(Cl. 140109) This invention relates to a device for screening frames, and more particularly concerns a device for assembling grooved screen frames, with screening material and splines for retaining the screening material within the frame grooves.
In the manufacture of screen windows, screen doors or other screen enclosures, highly skilled labor has been used to perform the necessary successive operations of hand rolling the screen cloth into the grooves of the frame and then forcing the retaining spline into place. Such operations necessarily result in relatively high pro duction costs, and the quality of the finished product varies with the relative skill of the worker.
Accordingly, one object of the invention is to provide an improved device adapted to perform a series of operations in predetermined sequence, whereby screen cloth is rolled into the groove of a frame while the cloth is tensioned and spline material is continuously fed and located to retain the cloth in said frame groove.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved serial arrangement of rollers for a screen assembly device wherein each roller performs an independent operation, the rollers operating in a continuously successive manner.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device including a compact roller assembly for successively (l) tensioning screen cloth to a taut condition over a grooved frame element, (2) pressing the cloth into the frame groove, and (3) feeding and inserting a spline to retain the cloth in the grooved frame element, the assembly being selectively movable between operative and inoperative positions.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the device embodying the invention is generally indicated at it The same is adapted to be associated with a table top T which carries the usual rectangular screen frame S; for applying screen cloth C thereto. The screen frame S includes elongated elements B with the conventional screen cloth receiving groove G. Elements B may be extrusions of metal or rigid plastic and of desired cross-section.
Table top T is provided with a guide bar 11 secured along an edge thereof, frame element B abutting said bar 11. Screen cloth C is unrolled over the frame S from a roll and roll support, not shown. Means is provided for mounting device for longitudinal movement along the edge of table top T to assemble said screen cloth with .said frame.
To this end an elongated guide rail 12 of right angle section has its horizontal portion 13 secured to the underside of table top T, leaving its vertical portion 14 in depending, aligned relation With table edge 15. A second elongated guide rail 16, also of right angle section, is ar- 2 ranged with its vertical portion '17 in slightly spaced opposed relation to member portion lid.
Rails 12 and 16 are held in spaced relation by suitable means not shown; with the horizontal portion 18 of member 16 elevated somewhat above portion 13 of member 12..
Device it) comprises an angular frame generally indicated at 19; the same comprising a vertical wall 24) whose lower end passes between guide rails 12 and lo; and a horizontal wall 21 which overlies table top T. A pair of longitudinally spaced lower guide rollers 22 are mounted on suitable spindles 23, projecting from the inner surface of the lower end of frame wall 20, said rollers 22 travelling along guide rail 12. Similarly, a pair of longitudinally spaced upper guide rollers 24 are mounted on spindles 25' projecting from the outer surface of frame Wall 20, rollers 24 bearin on the portion 18 of guide rail 16. Thus, the device iii may be moved along the edge 15 of table top T with frame 19 in true upright position.
On horizontal frame wall 21 there is mounted a roller assembly comprising in longitudinally spaced successive relation, a screen tensioning roller 26, a screen grooving roller 27 and a spline roller 23. The rollers 26, 27 and 28 are arranged for independent resiliently biased movement toward table top T by means of vertical spindles 29, 3t) and 31 respectively, which slidably pass through tubular bearing sleeves 32, 33 and 34 respectively. The sleeves 32-34 include upper end portions which are of reduced outer diameter and threaded, the same passing through openings in frame wall 21 and secured in place by jam nuts 35.
The spindles 29, 30 and 31 have their lower ends threaded into openings in yoke members 36 which rotatably carry the rollers 26, 27 and 28. The upper ends of said spindles 29, 3t? and 311 project above their sleeves 32, 33 and 34 and extend through a lift plate 37 overlying frame wall 21. Nuts 38 on the threaded upper ends of spindles 29, 3t and 31 fix the same on lift plate 37. Helical compression springs 39 are disposed about bearing sleeves 32, 33 and 34 with their upper ends abutting the underside of frame wall 21. The lower end of springs 39 abut adjustment nuts 4th threaded on a threaded portion of spindles 2%, 3i) and 31. Lock nuts 41 secure the spindles 29, 3t) and 31 to said yoke members 36.
Rollers 2-7 and 23 are in longitudinal alignment and are kept parallel to frame portion 20 by guide blocks 42 secured to the inner face of frame portion 26, the outer vertical surfaces of said blocks abutting the yoke members 36 carrying rollers 27 and 28.
Roller 26 is angled with respect to rollers 2'7 and 28 and is held in such angled position by a guide block 43, also extending from frame portion 20, but having a slanted outer vertical surface 44 abutting the yoke members 36 carrying said roller 26.
The entire roller assembly carried by frame 19 may be moved vertically between a lower operative position and an upper inoperative position by means of a pair of horizontally disposed cam rollers 45, eccentrically mounted on brackets as and 47 fixed to frame Wall 21 and up standing therefrom. Rollers 4-5 are carried in shafts 48 journalled on brackets 46 and 47, said shafts 48 including right angle handle portions 49 disposed outwardly of frame wall 20. As cam rollers 45 bear against the underside of lift plate 37, it will be apparent that handles 49 may be turned to raise or lower the roller assembly as a unit.
Means for feeding spline material SM to roller 28 is provided, the same comprising a tubular member 5% in angle form. Member 5d passes through a bracket 51 secured to frame 19, said member 59 having a flared inlet 3 portion 52. The member 5b includes downwardly directed portion 53 whose terminal end is disposed immediately adjacent a peripheral portion of spline roller 23. The tubular portion 53 is held in place by a strap member 54 affixed to a bracket 55 secured to frame portion 2i An upstanding handle as is affixed to lift plate 37, to provide means for moving the device it) along guide rails 12 and 16.
It will be apparent, that with a screen frame S on table top T, with its ele rent B in abutting relation to guide bar 11, the roller assembly may be raised to its inoperative position by swinging handles 4-9 to their upper positions, as indicated in solid lines in FIGURE 2. The screen cloth C is spread over frame S, in the usual manner. The handles 49 are then turned to their downward position, as indicated in HGURE 3, causing the roller assembly to move downwardly to its operative position. The nuts 40 may be adjusted to regulate the downward pressure of the individual rollers 26-4428.
Upon moving the device from left to right, as indicated by the arrow in FIGURE 1, roller as is operative to tension the screen cloth C smoothly by reason of its angled position, thus keeping the cloth in a taut condition.
Roller 27 is effective to continuously groove the edge portion of cloth C and to locate the same in groove G in screen element B. Also, spline material SM, which may take the usual form of a synthetic resin strip, is fed through feed members 5% and 53 and pressed into place in groove G by roller 23, thereby retaining the screen cloth C in place on screen frame S.
It will be apparent, that with device it), the screen cloth C may be rapidly assembled with screen frame S,
the serial operations being smoothly and rapidly efiected, as the device is moved by handle as along guide rails 12 and 16.
As various changes might be made in the embodiment of the invention herein shown without departing from the spirit thereof, it is understood that all matters herein shown or described shall be deemed illustrative and not limiting except as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for applying screening to a grooved frame supported on a table, comprising a roller assembly including in successive longitudinal, serial relation a screen tensioning roller, 21 screen grooving roller, and a spline applying roller; and spline feeding means disposed between said grooving and spline applying rollers; a frame member carrying said rollers and feeding means for simultaneous operation and means for guiding the movement of said frame member along said table to continuously and successively spread the screen in a taut condition, groove and press the screening into the grooved portion of said grooved frame and press spline material into said frame groove.
2, A device as in claim 1 wherein said roller assembly is mounted on said frame member for vertical movement between a lower operative position and an upper inoper-ative position, and means on said frame member engageable with said assembly for moving said assembly to said positions thereof.
3. A device as in claim 1 wherein said roller assembly further includes means for resiliently biasing each of said rollers toward said table.
4. A device for applying screening to a screen frame having grooved peripheral portions and supported on a table, comprising in combination, a right angle frame comprising a vertical wall and a horizontal wall extending from one end of said vertical wall guide roller means on opposite sides of said vertical Wall at the other end thereof for engaging edge portions of said table, a plurality of longitudinally spaced spindles vertically mounted on the horizontal frame wall and depending therefrom, a screen tensioning roller mounted on one spindle for spreading screening over said screen frame, a spline roller mounted on a second spindle and a screen grooving d roller mounted on a spindle between said first and second spindles for pressing peripheral portions of said spread screening into the grooved portions of said screen frame.
5. A combination as in claim 4, and further including means for slidably mounting said spindles on said hori zontal wall and means for resiliently biasing said spindles in a downward direction.
6. A combination as in claim 4, and further including tubular spline guiding means on said frame, said spline guiding means having a terminal portion located between said spline roller and said grooving roller and adjacent the periphery of said spline roller.

