To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. ANDREWS, a
citizen of the United'States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Box- Shuck Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the strip-folding devices. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of another folding device. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cutting, gluing, and sanding mechanisms, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional View of the mechanism shown in Fig. 5.

The object of my invention has been to provide a machine for making shucks for match and other boxes which shall comprise improved devices for gluing, scoring, folding, and printing a strip of material, for cutting off the strip into shuck lengths and for sanding such lengths or any of such improved de- Vices; and to such end it consists in the match-box-shuck machine hereinafter specified.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a framework A, consisting of a bed a, supported by end legs a and a and intermediate legs a and a A driving-shaft '13 runs in hearings on cross-bars supported by the intermediate legs a and a A shaft C is similarly supported and is driven by means of a pinion b of the shaft B, which meshes witha gear-wheel c on the shaft C. A roll of paper, cardboard, strawboard, or other suitable material is supported on arms a and (1 extending horizontally from the rear legs a and a, the roll having arod which extends through an axial hole therein and the ends of such rod being supported in notches in the arms a and u At the rear end of the bed is a trough D for containing glue and having a glue-applying roll d, supported in bearings on a frame (1 that is adapted to slide on the upper edges of the trough, such frame plying roll 01 extends into the glue and by means of the springs d and d is drawn against the strip as it passes over the roll E, such roll being positioned to engage the strip near its edge and being thus made to partake of the motion of the strip and to carry the glue up and apply it thereto, the strip being drawn forward by rolls at the forward end of the bed a, such rolls being hereinafter described.
In front of the roll E is a pair of brackets G and G, in the lower portion of which is mounted a plain roll 9, above which is a scorerroll 9'', the latter having bearing in blocks 9 and 9 which are mounted in ways in the brackets G and G, such blocks being pressed toward the rollgby screws g and g threaded in the brackets. The scorer-roll has four circular knives g and g mounted on its circumference, the knives being for the purpose of scoring the strip F where it is to be bent to form the corners of the shuck. The roll g has on its shaft a sprocket-wheel which is connected by a sprocket-chain g with a sprocket-wheel g on the shaft C. A small roll H is mounted on the bed ain front of the roll g, and the strip F is supported thereon as it passes forward over the bed. From the scoring mechanism the strip passes to the front-folding device I, which device consists of a base i, from which rise two arms z" and 11, which are inclined to each other and which are connected at the top by a bar 1, having an arm 2' depending therefrom. To one of the arms i a gage i is secured by a screw 15 passing through a slot therein, such gage having an arm 11, which extends at right angles to the arm, the lower edge of such arm being adapted to engage and guide one edge of the strip F. A second gage 77 is similarly secured to the other arm '21, and such formed thereon, the under side of the arm i is secured by a screw to the'arm d second gage has an arm i extending crosswise ofsuch arm t and having a shoulder of engaging and guiding an edge of the strip F and the shoulder c3 serving to keep such edge of the strip against the arm 1'. To the arm 1' of the bar 2' is secured a folding-blade 1 such blade having a slotted shank i which slots through which pass the screws which secure the gages and folding-blade to their supports enable these parts to be adjusted for various widths of strips and various positions of the scoresin such strips. From the folding device I the strip F passes between vertical plates Kand K, which press together the portions of the strip which are 011 opposite sides of the score that was engaged by the folding-blade- The plate K is bolted to the bed a by means of a flange on such plate, and the plate K is secured to the plate K by means of screws passing through slots in the plate K and threaded into holes in the plate K. The plate K is shorter than the plate K, so that it will not engage the glued edge of the strip F. The entrance of the space between the.plates K and K is flaring to facilitate the entrance of the paper. From the plates K and K the strip F passes to a folding device L, which consists of a plate secured to the bed a bya flange and having a plate Z and a flap-turner Z secured thereto. The plate I is short and is secured to the plate Z by screws passing through slots in said plate Z, so that such plate can be adjusted vertically to enable it' to engage the strip at and below the level of the flap when doubled over. The flapturner Z is secured to ,the plate Zby screws which pass through slots in the latter plate and are threadedinto the former plate. The flapturner has on its under side a Warped surface which engages the flap of the strip F and turns it over, so that its glued surface is pressed against the opposite portion of the strip. From the folding device L the strip passes between two vertical rollers M and M, the latter being geared together and being mounted on vertical shafts m and m, respectively, which are journaled below in the bed a and above in a plate m that is supported on pillars m and m rising from'the bed a. The shaft m is extended below the bed and provided with a bevel-gear 'm, which engages a a bevel-gear c on the shaft 0. The rollers M and M serve to press the flap of the strip F into firm contact with the opposite edge of the strip. From the rolls M and M the strip passes to a printing device N, consisting of an upper platen-roll n and a lower impression-roll, the rolls being geared together and the upper roll having inking-rolls n and'n In front of the printing device is a bridgepiece 0, which consists of a bar whose ends are bolted to the bed and from which ends rise inclined portions that support a-horizontal central portion. Two guides and o are adjustably bolted to the bridge-piece and The serve to keep the strip F centrally over the table. An apron. P is secured to the bridgepiece and extends horizontally rearward therefrom, its rear end portion being inclined downward and secured to the bed a. The strip after leaving the rolls M and M is by means of the apron and bridge-piece given a quarter-turn, so that it lies horizontally across the bed at the bridge-piece.
