SHIELDS OUTSIDE LAP GLUE UNIT Filed Feb. 15, 1959 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 rates Patented Dec. 18, 1962 3,068,837 QUTSIDE LAP GLUE UNIT Albert F. Shields, Forest Hills, N.Y., assignor to S & S Corrugated Paper Machinery Co., Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Feb. 13, 1959, Ser. No. 793,065 12 Claims. (Cl. 118-249) The instant invention relates to automatic corrugated box machinery and more particularly to a gluing unit, which forms part of the folding and gluing section of the machine, for applying a film of glue to box flaps which will be positioned externally of the folded tubular box produced by the automatic machine.
In high speed automatic machines for producing corrugated boxes, box blanks are fed into the machine which first applies glue to a longitudinally extending flap and thereafter automatically folds the outside panels, one of which includes the flap, so that the glued flap is cemented to the other folded panel and in this way a folded tubular box is formed. Whether the glue flap is positioned internally or externally of the box is a matter dictated by the particular box application. It is suflicient for the purpose of this application to say that a good many applications require that the glue flap be positioned externally of the box.
In order to produce a box with an outside glue flap, when utilizing an automatic high speed folding gluing machine, it is desirable to apply glue to the flap before the side panels are folded. Since the box blanks pass horizontally through the machine and the initial side panel folds are applied by moving these panels upwardly, this means that glue must be applied to the top side of the unfolded blank. In order to accomplish this operation the glue flap must pass below suitable glue applying means.
This leads to many problems in that gravity interferes with the control of the film thickness and it is diflicult to control the quantity of glue transferred from the glue reservoir to the glue applying means. The device of the instant invention solves these problems by providing a glue applying roll rotatable on a horizontal axis positioned above the feed path of the blank with the periphery of the glue roll being located substantially at the feed path so that the blank passes below the glue roll. Glue is pumped from a glue reservoir to a spreading nozzle which is positioned above the glue roll so that glue leaving the nozzle falls upon the periphery of the glue roll. The glue roll is rotating in such a direction that the glue, after contacting the glue roll, is carried toward a doctor roll which controls the thickness of the glue film which remains on the peripheral edge of the glue roll and thereby controls the thickness of the glue film which will be applied to the flap of the box.
Of necessity, the quantity of glue which is fed to the glue roll from the glue reservoir exceeds the amount of glue required to form the film thickness. Thus, there is an excess quantity of glue which must be handled in such a manner that it does not interfere with the operation of the glue unit. This is accomplished by providing a novel deflecting means which directs the excess glue through an outlet which is connected back to the glue reservoir.
The deflecting means comprises a pair of plates which are positioned on opposite sides of the glue roll and partially overlap the doctor and glue roll so as to enclose the region at which the glue roll and doctor roll are closest together. The upper surfaces of the plates are each beveled with each of the bevels extending upwardly away from the glue roll. Because of the high speed of the glue roll, as well as the shape of the bevels, the excess glue will bridge across the periphery of the glue roll being directed away from the sides of the glue roll and through the overflow outlet. Thus, the excess glue will not drip down the sides of the glue roll from where it can be thrown upon random areas of the box blanks to thereby result in the production of imperfect folded tubular boxes.
Accordingly, a primary object of the instant invention is to provide a novel glue means for applying glue to a box flap which will be positioned externally of the box.
Another object is to provide an outside lap glue unit which includes novel means for deflecting the excess glue which is fed to the glue roll.
Still another object is to provide novel glue deflecting means for an outside lap glue unit with the glue deflecting means comprising a pair of plates positioned on opposite sides of the glue roll with each of the plates having their upper edges beveled so as to be inclined upwardly away from the glue roll.
These as well as other objects of the instant invention shall become readily apparent after reading the following description of the accompanying drawings in which:

Now referring to the figures, the outside glue lap unit of the instant invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 10, is constructed to be mounted to one of the outside carriers 11 of an automatic box machine 12. A machine of this type is described in my copending US. application Serial No. 682,4 fi ed septembfir 1957. and entitled Power Driven Adjusting Means for Slitting, Slotting, Scoring and Creasing Means, and which has matured to Patent No. 2,982,189, granted May 2, 1961.
