Description

5 0 J. E. CARROLL.
BOILER FEED WATER HEATINGAND PURIFYING APPARATUS. No. 585,814. Patented July 6, 1897.
I V I 11/1 UNITED STATEsj PATENT FFIQE.
JAMES EDMUND CARROLL, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BOILER FEED-WATER HEATING AND PURIFYING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,814, dated July 6, 1897.
Application filed October 20,1896. 'Serial No. 609,424. (No model.) Patented in England March 6,1895,N0.4,'792; in France January 4, 1896, No. 252,960,- in Belgium January 9, 1896,No.119,464; in Transvaal January 24, 1896, No. 1,054,
and in Western Australia February 18, 1896, No. 839.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES EDMUND GAE- ROLL, engineer, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Albany Buildings, 39 Victoria Street, \Vestininster, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Feedater Heating and Purifying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Patents have been granted for this invention in England, No. 4,792, dated March 6, 1895; in France, No. 252,960, dated January 4, 1896; in Belgium, No. 119,464, dated January 9, 1896; in Transvaal, No. 1,054, dated January 24, 1896, and in Western Australia, No. 839, dated February 18, 1896.
This invention relates to certain' improvements in apparatus and means for purifying and heating feed-water for steam-boilers by eliminating salts and other foreign substances therefrom and thereby rendering such water more serviceable for use in steam-boilers. I attain these objects by the arrangements illustrated upon the accompanying drawings, upon which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a boiler provided with an apparatus constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the same, Fig. 3 being a front elevation, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of the settling-box; Fig. 6, an enlarged section of one end of the tube, and Fig. 7 a longitudinal section showing connection to end plate.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In applying my invention to a Cornish or horizontal boiler, which may otherwise be of ordinary construction, I arrange two tubes A B within the steam-space, the ends of which tubes are prolonged through the plates at both ends of the boiler and are secured thereto in such a manner as to serve the purpose of stays, thereby materially increasing the resisting strength of the boiler. The tubes A B are preferably arranged parallel to each other and in a longitudinal direction above the level of the water. At the rear end of the boiler the tubes are connected together by means of a cross-tube 0, arranged outside the boiler, as shown on Figs. 1 and 2.
At preferably the front end of the boiler, as shown on Fig. 3, is fitted the water-supply pipe D, which is provided with a suitable valve or cook E and is connected by a small branch pipe F with the steam-space of the boiler or with the regulating-cock or with the live steam pipe. The transverse pipe O, which is arranged at the other extremity of the boiler, is to convey the feed-water which has passed through the inlettube A to the return-tube B.
The second or return tube B, after passing outthrough the front end of the boiler, enters a settling-box G, from which a branch 11, furnished with a valve or cook I and preferably arranged at one side, connects it with the boiler, and a second pipe K, also furnished with a cock L, leads from the bottom of the settling-box G to the drain or blow-off.
In operation water is admitted through the supply-pipe D into the longitudinal tube A and flows in the direction indicated by the arrows on Figs. 1 and 2 through the inlettube into the transverse tube 0 at the rear end of the boiler and thence through the other longitudinal tube B, being delivered through the connecting-pipe into the settlingbox G, whence it passes out and into the boiler. In its passage through the tubes A B, the feed-water having been heated to steam temperature, all scale-formin g matters it may contain will be deposited in the tubes, while any oil, grease, or matter in suspension still remaining will be deposited in the settlingboX G, so that the feed-water will enter the boiler practically pure and at steam temperature.
WVhen it is desired to clear out the deposits formed within the tubes, the valve or cock E on the supply-pipe D and the regulatingvalve I are closed, the blow-off cock L on the settling-box G being opened and the water in the apparatus being allowed to run off.. The valve M on the steam-pipe F is then opened and steam admitted to blow through the tubes A B, whereby all impurities are driven out through the blow-off K.
After the operation of blowing off has been effected hot Water from the boiler is allowed to enter and fill the longitudinal tubes A B by opening the regulating-valve I. By this means the condensation or unequal contraction that would occur if the feed-Water were introduced into the emptyhot pipes is avoided.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the horizontal boiler,
the feed-Water pipes extending longitudinally of the upper part thereof, the inlet-pipe A bethe rear end of the boiler, the mud-drum depending from the front or outlet end of the pipe B, the connection from the said muddrum to the boiler, and the steam-pipe at the front of the boiler connecting the steam-space with the inlet-pipe A whereby said pipe A, the rear cross-pipe O the pipe B, and the muddrunl maybe blown out, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