In front of the printing device N is a pair of brackets Q and Q, which are bolted to the bed and connected at the top by a shaft q. Two pairs of rolls q" and g and g and g are journaled in the brackets Q and Q, the bearing-boxes of the upper one of each of the pairs of rolls being mounted in vertical guides and being forced down by screws threaded in the brackets. The shafts of the second pair of rolls g and g are extended beyond one of the brackets and provided with interrneshing gear-wheels g and q". The shaft of the lower roll also has a sprocket-gear g, which is connected with a sprocket-gear g on the shaft 0 by a sprocket chain q. The gear g also meshes with a gear Q10 on the shaft g, which in turn meshes with a gear g on the shaft of the roll (1 and the latter gear meshes with a gear (1 on the shaft of the roll q. The shaft of the roll g has a sprocket-gear which is connected bya sprocket-chain with a similar gear on the shaft of the upper printing-roll, and the printing mechanism is thus driven. The rolls q and q? constitute the feeding-rolls, and they travel at a speed somewhat greater than that of the pressing-rolls M and M, so that the strip is kept under tension between such pairs of rolls. The roll (1 has a series of knives q and Q13 radially secured in its periphery, such knives serving to out against the roll q and sever the stripF into shuck lengths. A bridge-piece R, similar to the bridge-piece O and having similar guides r and r, is bolted 'to the bed in front of the brackets Q and Q.
A pair of small feed-rolls S and S is journaled in the brackets Q and Q just in front of the rolls g and q", the upper of which feed-rolls has a belt-pulley s on its shaft, over which pulley and a pulley s on the shaft of the roll q runs a belt 8 From the small feedrolls S and S to the front end of the bed (1 ex; tends a table T, whosefront end is supported by a pair of legs 15 and t, which are secured to the bed. Guides 6 and t for the edges of the shncks are secured to the table,and the shncks are prevented from rising or buckling by an overhanging guide which is supported by cross-pieces extending from one of the guides t. Beneath the table T is a glue-pan U, in which dips a glue-applying roll 'Lb, whose upper edge extends to the upper surface of the 'cle. An opening 2) is formed in the'table above the sand-receptacle, so that the paddle-wheel can throw the sand against the glued side of the shucks. The sand-receptacle is provided with a supply-opening c at one side of the table. The glue-applying Wheel has on one end of its shaft asprocketwheel, which is connected by asprocket-chain with a similar wheel on the shaft of the roll g The opposite end of the shaft of the glueapplying roll also carries a sprocket-wheel, which is connected bya sprocket-chain with a similar wheel on the paddle-wheel shaft.
In the operation of my machine the strip F is drawn from the roll of material and is threaded over the roll (1 and around the roll E, at which point the glue-applyin g roll d ap-' plies glue to the edge of the strip which is to form the flap. The strip then passes under the scoring-roll, where the four scores f, f, f, and f that are to form the corners of the boxes, are made. The score f is nearest the glued edge, and the other scores occur in succession toward the opposite edge of the strip. From the scoring-roll the strip passes through the folding device I, its edges being guided by the gages v1 and F, so that the folding-bladed engages one of the middle scores in order that the flap of the strip when the latter is folded on such score shall extend beyond the opposite edge of the strip. After leaving the folding device I the strip passes between the plates K and K, where the two portions of the strip on opposite sides of the score, acted upon by the folding-blade, are folded closely against each other, the glue on the flap not being disturbed, owing to the fact that the plate K does not extend to the level of the glue. The warped surface of the folding device L turns over the glued flap and presses it against and secures it to the outer surface of the opposite portion of the strip. The folded and glued strip is now pressed perfectly flat by the pressing-rolls M and M, after leaving which it is given a quarter-turn on its axis and passes through the printing device N, the apron P and the bridge-piece O, with its guides o and 0, serving to direct the strip horizontally and centrally into the printing device. From ,the printing device the strip passes over the bridge-piece It, being engaged by its guides 'r' and a", and is drawn forward by the feeding-rolls q and g the latter traveling at a slightly-greater speed than the pressingrolls, so that the strip shall be kept under tension between these pairs of rolls to prevent the glued parts of the flap from separating. After passing the feeding-rolls the strip is severed by the cutting-roll into shuck lengths, the latter being caught by the small feed-rolls S and S between the guides i and t on the table T. Here the shucks are pressed against the glue-applying roll it by the spring to and receive the glue by which the sand is to be s'ecured to the shuck. The shucks then pass over the sand-receptacle, and sand is thrown through the opening 1; by the paddle-wheel and comes in contact with the glued portion of the shuck. The shuck then passes oi the table T and is completed and ready to be opened merely by a lateral pressure.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is 1. In a machine for making box-shucks, a folding device for acting on a scored strip, such device consisting of a blade which acts only on a score of the strip, parts for turning the outer surfaces of the strip, and a gage for 'an edge'of the strip, such gage having a shoulder which bears against the inner surface of the strip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' 2. In a machine for making box-shucks, the combination of means for scoring a strip, means for gluing the strip near one edge thereof, a folding blade which acts only on a score of the strip, parts for turning the outer surfaces of the strip, a gage for the glued edge of the strip, and a gage for theopposite edge of the strip, such latter gage having a shoulder which bears against the inner surface of the strip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a machine for making box-shucks, the combination with scoring devices, of a folding device consisting of a triangular frame, gages for the edges of the strip, such gages being on sides of the frame, and a foldingblade on the top of the frame and extending toward the angle of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. In a machine for making box-shucks, the combination with scoring devices, of a folding device consisting of a triangular frame, gages for the edges of the strip, such gages being adjustably secured on the sides of the frame, and a folding-blade adjustably secured on the top of the frame and extending toward the angle of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a machine for making match-box shucks,the sh lick-sanding devices,comprising a table, a glue pan beneath the table, a gluewheel running in said pan and'extending into an opening in said table, aleaf-spring extending over said opening and adapted to press the shucks against the glue-wheel, a sand-receptacle below the table, a wheel for throwing sand up through an opening in said table against the glued shuck, a pair of guides on said table for the shuck, and an overhanging guide supported between the said pair of guides, substantially as and for the purpose described.