Very briefly, machine 12 includes a sheet folding station 13 to which a stack of sheets 14 is delivered with each sheet 14 having score lines 15 parallel to the leading edge thereof. The sheets 14 are fed one at a time from the bottom of the stack through a blank cutting section 16 Where the sheets 14 are slit, scored, slotted and crushed, emerging from cutting section 16 as unfolded box blanks 17 (FIGURE 9A) each having a glue flap 18.
Box blank 17 then passes through glue unit 10 where, as will be hereinafter described, a film of glue is applied to the top surface of flap 18. Thereafter, box blank 17 passes through folding section 19, including moving belts 20 which fold over the outside panels 21, 22 of blank 17 about their respective score lines 23, 24,-with glue flap 18 overlying outside panel 21 thereby producing tubular box 25 (FIGURE 9B). into delivery section 26 where folded boxes 25 are accumlated so as to form stack 27, the top 28 of which is periodically removed by pusher plate 29 as described in my aforesaid copending application 682,443.
The position of carrier 11 is adjustable transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of automatic machine 12 and this adjustment of carrier 11 is made in accordance with the size of the box required. Glue unit 10 is fixedly secured to carrier 11 by fastening means 30 so that glue unit 10 moves transversely in unison with carrier 11 and in this manner glue unit 10 applies glue to only glue flap 18.
Outside lap glue unit 10 comprises frame plate 31 which is secured by fastening means 30 to carrier 11 so that once carrier 11 is-locked in position it can be said that frame plate 31 is a stationary member. Glue roll 32 is keyed to horizontal shaft 33 which is journaled for rotation in suitable bearings secured in frame plate 31. Sprocket 34 is also keyed to shaft 33 and is engaged by chain 35 which also passes around idler sprocket 36 as well as drive sprocket 37. Drive sprocket 37 is freely mounted on drive shaft 38. Motor 101 having sprocket 1G2 keyed to the output shaft thereof, rotates shaft 38 by means of chain 103 and sprocket 104 keyed to shaft 38. Clutch member 39 is keyed to drive shaft 38 and is disposed within a circular cutout of drive sprocket 37. Clutch pin 40'mounted to clutch member 39 is selectively enterable into an appropriately positioned opening in drive sprocket 37, and when positioned in this opening forms a driving connection between clutch member 39 and drive sprocket 37. In this manner the rotation of drive shaft 38 is transmitted to glue roll 32 so as to cause rotation thereof in the direction of arrow A.
Doctor roll 41 is freely mounted upon the eccentric portion 42 of stub shaft 43. That is, shaft portion 42 is not in axial alignment with the main portion 44 of stub shaft 43. Main portion 44 extends through journal opening 45 of frame plate 31 and into a journal opening 54a of cover 54. One end 46 of adjusting rod 47 is keyed to stub shaft 43 and establishes the angular position of stub shaft 43.
. Adjusting rod 47 extends through a slot 48 formed by member 49, which is fixedly secured to frame plate 31, and clamp 50, which is hinged at 51 to member 49. Clamp screw 52 passes through a clearance opening at the lower end of clamp member and is threadably engaged with the threads of an opening in member 49. By moving clamp screw 52 to the left with respect to FIG- URE 3 clamp 50 is loosened so that the position of adjusting rod 47 may be altered. Thereafter clamp screw 52 is moved to the right forcing clamp 50 against adjusting rod 47 to secure it in position. A change in position of adjusting rod 47 adjusts the distance between doctor roll 41 and glue roll 32 so as to control the thickness of the glue film applied by glue roll 32 to flap 18 of box blank 17. The doctoring region, or the region where doctor roll 41 and glue roll 32 are most closely associated is enclosed on one side by frame plate 31 and on the other side by cover 54, which is removably secured along its transversely projecting ledge 55 to frame plate 31.