A device for applying screening to a screen frame having grooved peripheral portions and supported on a table, comprising in combination, an angle frame member having vertical and horizontal walls, guide roller means on the lower edge of said vertical frame wall for engaging an edge of saidtable, a roller assembly mounted on and beneath said horizontal wall and including a plurality of rollers rotatable about horizontal axes parallel to said horizontal wall, a first and second of said rollers being disposed in longitudinal alignment and relatively close to said vertical wall, a third roller being located in a position further removed from said vertical wall, said third roller being rotatable about an axis in angled relation to the axes of said first and second rollers for tensioning said screening over said screen frame, said second roller being operative to press peripheral portions of said tensioned screening into the grooved portions of said screen frame, and said first roller being operative to apply spline material to retain said screening in the grooved portion of said screen frame.
8; A device for applying screening to a screen frame having grooved peripheral portions and supported on a table, comprising in combination, a frame member, roller means on said frame member for guiding said frame member along edge portions of said table, a roller assembly carried by said frame, said roller assembly including a plurality of longitudinally spaced rollers arranged for simultaneous rotation about the horizontal axis thereof, one of said rollers being operative for tensioning said screening over said screen frame, a second of said rollers adjacent said first roller for pressing portions of said screening into the groove of said screen frame, and the third of said rollers adjacent said second roller for applying spline material to retain said screening in the grooved portion of said screen frame, means for independently and resiliently mounting each of said rollers on said frame for movement towards said screen frame, and means for raising and lowering said roller assembly relative to said frame member.

