FOLDING BEDSTEAD.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,888, dated December 11, 1860.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. SARGENT,

of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State Y of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Folding Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3, a longitudinal and vertical section of it, while it is in an unfolded state. Figs. l and 5 are end elevations of it under like circumstances; Fig. 6 a side view, and Fig. 7 a vertical section of it in a folded state, the latter figure also exhibiting the application of a covering case or chair to it. Fig. 8 is an underside view, and Fig. 9 a vertical section of the said covering case or chair.

I am aware of the folding bedstead described in the United States Patent No. 7712, the frame of such bedstead being composed of a series of posts and folding frames connected and combined together longitudinally and laterally eachof such frames being constructed on the principle of the lazy tongs.

My invention which is an improved folding bedstead having each of its sides and ends, a folding frame constructed on the principle of the lazy tongs, wholly dispenses with the -four posts, as in carrying out or constructing my said bedstead, each of the head and foot frames is arranged in the same plane with two of the bars of the side frames and is jointed thereto and combined therewith by means of slides. Furthermore I have a covering frame or chair, made with a chambered back so opening into the space under the seat and between the legs of the chair as to enable such chair to receive within it and cover the bedstead frame when folded together.

In the drawings A A, B, C, are the four folding frames, or sets of progressive levers, each of such sets being composed of two series of levers or bars a, a, ai, &c., ZJ, Z2, ZJ, &c. The levers or bars of each series are arranged parallel to each other and cross those of the other series in manner as shown in the drawings, a joint pin c being passed through each crossing or intersection of any two levers. rlhe head frame B, is arranged in the same plane with the two correspondthan each of the others or extends above the sacking s, as shown in the drawings, the part so extended being made to receive a slider cZ, so adapted to the bar a, as to be capable of sliding longitudinally on it. The head frame, B, is jointed to the two side frames A, A', at e, c, and is also connected to the two sliders by means of connection bars f, f', arranged as shown in Figs. l and 2, also in Fig. 4, each bar (f, f,) being jointed at its opposite ends both to the frame B and a slider.

In respect to the foot frame C, it is arranged in the same plane with the bars b', Z2', of the side frames and is jointed to such bars at g, g, (see, Fig. 5,) and connected with them at ZL, by sliders or pins c', z', which pass through slots 7c, 7c, formed in plates Z, Z, that project inward respectively from the bars a, ZJ, the whole being as shown in the drawings.

A latch m, applied to each side or end frame, serves when locked on a stud n, projecting from a side frame, to maintain the frame in an extended state. The sacking s may be affixed to the four frames A A', B, C, by means of elastic bands or connections, o, 0, 0.

The covering chair or frame is shown at D, as made in the form of a. common chair, except that the back thereof is constructed with a chamber p, opening into the space below the seat r, and between the four legs s, s. Such chamber p, receives the head frame B, as shown in Fig. 7, when the chair is placed over and upon the bedstead and the latter is in a folded state. When in this latter condition, the bedstead occupies about the same space as a common chair, the sacking being collapsed or folded up with and between the side and end frames. By extending each of the frames lengthwise, the bedstead may be brought into a condition to receive a mattress or bed.

I do not claim a folding bedstead constructed of four posts and frames of progressive levers combined, made and arranged as exhibited in the aforesaid patent.
