eiPBCIPICAIION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,067, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed June 16, 1898. Serial No. 277,331. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J osnrrr H. Fosrnn and JEREMIAH H. KIMBRO, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in plows, having for its object the provision of simple and highly-efficient means for adjusting the position of the outer dragbars and shovels and for regulat ing the depth of penetration of the central shovel.
The invention also comprises means for constituting a gang-plow, the gage or draft of the side drag-bars being readily and easily changed as desired.
The invention therefore comprises the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, snbstantiallyashereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our improved plow with a portion of one handle broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is acentral longitudinal sectional view on the line a: as, Fig. 2. Fig. at is a view showing the central drag-bar moved forward. Figs. 5 and 6 are details views.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the plow-beam,in the rear central portion of which is formed a longitudinal slot or opening, a, and to this beam are connected the forward convergent ends of the plow-handles c,which are supported by bracebars c attached to said beam, as shown.
B is an approximatelytriangular plate secured to the under side of the beam A by means of a nutted bolt, 2), passed therethrough. In this plate are formed holes or apertures b, as shown.
Gis a central drag-bar, carrying atitslower rear end a shovel, d, and through the forward end of this drag-bar is passed a rod or bolt, d, provided with upper and lower nuts, d (P, whereby the forward end of said drag-bar can be adjusted and secured at the desired point.
This central drag bar, C, is pivotally supported near its center by two apertured bars or plates, D, the lower ends of which are connected to the sides of said drag-bar by a cr0sspin, e, and said bars or plates are provided with coincident apertures 6', through which-a horizontal aperture in the beam A-a second cross pin or bolt, c is passed. By this means the rear end of the central drag-bar can be raised or lowered, as desired, and by the nutted rod the front end of said drag-bar can be adjusted according to the depth of penetration it is desired the shovel of this drag-bar should have.
E Eare the side divergent drag'barssecured at their forward ends by nutted bolts passed through the desired one of the holes B of the plate B, the side draft of said dragbars being regulated by securing the ends of said dragbars in the desired one of these holes. To these drag-bars are secured the outer ends of arms F F by bolts ff, having lower hooked ends. The inner apertured ends of these arms F overlap and are secured by a nutted bolt, f, passed upwardly therethrough, and after being projected through the longitudinal slot at of the beam Aand through an aperture of the clamp-plate f the same is fitted with a. nut, 7, as shown. This clamp-plate f has rightangular side flanges which hug the sides of the beam A, and said plate is designed to fit over the slot a of said beam. By loosening the nu tted bolt f the arms F F can be moved in the desired direction and the outer dragbars adjusted and secured at any point, according to the width of the furrow or extent of the straddle it is desired to obtain.
If it is desirable to dispense with the central drag-bar, the same is readily accomplished by removing the nutted bolts and clamp-plates securing the same. Vvhen it is desired to form a gang-plow and to place all the shovels on an approximately straight line, the nutted bolts 1) d are transposed and the front end of the central drag-bar is secured at the front of the plate B. (See Fig. i.) The bars or plates 1) are consequently moved forward and the crosspin 6 is passed through a second forward horizontal aperture, g, in the beam A, as shown in said figure.
From the foregoing description it will be ICO seen that we have produced a new and improved plow comprising simple and efficient means for regulating the depth of penetration of the central drag-bar shovel and for regulating the draft and gage of the outer divergent drag-bars.
We claim as our invention 1. As an improvement in plows, the beam having the longitudinal slot, the central dragbar vertically adjustable, the side divergent drag-bars pivotally secured at their forward ends, the arms having overlapping ends, the
nutted rod or bolt, and the clamp-plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the beam having the slot and the apertured plate secured to the under side thereof, and the central drag-bar adjustably secured thereto, of the side dragbars secured at their forward ends by bolts passed through said plate, the arms secured to said drag-bars by bolts, the nutted rod or bolt, 1
