This invention relates to printing devices of the type utilizing portable printing plates such as carried by charge customers of stores, gasoline filling stations, etc., or by members of organize.- tions such as veterans or government employees who have occasion to identify themselves from time to time as for example when calling for social security benefits.
The objects of the invention are to provide a printing device which is simple and economical in construction, which produces uniform printing with inexpensive plates even when the plates are somewhat distorted, which is easy to operate, and which is durable and reliable in use.
In one aspect the device has a slot to receive sales Slips or the like, with one or more seats for printing plates on one side of the slot, in combination with a printing roller and a cam on the other side of the slot for pressing the roller against the slips, the cam having a rise at one end to permit the roller to move away from the slips and another cam opposite the rise positively to move the roller away from the slips at the end of its printing movement, and means for moving the roller back and forth along the cams. The actuator preferably has a leg extending along each end of the roller, the legs having transverse slots for the ends of the roller to permit the cams to move the roller transversely of the actuator as the roller is moved back and forth as aforesaid. In the preferred embodiment the device is arranged to receive two printing plates and they are arranged to slide in edgewise from opposite sides of the device, preferably with means beyond the ends of the roller for holding the plates in position on their seats. The device may also comprise type Wheels with means extending out of one side of the device for resetting the wheels. The cams preferably comprise detachable plates mounted on the sides of the device for cooperation with trunnions on the ends of the roller.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view;
Fig. 2 is a side view;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view with the side plate removed and parts in section;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is an isometric view of one of the printing plates.
The particular embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration comprises upper and lower portions I and 2 the former USING PORTABLE preferably being in the form of a casting and the latter in the form of a pressed-metal base. Intermediate the two portions is a plate 3 which is secured to the base 2 by means of screws and to the frame block I by means of tight-fitting pins 4. At the left end of the machine (Fig. 3) a filler piece 6 is mounted on the plate 3 by means of screws. Intermediate the block I andbase 2 is a slot '1 to receive the sales Slip or-other sheets to be printed. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the printing device may be mounted on a sheet metal holder 5! having a pocket 52 for a book of sales slips or the like.
Mounted on the base below theslot l are two seats 3 and 9 for printing plates II and I2 which slide into theslot from opposite sides as shown in Fig. 4. The plate H is constructed as shown in Fig. 6 with a flange I3 which extends under the outer edge of the seat 9 to hold the plate in the printing position shown in Fig. 4. The plate i2 is mounted on the end of a card M as disclosed in the copending application Serial No. 781,036, filed October 21,- 1947, now Patent No. 2,538,137. The plate I2 is held on its seat 8 by means of a roller l6 actuated by springs H, the roller having trunnions extending through slots in the flanges N3 of a card tray l9 mounted on a struck-u shelf 25 of the base 2 through the medium of a block 22. Referring to Fig. 4, the plate I l slips into the slot from the right and the plate l2 slips in from the left. The seats 8 and 9 are mounted on posts 23 extending through the base 2 and plate 3. Mounted beneath the base 2 are leaf springs 24 for urging the posts to their uppermost positions shown in Figs. 3 and 4 where their flanges seat against the bottom of the base 2.
Adjacent the seat 9 are printing wheels 26 which rotate on a shaft 21 journaled in a holder mounted in a recess in the base by means of screws 29. The printing wheels carry dates or other printing indicia on their periphery and are held in adiusted position by means of spring detents 3! (Fig. 5). To adjust the four printing wheels to different positions, four friction rolls 1 32 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 33 with their peripheries in frictional engagement with the peripheries of the four printing wheels respectively. The shaft 33 is journaled in a bracket 34 mounted on the side of the base 2 by means of screws 35.
For the purpose of pressing the sales slips against the printing plates and type wheels, a roller 31 is mounted to move from the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to a corresponding position at the other end of the slot 1. The roller 3 .11. we. is moved by an actuator 38 sliding lengthwise of the device and having a handle 39 at its outer end. At its inner end the actuator has two legs 4| extending along opposite ends of the roller with slots 42 (Fig. 3) to receive rollers 40 on the trunnions 43. Mounted on the sides of the block I are cam plates 44 having central surfaces 46, end rises 41 and surfaces 48 opposite the rises 41. At the ends of the stroke of the actuator 38 the surfaces 48 lift the roller out of the slot so that sales slips may be inserted or-removed,;the rises 41 permitting this lifting a ction. To assist in holding the'actuator 38 on its seat and to detain it in each of its end positions, a springpressed roller 5| bears onits uppergsurface and drops into a recess 52 in the upper surface of the actuator at each end of itsstroke. .In-.passing from one end to the other the roller is ,forced down against the sales ,slips by the central cam surfaces 46.
Byem-ploying-an ink-absorbent --roller such as disclosedin application "Serial'-No.-47,785 filed September 4,-1948,-it--isunnecessary-to use an -in;k;ribbon or carbon-paper to make an impression onthe upper surface of the uppersheet-of paper. However instead of using an ink-roller acarbon sheetmay-be-laid over the upper sales slip. By employing printing plates on e which the indicia are innon-reversed order,.as disclosed in Patent 1,801,593, the printing-is legible-when ap- --pliedto=the upper sides-of .the sheets, that is thesides opposite to the printing plates.
To effect printing it is necessary only=tomove the roller from one end of the slot to .the other. In-each end positioniit is lifted out ofithe way -so-that sales slips -may be'inserted or removed. =Whilewarious types of printing plates maybe employed, in'the illustration the plate .II is intended to be left in :the machine indefinitely whereas the plate I2 mounted on the card 14 is intended to be carried bya charge customer.
-It shouldbeunderstood that the presentdis- -closure isfor the purpose of illustration onlyand 4 that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A device for printing sales slips comprising a housing having an open-ended slot to receive theslips, means in the housing forming a seat below the slot for a printing plate positioned therein with the type facing upwardly, means including a roller in the housing for pressing the slips against the plate, the roller having end trunnions, guide means in said housing having surfaces engaging said trunnions for guiding said roller along said slot, said surfaces comprising .central portions extending along said slot for causing the roller to press the slips against the plate and. end portions extending obliquely from theslot and from said central portions, said end portions having upperand lower cam surfaces for urging the roller downwardly at the beginning-of-each stroke and upwardly at the end of each stroke, and means for causing the roller to traverse the-slot, whereby a slip may be printed during'each one-way stroke of the roller.