In combination with a fiat supporting surface carrying a grooved screen frame, a device movable along an edge of said supporting surface for forcing screening material into the frame groove, said device comprising a frame, guide roller means on said frame engageable with an edge portion of said supporting surface for guiding the movement of the frame relative to said surface, a roller assembly mounted on said frame, said roller assembly comprising in longitudinal, serial succession a screen tensioning roller, a screen grooving roller and a spline applying roller, each of said rollers being rotatable about a horizontal axis, means for independently and resiliently mounting each of said last mentioned rollers on said frame for biased movement toward said screen frame, means on said frame for feeding spline between said grooving and spline applying rollers to a point adjacent the periphery of said spline applying roller, and means for positioning said tensioning roller in angled relation to the path of movement of said device.

A combination as in claim 9. wherein said frame includes a horizontal wall and further including means for mounting said roller assembly for movement relative to said frame, said last mentioned means comprising a movable horizontal lift plate disposed in opposed relation to said horizontal wall of the frame, means for securing each of said rollers to said lift plate and means for raising and lowering said lift plate relative to said frame wall.
11. A combination as in claim 9 wherein said last mentioned means comprises a guide block secured to said frame, said guide block including an angled abutment surface for positioning engagement with said tensioning roller.

Claims (1)

1. A DEVICE FOR APPLYING SCREENING TO A GROOVED FRAME SUPPORTED ON A TABLE, COMPRISING A ROLLER ASSEMBLY INCLUDING IN SUCCESSIVE LONGITUDINAL, SERIAL RELATION A SCREEN TENSIONING ROLLER, A SCREEN GROOVING ROLLER, AND A SPLINE APPLYING ROLLER; AND SPLINE FEEDING MEANS DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID GROOVING AND SPLINE APPLYING ROLLERS; A FRAME MEMBER CARRYING SAID ROLLERS AND FEEDING MEANS FOR SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION AND MEANS FOR GUIDING THE MOVEMENT OF SAID FRAME MEMBER ALONG SAID TABLE TO CONTINUOUSLY AND SUCCESSIVELY SPREAD THE SCREEN IN A TAUT CONDITION, GROOVE AND PRESS THE SCREENING INTO THE GROOVED PORTION OF SAID GROOVED FRAME AND PRESS SPLINE MATERIAL INTO SAID FRAME GROOVE.
