G. J. DOUGLAS GULTIVATOR. No. 307,923. Patented Nov. 11, 1884..
N PETERS. Fhnkn-Lifllognphar. Washinginn. D. C.
AENT Three;
GEORGE J. DOUGLAS, OF ABLEMAN, WISCONSIN.
CU LTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,923, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed June 3, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ableman, in the county of Sank and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this improvement is an adjustable attachment to sulky-cultivators for use in marking plant-rows. This result is obtained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view more fully illustrating the construction of the parts.
Referring to Fig. l, the adjustable attachment is represented outside of the sulkywheels for the purpose of better, showing the features thereof.
A, A, A, and B represent the ordinary cultivator-wheels, frame-tongue, and axle.
O is a transverse beam affixed to the cultivatorframe, and provided with perpendicular extensions 0. v
D D represent dragbars suitably connected to the extensions 0, and provided at their rear ends with vertical arcs D, slotted as shown at D, and lapping each other for connection by one or more bolts, substantially as shown. The drag-bars D and arcs D may be made in tegral, or in parts bolted or riveted together, as shown at d.
F F represent wings or lateral extensions of the drag-bars D, to which their inner ends are hinged, as shown at F. The outer ends of the lateral extensions F are provided with slots for the reception of bolts for securing the positions of the cultivator-shovels G,
which, by means of the slots F, may be set in or out on the wings F, thereby adapting the mechanism for marking the plant-rows at dif ferent distances, as may be desired. The drag-bars D, when made integral with the are D, or the latter part, when made separate from the drag-bar D, is provided with a suitably-threaded project-ion or recess for affixing the cultivator-shovels G in position by nut or bolt, as shown at cl.
E is a braeerod rigidly securedto the wings F, as shown at d, and flexibly connected to the drag-bar D through eyebolt (l, as shown at E, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
H H represent levers made integral with or affixed to the wings F. The cultivator-shovels are reversed, as shown, for use in marking the rows, as'in this position they will pulverize the soil better than if set in the ordinary way and mark the rows equallyas well. The drivers seat projects rearward from the sulkyaxle, to which it is attached, sufficiently to bring the driver immediately between the levers H, attached to the wings F. By means of the slotted arcs of the drag-bars the intermediate shovels may bebrought nearer together, and as the shovels G may be moved inwardly, all the shovels may be set at an equal distance apart, and any desired space made between the plant-rows. The braces E will hold the wings F against the draft and move in the eyebolts (1 when necessary to elevate the wings F for the purpose of turning, or clearing stumps, rocks, or other obstructions in the course of the sulky or wings. The perpendicular ex tensions O of the transverse beam 0 may be connected to the ends of the extensions 0 by vertical pivots; or the beam 0 may be provided with slots and the extensions 0 made adjustable therein. Suitable mechanism may be provided for grasping the levers H when moved inwardly and holding the wings in elevation. without further attention from the driver. By removing the wings F and braces E and connecting the shovels G to the dragbars D in the ordinary way the same may be used as an ordinary cultivator.
Having explained the construction and operation of my improvement, what I, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The drag-bars D, having slotted arcs D, in combination with the wings F, substantially as specified for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination. in a cultivator, of a supporting-frame suitably mounted, drag-bars D, secured at their forward ends and extending rearwardly, arcs D, located transversely at the rear ends of said bars and overlapping each other at their inner ends and slotted at In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in I such overlapping portions, a securing-bolt 10- presence of two witnesses. cated in said slots, wings F, pivotully secured to said arcs and slotted at or near their outer GEORGE DOUGLAS ends, operating levers I-I, inner shovels, G, Witnesses: and shovels G, adjustably secured on said O. S. HIToHoooK,
wing-slots, substantially as set forth. J. D. BARNEs.
