounted in said slots at one end of said tray 16 adjacent wall 22 thereof is a shaft 36, said shaft being secured in place by washers 38 and fastening means 40 so that Said shaft is movable along the length of ysaid slots 34 across the entire length of the tray 16. Mounted for rotation uponV said shaft 36 is a roller 42. Said roller 42 is formed from a non-frangible material such as soft rubber or felt or some synthetic resinwhich has been chemically treated or impregnated with a printing material such as ink or the like whereby when said roller is drawn against material which has been placed over an embossed surface, a marking corresponding to said embossedl surface Will be made upon said material. The roller is disposed closely adjacent one side wall of said tray so that as the shaft '36 is drawn across the tray 16, the roller comes into contact with the embossed surfaces of the credit card 12 and other protruding indicia, through the paper of the invoice slip 14. Wall 22 may also be provided with an outwardly extending ilange (not shown) to shield the roller 42 when the latter is rest position.
The track formed by the slots 34 forces the shaft and roller 42 to be drawn across the length of the tray 16 so that the said roller 42 exerts a pressure against the said embossed surfaces. This is accomplished by having that part of the slot 34 which is designated 46 disposed parallel to but lower than portion 48 of said slot 34, the two portions being connected by portion 50 thereof.
It should be noted that the pressure exerted by the roller upon the invoice surface and against said embossed sur- `faces is suiiicient to print markings representing said indicia upon the invoice primarily because of the resilient nature of the lining layer 26.
The means provided for pulling the shaft 36 and roller 42 acrosssaid tray comprises a U-shaped bail 52 lhaving a looped handle 54 and ends `56 .secured around said shaft adjacent both ends thereof and on the interior of said tray 16. The bail 52 is formed from a spring wire, the ends thereof exerting a resilient force against the respective side walls 18 of the tray. The said -bail 52 is threaded through a pair of spaced horizontal slots 58 and 5S formed in the front Wall 24 of said tray so that when the looped handle 54 is pulled, the shaft 36 and its roller 42 are forced to follow the slot or guide means 34 with pressure being exerted by said roller upon the invoice slip against the embossed indicia 31 and 32. Vertical slots 60 and 62 are provided in said front wall 24 communicating with a respective one of the horizontal slots 58 and 58. These latter slots 60 and 62 permit upraising of the bail 52 to permit removal of the imprinted invoice slip. The left portion of the bail 52 may be squeezed so that the arms thereof pass through the said slots 60 and 62, and 4the iinished slip thus may be removed. Although shown in this embodiment as cooperating vertical and horizontal slots, an equivalent construction may -be obtained by utilizing a pair of arcuate slots or paths formed in said front wall. Said front Wall may also have a midportfion 63 thereof blanked out leaving portions 65 and 66. In this case slots 5S and 58 would 'be in communicay.
tion with one another, and slots 60 and 62 would be continuous with the such continuous slots 58 and S8', and, in actuality, would be a single wide slot, the walls thereof being either arcuate or straight.
From the description above the operation of the novel portable imprinting device should be apparent, however, -a short description thereof for illustrative purposes in connection with gasoline service station credit purchases may -be still in order. Initially the device may be readied for use by pre-insertion of a blank invoice form 16 therein by squeezing the bail S2 so that it passes through slots 60 and 62. The bail 52 isl then replaced through said vertical slots to lie threaded through horizontal slots 58 and 58. Thus loaded the device may be carried in a holster (not shown) adapted to be worn upon the person of the attendant as on a belt or the like. The imprinter may just as easily be worn unloaded, the blank invoice being placed therein at the time of use.
When a purchase is made, the credit card identifying the purchaser is handed to said attendant and inserted into the imprinter through the slot 27 provided therein. Then, for example, the quanitity of gasoline purchased and the price is written upon said invoice in the space provided, the bail 52 is then drawn by the .looped handle 54 so that the shaft 36 passes along the guide means track 34 with the roller 42 in pressure contact with the invoice over the embossed surfaces, the imprint being made, the bail then being pushed back -to return the roller to original condition and the credit card withdrawn.
The tray containing the thus completed invoice is then presented to the customer for his signature, and atte-r said signature is placed thereon, the attendant squeezes the bail 52, removes the invoice, perhaps after checking the signature thereon with that on the credit card for veritication of identity, and gives the credit card and a copy of the invoice to the customer, retaining a copy for billing. The imprinter may then be reloaded with a `fresh invoice and inserted in the holster ready for repeated use.
The invention may conceivably need only be used for the imprinting process; any handwritten notations, includling the notations of amount of purchase, signature of purchaser, etc. being placed on the invoice after removal thereof from the imprinter device, utilizing the underside thereof as a support.
In describing the operation of our invention, a certain order of operational steps were described above. It should be clearly understood that the order so stated is not critical and some steps can be taken out of said order, interposed with others, or even left out without departing from the scope of the invention herein described.
The invention also conceivably may comprise a tray device wherein the floor portion 20, with its resilient layer 26 may be hinged to the rear wall 22, or even to portions of the side walls 18 closely adjacent the right hand portion of slot 34. The front and rear Walls of the tray may possibly be eliminated altogether, with the tray floor being separated from the slotted walls i8, and said removable tray having upstanding resilient clamp portions substituting for said Walls 22 and 24.
The invention also contemplates that the entire credit card may be accommodated within the said imprinter device by increasing the width thereof. While the slot -27 maybe convenient for inserting the credit card 12, said card may be merely placed upon the interior of the tray with the embossed area upraised, the card resting upon the resilient layer 26, with the invoice form placed over said card.
A substantial savings in time results from the convenience in utilizing the invention by conducting the entire transaction at the exact site of the transaction without leaving the customer, without returning to any main oiiice, or other area, station, or going anywhere else to imprint said invoices. MoreI important is the increased customer satisfaction resulting from speedy service obtainable through the use of our novel portable imprinter.
Although We have particularly shown our portable irnrinter associated with use in a gasoline service station, it is obvious that our device is applicable to any use whereupon embossed indicia 4is `desired to be imprinted upon a material and said imprinting device is `desired to be carried upon the person of the individual using same.
=It is believed that our invention, its mode of operation and construction and assembly, and many of its advantages should be readily understood from the foregoing without further description, and it should also be manifest that while a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described for illustrative purposes, the structural details are nevertheless capable of Wide varation within the purview of our invention as defined inthe `appended claims.
