FINISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,029, dated December 9, 1884.
Appncauon fusa May s, wel. (No modem the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this improvement is a cheaply-constructed and eiiicient apparatus for iinishing sorghum or boiling the juice thereof by steam to a proper consistency for molasses without danger of burning the same. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith iiled as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of our improvement. Fig. 2is a perspective view showing an increased or extended application of the same.
A is the furnace-wall.
B is the furnace provided with grate-bars, represented partly in section, as shown at b.`
B is the bridge-wall.
B is the draft-course extending to the rear end of the furnace, where it is provided with an uptake or smoke-stack, G.
O O C is the steam-generator, having its sides C and ends C made of wood, and its top and bottom made of suitable sheet metal, which is to be secured to the upper and lower edges of the sides and ends by means of screws in a way to make water-tight joints, for which purpose 'the latter may be provided with gaskets made of any suitable material.
G' is a recess or-open chamber in the front part of the steam-generator, surrounded by water and steam to 'prevent burning the sorghum-juice, which is to be first vigorously boiled therein, and from whence it is afterward transferred to the pan D, where it is taken through the final process of boiling known as finishing7 E is awater-tank mounted on a platform, E, at an elevation to the steam-generator C C C, to which it is connected by the supply or the injector pipe H, provided with a stop-cock, h', for letting on or shutting off the supply of water to the steam-generator.
I is an exhaust-pipe, for preventing a dangerous accumulation of steam in the generator, and conducting the exhaust-steaminto the tank E, and so heating the supply of water that it can be more rapidly and economically convertedinto steam for the purposeintended.
o c are faucets or gage-cocks, fior ascertaining the amount of water in the generator.
Referring to Fig. 2, D and D represent steam-boxes constructed in the same manner as the steam-generator C C G, but without the primary boiling-chamber G".
K K represent trusses, on which the steamkboxes are mounted alongside of each other and the steam generator, with the interiors of which their interiors are connected through the circulating-pipes d and d', whereby the steam boxes are continually supplied with steam, which is prevented from a dangerous accumulation therein by the exhaust-pipe I, arranged to conduct the same into the tank E, where it is made to do valuable service by so heating the supply-water that it can be readily converted into steam when let into the generator.
J is a final exhaust-pipe, through which the steam escapes into the smoke-stack. After the sorghum-j uice is primarily boiled in the steamenerator chamber CW it can be consecutivelv g 7 transferred to the boiling-pans and thoroughly finished without the least danger of burning the same.
Having explained the construction and operation of our improvement, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In an evaporating-pan, a furnace located immediately under a hot-water or steam chamber, said chamber being extended and constructed to present at one end the primary boiling-chamber C, a nishing pan located on top of the water-chamber, and a watersupply tank, E, connected near its base-with the hot-water chamber, and the pipe I, extending from the upper part of the water-chamber into the supply-tank, the parts being combined and organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
PETER D. CORYELL. J OE II. OORYELL.