Pump 56 draws glue from glue reservoir 57 through conduit 58 which is joined to vertical tube 61 extending through frame plate projection 55. The lower end of tube 61 is provided with a spreader in the form of nozzle 59 which is positioned in close proximity to the peripheral edge 60 of glue roll 32. Nozzle 59 is provided with an elongated opening 62 so that glue issuing therefrom will be spread across the entire width of peripheral edge 69.
The quantity of glue which issues from nozzle 59 is The folded tubular boxes 25 are fed is an excess amount of glue which is determined by the spacing between doctor roll 41 and glue roll 32. This excess glue, as will be hereinafter described, is directed through a glue outlet opening 63 of frame plate 31, thence through cover adapter 64 and, by means of gravity, flows through inclined conduit 65 back to glue reservoir 57.
The excess glue is directed to outlet 63 by a first glue deflecting means 66 and a second glue deflecting means positioned at opposite ends of the nip between rolls 32 and 41. Glue deflecting means 66 is positioned on one side of glue roll 32, being interposed between glue roll 32 and frame plate 31. Glue deflecting means 66 is comprised of a thick cast plate 67, of irregular shape, which is fixedly secured by fastening means 68' to frame member 31 so that item be said that'glue deflecting means 66 is stationary. The upper edge of thick plate 67 is provided with a horizontally extending beveled portion 68 which is adjacent to glue outlet 63, and another beveled portion 69 which is inclined upwardly from beveled section 68 and away from doctor roll 41.
The second glue deflecting means 70 comprises a thick 7 cast plate 71 having aV-shaped notch 72 formed therein.
One of the notch boundaries is substantially vertical and the other notch boundary 74 is beveled. A thin plate 75 is secured by fasteners 75:: to the side of thick plate 71 away from glue roll 32 and is positioned so as to enclose V-shaped notch 72.
Thick plate 71 is secured to cover 54 by adjusting screws 76 Whose free ends are enlarged at 77 so as to be captured in openings 78 of thick plate 71. Screws 76 extend through cover openings 79 and the threaded portion of each screw 76 is provided with an adjusting nut 80 and knob 81. One end of each compression spring 82, which surrounds screws 76 bears against thick plate 71 while the other end of each spring 82 bears against cover- 54 thereby urging thick plate 71 away from cover 54 toward glue roll 32. Once the distance between thick plate 71 and cover 54 is established by the positions of nuts 80 relative to their associated adjusting screws 76 this position is fixed by moving set screws 83 until they abut plate 71 and thereafter locking screws 83 in position by lock nuts 84. Thus, the posi: tion of second glue deflecting means 70 is adjustable.
It is to be noted that the beveled surfaces 68, 69 and 74 are each inclined upwardly and away from the sides of glue roll 32'. Because of this, excess glue is .drawn away from the sides of glue roll 32 forming a bridge above a portion of the periphery 60 of glue roll 32 from the second deflecting means 70 to glue outlet 63.
Horizontal rails 90, 91 are vertically spaced so as to provide a guideway 89 for end panel 22 so that glue flap 18 passes between glue roll 32 and pressure roll 92. Pressure roll 92 is freely mounted upon bracket 93 which is pivotally mounted at 94 to frame plate 31. Adjusting screw 95, threadably mounted to frame plate extension 96, is connected to bracket 93 with compression spring 97 surrounding screw 95 being interposed between frame plate extension 96 and bracket 93 so as to urge bracket 93 in a clockwise direct ion about pivot 94 and in this manner urging pressure wheel 92 toward" glue roll 32. Set screw 98 threadably engaged with extension 96 is engageable with adjusting screw 95 for maintaining the position thereof. 7 Thus, I have provided an outside lap glue unit 10 which includes novel means for conducting excess glue away from the sides of the glue roll so that the excess glue will not interfere with the operation of the glue unitor be flung to portions of the box blank where it is not Wanted. In this way down time of the automatic machine 12 is kept to a minimum and the number of rejected boxes 25 is also kept to aminimum. Although I have here described preferred embodiment of my novel invention, many variations and modifications will now be apparent to those skilled in the art, and I therefore prefer to be limited, not by the specific disclosure herein, but only by the appending claims.
