CARPET-STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,411, dated May 4-, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSMAN C. DU SOUOHET, of Varsaw, Hancock county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following isafull, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved carpet-stretcher, which is strong and durable, and can be operated very easily.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is aside view of the extension-pole. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the gripping end of the device, and Fig. 4 is an enlargedlongitudinal sectional elevation of the same.

The box A is open at both ends, and in the same a sliding rack, B, is placed, which engages with a cog-wheel, O, mounted on a pivot, D, held on jaws D on the box, the cog-wheel O passing through a longitudinal slot, 0, in the top of the box A. On the pivot D a forked lever, E, is mounted, the cog-wheel 0 being between the prongs of said forked lever E. A hoolepawl, F, which can engage with the teeth of the cog-wheel C,is pivoted to the lever E. A hook-pawl, G, is pivoted on one end of the box A, and serves to engage with the teeth of the rack B, A clamp-plate, H, having an upwardly-projecting flange, H, on its end, is held on the under sideof the rack B by a screw, J, passed through a longitudinal slot, J, in the plate H, thus permitting said plate to slide at the end part of the rackbar. A clamp-plate, K, is pivoted on upwardly-projecting jaws K on the plate H. The upper inner end of the clamp-plate K is above a head or projection, L, on the end of the rack-bar B.

The brace-bars M and N each have ahasp, O, at one end, one bar passing through the hasp of the other.

A screw, 1, is used for locking the bars in place.

The operation is as follows: The edge of the carpet Q, is passed over the flange H, and the end of the clamp-plate K is placed on the lapped part of the carpet. The lever E is swung down in the direction of the arrow 7), and the cog-wheel G is revolved in-such a direction as to move the rack-bar B in the direction of the arrow a. The projection L, acting on the end of the clamp-plate K, presses the other end of the plate K upon the carpet, whereby the carpet is held securely. The rack-bar being moved in the direction of the arrow at, the carpet is stretched. The p,awl F is then raised and the lever E is swung in the inverse direction of the arrow 1), the pawl is again engaged with the cog-wheel and the lever E is swung in the direction of the arrow 1), and so on, the pawl G acting to hold the bar B from backward movement.

The end of one pole is passed into the end of the box A,and the other rested against that wall opposite the one to which the carpet is to be moved.

Having thus described my invention, I elai m as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* 1. In a carpetstreteher, the combination, with a box, of a raek-bar passed through the same, a clamp consisting of pivoted jaws having its members in rear of the pivot extended on opposite sides of the end of the rackbar, and the lower member being in sliding connection with the rack-bar, and means for operating the rack-bar, whereby when the rackbar slides forward between the members of the clamp their outer ends will be forced together, substantially as set forth.

2. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with a box,of the rack L, having the head or projection L, the sliding clamp-plate H on the end of the rack-bar, and the clamp-plate K, pivoted on the plate H, substantially as herein shown and described.

In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with the box A, of the rack B, having the head or projection L on one end, the slotted clampplate H, having the flange H on its end, the screw J, the clamp-plate K, pivoted on the plate H, and devices for moving the rackbar in the box, substantially as herein shown and described.
