APPARATUS FOR TANNING HIDES.
SPECIFICATION forming pari; of Letters Patent N0. 308,003,6lated November 11, 1884:.
Application tiled August 31, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SPITTA, Sen., a subject of the King of Prussia, in the Empire of Germany, residing at the city of Brandenburgon-the Havel, in said Kingdom of Prussia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Tanning Hides and other purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vats for tanning, dyeing, or bleaching, in which a circulation or agitation of the tanning, dyeing, or bleaching liquor is maintained during the treatment of the hides or fabrics without removing them from the vat.
The object of the invention is to secure a rapid and uniform change or agitation of the liquor throughout the vat.
Figure 1 is a vert-ical transverse section of this apparatus in the form of a double vat. Fig. 2 is partly a plan with the cover removed and partly a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. l, of a portion of a vat forming a part of this apparatus.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
Avat or tank, A, constructed of wood, stone, or other suitable material, is provided at one side with a partition, c, which divides the vat into a tanningcompartment, D, and plungerchamber E. The partition a is recessed at its upper and lower edges, or of less depth than the wall of the tank, whereby passages c c are formed between the tanning-compartment and the plunger-chamber at the top and bottom of the vat. Slats or bars 7L, provided with hooks from which hides are suspended, rest at their ends upon strips or ledges s, -fastened to the walls of the tanning-compartment. A horizontally-elongated plunger, P, adapted to lit and move within the plunger-chamber E, is reciprocated vertically therein by means of a rod, d, and a lever, f, to which said rod is connected. The lever f is pivoted at e to a suitable support or standard, g, and provided with a hook at its outer end adapted to receive a handle.
The tanning or other liquor is supplied to or removed from the vat by means of the pipe m, the lower end of which discharges into the tanning-compartment, the upper end, m', being designed to be connected to the pump.
The operation is as follows:v The hides being suspended in the tanning-compartment upon the hooks of the bar It, and the vat, including the tanning-compartment and plunger-chamber, being lled with tanning-liquor, the movement of the lever f will reciprocate the elongated plunger e, whereby a uniform agitation or circulation of the liquor within the tank will be effected, the downward stroke of the plunger forcing a uniform quantity ot'- liquor through the lower elongated opening, c', in the partition a into the tanning-compartment D throughout its entire length, and drawing an equal quantity of liquor through the elongated opening c at the top of said partition into said plunger-chamber, the upward movement of the plunger producing a current in a direction the reverse of that just described.
It is preferable to construct the apparatus in the form of a double tank, as shown in the drawings, in which the interior of the tank is divided into two tanning-compartments, D D', by means of a central partition, a, said partition being provided with an opening, t, at the bottomof the tank, whereby communicationl between the compartments is established. This opening i may be closed by a slide, t, so that the compartments may be filled with the liquor or emptied independently ofeaeh other. In this case one of the tanningcompartments, as D', may be provided with two sets of hooked bars arranged one above the other, whereby a larger number of hides of-small size may be suspended in the tank. In this case the tank is provided with an additional plunger-chamber, E', having a horizontally-elongated plunger, PQ similar to the plunger P,` heretofore described. The plunger P may be connected by the rod d with the same lever or walkingbeam f with which the plunger is connected. In such arrangement the plunger P moves downward while the plunger P moves upward, and vice versa. In this manner a circulation is maintained within the separate tanning-compartments, and if the slide t be opened there will also be a circulation between said compartments.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, in an apparatus for tanning and other purposes, of a vat provided with a partition dividing said vat into a tanning -eonipartnient and a plunger-chamber, said partition having openings or passages at its top and bottoni for the circulation of the liquor within the Vat, and a horizontally-elon gated vertieally-reeiproeating plunger adapted to lit and move within said plungerehaniber, substantially as deseribed.
2. The combination, in an apparatus for tanning and other purposes, of a vat provided with two tanning-compartments separated by a central partition, and with two plungerehanibers separated from the tanningeenipartinents by means of partitions having openings at their upper and lower edges for the
