J. J. TAYLOR, 2d.
CARPET STRETGHER. M No. 306.548. Patented Oct. 14, 1884.

Unrrnn STATES PATENT Urrrcn.
JOHN J. TAYLOR, 2D, OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM H. PIOKETT, OF SAME PLACE.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,548, dated October 14, 1884.
Application filed March 21, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TAYLOR, 2d, of Warren, in the county of WVarren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the combination, with a grooved bar, of a sliding rack in the same, which rack has its front end pivoted on the grooved bar. A U-shaped frame provided at its ends with pointed heads for holding it in place is provided with a Wire or rod, which serves as a fulcrum for the lever which is engaged with the teeth of the rack, and is used for moving the rack in the direction of its length.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal View of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the fulcrum-frame. Fig. 4: is a side view of the lever. Fig. 5 is a perspectim view of the clamp and rack.
A bar, A, is providedin its upper surface with a longitudinal groove, A, in which a rack, B, is held to slide longitudinally, which rack has one end pivoted to link-bars O, the other ends of which are pivoted to the arm D of a clamp, D, pivoted in upwardly-projecting jaws E on the widened and flattened end of the bar A. The jaws E are set back a short distance from the end edge of the flattened part E. A U-shaped rod or frame, F, is provided at each end with a head, G, having the lower end pointed, and on the shanks of the frame F a V-shaped rod or wire, H, is held between the open and closed ends of the frame F. A lever, J, has its lower end beveled to fit in between the teeth of the rack B and en pet and below the frame F. The edge of the (No.1nodel.)
lever J is hooked on the wire or rod H, and
the upper end of the lever J is pulled in the direction of the arrow a; whereby the lower end will be moved in the inverse direction of the arrow a, thereby moving rack B in the inverse direction of the arrow (1, and causing the clamp D to clamp the edge of the carpet on the part E of the bar A, whereby the edge of the carpet is held securely. If the lever J is now moved farther in the direction of the arrow a, the rack B and the bar A will be moved in the inverse direction of the arrow a, and the edge of the carpet will be moved toward thewall that is, the carpet is stretched. The rod H acts as fulcrum and support for the lever J, and is held securely in place by the heads G of the frame F, whereas the other parts are movable. The rack B and the plate H are locked in place after the carpet has been stretched by pressing the frame F down, so as to engage its cross-piece with the teeth of the rack B, thus preventing the rack from sliding back in the direction of the arrow c.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with the grooved bar A, of the sliding rack B, the clamp-lever D, pivoted on the bar A and connected with the rack B by links 0, and of a fulcrum-frame and a lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a carpetstretcher, the combination, with the grooved bar A, of the sliding rack B, the clamp-lever D, pivoted on the bar A and connected with the rack B by links 0, the frame F, having pointed heads, the rod or wire H, held on the frame F, and of the lever J, provided with a hook, L, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination,
with the grooved bar A, having flattened end E, and jaws E, of the rack 13, the clamp D, hinged on the jaws E, the links 0, the frame F, having pointed heads G, the wire or rod H, on the frame F, and of the lever J, provided with a hook, L, substantially as herein shown and described.
Witnesses: JOHN J. TAYLOR, '21),
JAMES W. KITCHEN, S. M. HALL.
