LIMING AND OTHER TANNING OPERATIONS'UPON HIDES on sKINs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 8, 1920.
Application filed August 11, 1919. Serial No. 316,920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLEMENT MAon OwnN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Stockton Heath, lVarrington, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Limingand other Tanning Operations Upon Hides or Skins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to the preliminary operation in the tanning of hides or skins of limingin which they are oper ated upon by the known milk of lime liquor in pits or tanks for the primary purpose of loosening the hair and swelling the hide or skin-and other similar operations; and it has primarily for its object and effect to render the action of the liquor upon the hides or skins more uniform and eflective,
to reduce the time occupied in effecting the treatment, and diminish the labor and cost.
The hides or skins are suspended and held separate or apart in the liquor in the pits or tanks, and the liquor is kept in gentle movement, so that the lime, or other ingredient, is kept in suspension in the liquor and distributed, and as the liquor which is acting on the surface of the hides or skins is absorbed by them, it is replenished with fresh and more liquor, with the effects above referred to.
The means for producing vibratory or pulsatory or like movement of the l quld is illustrated in the accompanying drawin gs, in which Figure l is an end elevation of a pit showing the vibratory or pulsatory means within it, while Fig. 2 is a longltudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. i is a detail showing a modified arrangement of vibratory device or means.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, the arrangement shown consists of a multiplicity of double paddles 1, disposed near the bottom of the tank, a number of which are mounted on a plurality of shafts 2 extending across the pit at the bottom, supported in bearings 3 resting on frames l, which are secured to the bottom of the pit.
All the shafts 2 are coupled together by a coupling bar 5, connected by pin joints to arms 6 fixed on the shafts 2; the rod 5 extends along the center of the bottom of the pit, and is reciprocated by a vertical rod 7 extending down into the pit, and suitably mechanically operated from above, it being connected to the bar 5 by the bell crank 8. Thus by reciprocating the bar 7 the shafts 2 are rocked, and the paddles l vibrated. The amount of stroke of the paddles may be about that indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1.
The hides 10 in the case shown are placed in and lifted out of the pits, and suspended in them, on rods 11, placed across the top of the tank or pit, and supported suitably by links or cords 12, which are secured along each side of the tank to pins or the like in any suitable way.
The paddles l are of duplex form, that is one blade is on each side of the axis of their supporting shafts, and they are made preferably of the form shown in Fig. 3,
namely, larger at the blade portions proper, and smaller at the inner arm and boss portions, which may be separate parts from the blades, and the latter attached to them, as indicated by the drawings.
Directly above the shafts 2 there is a partition board 9, fixed in jaws or sockets formed on the upper part of the bearings 3; these serving as a species of guide or controlling means for the movement of the liquor on each side of the shaft; that is the two bodies of liquid acted upon by the paddles, on each side.
In the case shown in Fig. 4:, only two sets of paddles are employed, in which case, the blades proper consist of bars extending between two arms fixed on the shafts 2. This form is more suitable for wide pits or tanks.
By vibrating the paddles through an are such as described say 60 to 90, the ingredicuts in the liquor will be kept in suspension and properly distributed in the liquor, and the required movement of the liquor is produced.
In the case where the invention is applied to liming, for the purpose of dehairing the hides or skins, the effect of the paddles and their movement is to keep the lime in suspension in the liquor, and they tend to draw the disturbed lime upward among the hides, which are suspended in the liquor.
The paddles and gear may in some cases be covered over by a wooden grate, just above them, but generally, such a grating is not necessary.
With regard to the rate of movement of 1. A tank vat forliming hides vor skins, 7
having a plurality of sets of paddles arranged in the lower portion thereof, the paddles of each set being alined,a shaft supporting the'paddles of each set, means for simultaneously and similarly operating all of said shafts to reciprocate the paddles, and means having a fixed relation to each shaft to direct the liquid disturbed by the paddles upwardly in the vat.
2. Atank vat for liming hides or skins,
having a series shafts mounted in the bot shafts to simultaneously and similarly reciprocate all of said paddles, and partitions arranged above and in line with the respective shafts to direct the liquid disturbed by the paddles in the upward direction.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin iwitnesses.
OTJEMENT MACE OWEN.
