((33. 42-86) This invention relates to means for removably securing a bayonet or other additional element to a rifle, comprising at least one spring loaded bolt mounted at one of the parts to be secured to each other and engaging a recess in the other of said parts.
With the usual bayonet securing means of this kind the bolt is mounted in the handle of the bayonet and the recess is provided in a T-shaped projection on the rifle, said projection being adapted to enter a T-shaped groove of the bayonet. With said arrangement the axial width of the recess corresponds to that of the bolt, so that the bolt locks the bayonet against axial displacement. Said known bayonet securing means suffer the drawback that the accuracy of hitting when firing the rifle is unfavourably influenced by the bayonet mounted on the rifle as the diagram of hits of such a rifle diflers from that of the rifle without bayonet.
The invention has for its object to improve the accuracy of hitting with a rifle having a bayonet mounted thereon. To this end the foremost portion of the bottom of the recess for the bolt or the bolt itself at its end cooperating with said bottom according to the invention is provided with a plane inclined upwards towards the front and the recess having a larger width in longitudinal direction than the bolt in such a manner that the bayonet or the like is adapted to move forwards with respect to the rifle. With said arrangement the bayonet will remain behind during the return shock of the rifle when firing the shot, so that the bayonet can not have an unfavourable influence on the accuracy of hitting with the rifle.
The means for securing the bayonet according to the invention also presents the advantage that they may be obtained with an existing bayonet by only modifying the recess in the connecting element on the rifle for the bayonet to some extent.
The invention will be further described with reference to the drawing illustrating an embodiment of the device according to the invention.

A bayonet 2 is connected to the barrel 1 of the rifle by means of a supporting plate 3 rigidly secured to the bayonet and by a T-shaped groove 4 at the end of the ice 2 handle of the bayonet engaging a T-shape projections at the barrel of the rifle. V
Abolt 6 is mounted in the end of thehandle and locks the bayonet in longitudinal direction as said bolt engages a recess 7 in the T-shaped projection 5 at the barrel of the rifle. The bolt 6 is rigidly secured on a pin 8 loaded by a spring 9. When the pin 8 is depressed against the pressure of spring 9, that is to the right in FIG. 3 the axial locking of the bayonet is released and the bayonet may be removed from the barrel of the rifle.
The bolt 6 is provided with an inclined ramp 16 whereby the bayonet may be placed on the barrel without depressing the pin 8. The projection 5 on the barrel of the rifle is provided with an abutment i1 limiting the movement of the bayonet at the rear when sliding said latter onto the barrel.
From FIG. 4 appears that the recess 7 of the device according to the invention is provided with an inclined bottom portion 12 and that the longitudinal width of said recess exceeds that of the bolt 6. With the embodiment shown an abutment face 13 at the foremost end of the inclined bottom portion 12 of the recess 7' prevents the bayonet from being removed from the barrel of the rifle without the bolt 6 having been withdrawn out of the recess. The bayonet will normally be held in its rearmost position determined by the abutment 11 under the action of spring 9. When firing the shot the bayonet during the return shock of the rifle will remain behind as the resilient bolt 6 is adapted to ascend on the inclined bottom portion 12 of the recess '7, so that the bayonet will not exert an unfavourable influence on the accuracy of hitting with the rifle.
When comparing FIG. 4 with FIG. 5 showing a known bayonet securing device it appears that only a slight modification is required for performing the invention. The construction of the bolt 5 is exactly the same, so that the usual bayonets do not require any modification. The only difference resides in the shape of the locking recess 7. With the known construction the recess 7' is a rectangular groove having a flat bottom and an abutment face 12', whereas the longitudinal width of said groove substantially corresponds to that of the bolt 6.
The device according to the invention has been described with reference to means for securing a bayonet on a rifle but it will be clear that said device may also be used for securing each other element on a rifle, such as an auxiliary sight.
What I claim is:
1. Means for removably securing a bayonet-like member to a rifle, comprising a spring loaded bolt mounted on one of said rifle and member, a recess in the other of said rifle and member, said bolt extending transversely of the rifle into said recess and urged by the spring toward the bottom of the recess, said recess being longer longitudinally of the rifle than the bolt portion engaged therein, and at least one of the said bolt and recess being provided at their bottom cooperating surfaces with a portion outwardly inclined toward the front of the rifle so that the bayonet member is clamped by engagement of said bolt and recess but upon firing of the rifle moves forwardly with respect to the recoiling rifle.
2. Means for removably securing a bayonet-like memher to a rifle, comprising a spring loaded bolt mounted on one of said rifle and member, a recess in the other of said rifle and member, said bolt extending transversely of the rifle into said recess and urged by the spring toward the bottom of the recess, said recess being longer longitudinaliy of the rifle than the bolt portion engaged therein, and the foremost portion of the bottom of said recess being outwardly inclined towards the front of the rifle so that the bayonet member is clamped by engagement of said bolt and recess but upon firing of the rifle moves forwardly with respect to the recoiling rifle.
3. Means for removably securing a bayonet-like memher to a rifle, comprising a spring loaded bolt mounted on one of said rifle and member, a recess in the other of said rifle and member, said bolt extending transversely of the rifle into said recess and urged by the spring toward the bottom of the recess, said recess being longerlongitudinally of the rifle than the bolt portion engaged therein, and said bolt at its end cooperating with the bottom of said recess being provided with an outwardly inclined portion toward the front of the rifle so that the bayonet member is clamped by engagement of said bolt and recess but upon firing of the rifle moves forwardly with respect to the recoiling rifle.

Claims (1)
1. MEANS FOR REMOVABLY SECURING A BAYONET-LIKE MEMBER TO A RIFLE, COMPRISING A SPRING LOADED BOLT MOUNTED ON ONE OF SAID RIFLE AND MEMBER, A RECESS IN THE OTHER OF SAID RIFLE AND MEMBER, SAID BOLT EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF THE RIFLE INTO SAID RECESS AND URGED BY THE SPRING TOWARD THE BOTTOM OF THE RECESS, SAID RECESS BEING LONGER LONGITUDINALLY OF THE RIFLE THAN THE BOLT PORTION ENGAGED THEREIN, AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE SAID BOLT AND RECESS BEING PROVIDED AT THEIR BOTTOM COOPERATING SURFACES WITH A PORTION OUTWARDLY INCLINED TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE RIFLE SO THAT THE BAYONET MEMBER IS CLAMPED BY ENGAGEMENT OF SAID BOLT AND RECESS BUT UPON FIRING OF THE RIFLE MOVES FORWARDLY WITH RESPECT TO THE RECOILING RIFLE.
