(Cl. 132-42) This invention relates generally to coitfure forming devices, and more particularly it pertains to hair curlers. Iai-r curlers of the spool type are in general use. They, however, have certain drawbacks which the present invention overcomes. When small spools are used to set hair, the result is either an excess of curling throughout the coiifure, or if only the free hair ends are treated, the crown is unsatisfactorily straight and lacks wave.

At the other extreme, where large spools are employed the crown receives a satisfactory wave but the ends of the hair are loose and devoid of curl. Consequently, to arrive at a satisfactory combination end curl and wave the process of hairdressing is often a time consuming process.

It is, therefore, a primary object of this invention to provide a coiifure device which simultaneously treats hair ends for tight curls and intermediate hair for loose curls or waves.

Another object of this invention is to provide a coaxial assembly of a slotted spool and a spindle whereby hair can be spooled for treatment for two or more diameters of curl.

These and other objects and attendant advantages of this invention will become more readily apparent and understood from the accompanying specification and single accompanying sheet of drawings in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the head of a person illustrating waves and curls in a hairdress;

FIG. 2 is a side elevation of a spindle for an improved hair curler incorporating features of this invention;

FIG. 3 is a side elevation of a spool for the improved hair curler;

FIG. 4 is a longitudinal section, with some parts shown in elevation, of theimproved hair curler of the present invention; and

FIG. 5 is a cross-section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4 showing hair undergoing treatment in the novel hair curler.

Referring now to the details of the drawings, in FIG. 2 there is shown a rod-like elongated spindle having enlarged tapered ends 11 and 13, extending in opposite directions. The spindle 10 is pierced with a longitudinal extending slot 15, so that hair fluid can pass or freely flow from one side of the spindle to the other.

To the one end 13 of the spindle 10 there is secured an elastic string 16, on the other end of which is fastened a plug 14. A socket 12, dimensioned to fit the plug 14, is located axially in the other end 11 of the spindle 16.

As shown in FIG. 3, there is provided a separate hollow cylindrical spool 18. One side of the spool 18 is cut to provide a longitudinally extending slot 20, which extends from a cut flare 17 at one end nearly to the other end thereof.

FIG. 4 shows how the spindle 10 can be assembled within the spool 18 and held thus, after applying the hair, by means of the elastic string 16 and the socketed plug 14. Also shown is a cylindrical winding space 22 provided between the spindle 10 and the spool 18. Spool 18 and spindle 10 are preferably made from aluminum or plastic.

In use, a pair of very thin retention papers 26 are first placed on the opposite sides of the ends of the dampened hair to be curled, and then the paper and hair is wrapped around the spindle 10, as shown in FIG. 5. Theend of the dampened hair 24 and papers 26 are revolved in spindle it? to wind up a length of hair thereon wit-hin space 22 to form the small diameter end curls illustrated as shown in FIG. 1.

The slotted spool 18 is now slipped over the spindle 1d and the entire assembly of spindle it and spool 18 are revolved to gather hair on the outer surface of the larger diameter spool 18 to form the intermediate curls or long Waves.

The elastic string 16, when tensioned by the plug 14 as previously related, effectively holds the hair from unrolling while the usual setting or neutralizing solutions are applied and as long as necessary to complete the process.

While not shown it is to be understood that the spool 18 may be made more permeable to solutions by the provision of suitable slots or holes. The ends 11 and 13 of the spindle 10 may similarly be perforated, notched or shaped to allow free ingress of hair treating fluid to the interior of the curler assembly.

Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachin gs. it is, therefore, to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention may he prac ticed otherwise than as specifically described.

What is claimed is:

l. A hair curler device, comprising, a spool with 26 central cylindrical opening extending therethrough, and a spindle with a body portion and oppositely extending enlarged tapered ends integrally connected to said body portion coaxially positioned in said opening in said spool, said tapered ends of said spindle constituting bearing surfaces for aligning said spool with said spindle, said spin.- dle having an axially located longitudinally extending slot provided therethrough located intermediate its ends for passage of fluid from side to side of said spindle, said spool having a longitudinally extending slot provided therein and radially located with respect to said opening: extending therethrough and extending from one end: thereof and terminating short of the other end thereof for allowing intermediate portions of the hair to be passed therethrough to the outer surface of said spool, with the body portion of said spindle being spaced from the surface of said central opening in said spool to form an annulus between said spindle and spool, said spindle and spool being co-axially positioned and co-extensive with each other, and detachable elastic means extending between said tapered ends of said spindle for holding said spindle in a coaxial position within said opening in said spool due to the location of said tapered ends of said spindle.

2. A hair curler device as recited in claim 1, wherein said spindle and spool are formed of light weight metal, such as aluminum.

3. A hair curler device as recited in claim 1, wherein said spindle and spool are formed of plastic.

Claims (1)

1. A HAIR CURLER DEVICE, COMPRISING, A SPOOL WITH A CENTRAL CYLINDRICAL OPENING EXTENDING THERETHROUGH, AND A SPINDLE WITH A BODY PORTION AND OPPOSITELY EXTENDING ENLARGED TAPERED ENDS INTEGRALLY CONNECTED TO SAID BODY PORTION COAXIALLY POSITIONED IN SAID OPENING IN SAID SPOOL, SAID TAPERED ENDS OF SAID SPINDLE CONSTITUTING BEARING SURFACES FOR ALIGNING SAID SPOOL WITH SAID SPINDLE, SAID SPINDLE HAVING AN AXIALLY LOCATED LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING SLOT PROVIDED THERETHROUGH LOCATED INTERMEDIATE ITS ENDS FOR PASSAGE OF FLUID FROM SIDE TO SIDE OF SAID SPINDLE, SAID SPOOL HAVING A LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING SLOT PROVIDED THEREIN AND RADIALLY LOCATED WITH RESPECT TO SAID OPENING EXTENDING THERETHROUGH AND EXTENDING FROM ONE END THEREOF AND TERMINATING SHORT OF THE OTHER END THEREOF FOR ALLOWING INTERMEDIATE PORTIONS OF THE HAIR TO BE PASSED THERETHROUGH TO THE OUTER SURFACE OF SAID SPOOL, WITH THE BODY PORTION OF SAID SPINDLE BEING SPACED FROM THE SURFACE OF SAID CENTRAL OPENING IN SAID SPOOL TO FORM AN ANNULUS BETWEEN SAID SPINDLE AND SPOOL, SAID SPINDLE AND SPOOL BEING CO-AXIALLY POSITIONED AND CO-EXTENSIVE WITH EACH OTHER, AND DETACHABLE ELASTIC MEANS EXTENDING BETWEEN SAID TAPERED ENDS OF SAID SPINDLE FOR HOLDING SAID SPINDLE IN A COAXIAL POSITION WITHIN SAID OPENING IN SAID SPOOL DUE TO THE LOCATION OF SAID TAPERED ENDS OF SAID SPINDLE.
