SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,967, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed May 19, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARoEL JoUnnRr, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of
which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isoinetrieal perspective view representing my improved sash lock or' fastener in use; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the fastener; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view with the bed-plate removed, the bolt being represented as locked; Fig. 4, a sectional view of the boltstrip detached; Fig. 5, a side elevation of the key detached, and Fig. 6 a plan view of the bed-plate detached.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of sash looks or fasteners which are designed to be attached to the n'ieeting-rail of the lower sash, and reversible, or adapted for use at either side of the window; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts,as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more desirable and effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all con versant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the window frame or casing; B, the upper and G the lower sash, these parts being all of the ordinary construction, and not claimed, broadly, herein.
The body of the fastener consists of a rectangular boX, D,pro'\'ided with the horizontally-arranged outwardly-projeeting flange E and verticallyarranged downwardly-projecting flange F, for securing it to the sash.
Disposed in the body D, and fitted to slide horizontally in the same, there is a bolt, G,

provided with the notches H N. A lever, J, having the dog or projection 00, is also dis posed in the body of the fastener,and provided with a spring, 2, adapted to force the lever into engagement with the bolt. The lever is provided with an aperture, or is cut out on its side adjacent to the bolt, as shown. at n,and is also provided at its front end with a projection, r, and at its rear end with a projection, t, these projections being slightly shorter than the proj eetion ac, and disposed on the same side of the lever,with their ends restingagainst the side of the bolt. That side of the lever which is farthest from the bolt is curved or rounded laterally, as shown at t, and the spring is preferably so constructed and arranged as to press it against its center. The notches H N are respectively arranged on opposite sides of the bolt G, which may be reversed to bring either of said notches into position to receive the proj cation :12, and thereby readily adapt the fastener for use at the right or left hand side of the sash or window, as required.
In Fig. 3 the bolt is represented as in position to adapt the fastener for use at the righthand side ofthe window or sash; but by merely reversing it or turning it end for end in the case and partially rotating it to the left the notch N will be brought opposite the projection a and the notch H into the position occupied by the notch N, thereby adapting the fastener for use at the left-hand side of the sash or .window, in a manner which will be readily obvious without a more explicit description. A key-hole, K is formed in the cap of the box D, for the insertion of the key K, the hole being disposed opposite the aperture n in the lever J, and adapted to receive the key K with equal facility whether its flange m is turned toward the front or rear of the case D. A bolt-plate, L, provided with a series of holes, f, is attached to the inner face of the side rail or stile of the upper sash, the holes being adapted to receive the end h of the bolt G.
In the use ofmy improvement thelook is attached to the lower sash by means of screws passed through the flanges E F, and the key inserted,as shown in Fig. l, the end h of the bolt G being inserted in one of the holes f of IOO the strip L, in which position of the parts the sash will be locked. I
WVhen it is desired to unlock the sash, the key is turned to press against the lever J in 5 the aperture 1), thereby compressing the spring 2 and withdrawing the projection 00 from the notch H or N, as the case may be, after which the bolt may be withdrawn or pulled out until the end of said projection rests on the blank or side of the bolt at (l. The sash may then be raised or lowered to the desired point and fastened by turningthe key back into its n0rmal position and pushing the bolt in until the projection 00 is again forced into the notch by the spring 2. The projections t 1' form end pieces,which serve to keep the lever in proper position in respect to the bolt and spring, and prevent the key from swinging or partially revolving it laterally.
It will be obvious that when the end 72. of the bolt is in one of the holes f, the projection w in the notch H or N, and the key withdrawn, both of the sashes B G will be held securely locked, and cannot be moved either up or down without the aid of the key to throw back or withdraw the projection in from the notch in the bolt.
The bed-plate is secured to the ease bya screw, (not shown,) which is inserted in the holes a, and when the key K is in position in the lock to properly actuate the lever J its lower end, w,will rest in one of the holes a- Z in said plate, in accordance with the position of the flange m.
Having thus explained my invention, what 5 I claim is- 1. The improved sash-fastener herein described, the same consisting of the case or body D, provided with the attaching-flanges E F, the bolt G, provided with the notches H N, the lever J, provided with the projections t as r and aperture 1;, the spring 2, and key K, constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. In a SRSh-fElSb6l161,lJh6 combination of the 4 5 following instrumentalities, to wit: a case or body adapted to contain the working parts of the fastener, a bolt arranged to slide horizontally in said case and adapted to be reversed or turned end for end, and also partially rotated, to adapt the fastener for use at either side of the sash, a sliding lever disposedwith in the case and adapted to engage and lock the bolt, a spring disposed within the ease and adapted to force the lever into engagement 5 5 with the bolt, and a key adapted to force the lever out of engagement with the bolt and unlock the fastener, substantially as described.
