FIG. 2
EfZ/VEST 7. HILL INVENTOR.
TOR/V5) Patented Nov. 20, 1962 This application relates generally to hinge and clamp devices, and, more particularly, it pertains to a novel clamp and hinge arrangement for use with gates in fence structures.
It is an object of this invention to provide a new type of clamp and binge arrangement for use with gates in fences.
Another object of this invention is to provide a clamp and hinge arrangement which is economical to manufacture, which is efiicient and reliable in operational use, and which can be easily installed in and removed from a fence structure.
Another object of this invention is to provide a gate clamp and hinge arrangement which is simple in construction, and which is easy to install in a fence structure for holding a gate in operational position.
These and other objects and attendant advantages of this invention will become more readily apparent from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a fence and gate structure showing the novel clamp and binge arrangement incorporating features of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross section taken along line 22 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a cross section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring now to FIG. 1 of the drawings, there is illustrated two spaced ironwork or similar type railings 12 having a conventional folding gate mounted therebetween. The folding gate 10 is provided at its ends with end members 16, which are connected to the respective fence railing end posts 14 of the railings 12 by means of fittings 18 and members 40.
Referring now to FIGS. 2 and 3 of the drawings in addition to FIG. 1, the members 40 are shown in greater detail. Each hinge member 40, as used on the left side of the gate 10, as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings, is used as a hinge, while member 40 is used as a locking eye for the right side of the gate 10, as shown on the right side of FIG. 1.
As shown in FIG. 2, each member 40 is of U-shape and consists of parallel spaced side plates 42 having a tongue 44 on one end thereof with an elongated aperture 46 being provided in the tongue. This tongue 44 extending outwardly from the upper edge of the member 40.
The side plates 42 of each member 40 are placed about the gate posts 14 and are held in operative position by means of a bolt and nut arrangement 48, as illustrated best in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Each fitting 18 for the end members 16 is provided with a narrow end 20 having a slot 22 provided therein for receiving the tongue 44 of the member 40. A latching hook 24 having a latch hook spring 25 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 is used to hold the fitting 18 and the member 40 in operational position to close and latch the gate 10.
The latch hook spring 25 is so disposed so as to require compression of the spring 25 to allow release of the tongue 44 from engagement with the latching hook 24. It is to be noted that pins 26 are utilized to lock the fittings 18 for the gate 10 to the members 40 by passing the pins through the elongated apertures 46 in the members 40.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in the light of the above teachings. It is, therefore, to be understood that within the scope of the appended claim the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically disclosed.
What is claimed is:
A clamp and hinge arrangement for mounting a gate to a structural member, comprising, a folded substantially rectangular shaped sheet metal member open at one end and having a base at its opposite end and parallel vertically spaced sides for encompassing and engaging the surfaces of a structural member and a horizontally mounted tongue extending outwardly from said base of said rectangular shaped member and having an apertured slot therein, a folded sheet metal fitting having a first pair of parallel vertically spaced sides for encompassing and engaging surfaces of a gate and a second pair of vertically spaced sides arranged parallel to the first pair of parallel vertically spaced sides and spaced laterally therefrom, said second pair of parallel vertically spaced sides of said folded sheet metal fitting being provided with a horizontal and transversely arranged slot to receive said horizontal tongue of said folded sheet metal member, and a hinge pin device for coupling said metal member and said fitting together consisting of a latch hook receivable in said apertured slot of said tongue when said latch hook is introduced between said second pair of vertically spaced sides of said folded sheet metal fitting and a latch hook spring disposed so as to require compression of said latch hook spring to allow release of said tongue from engagement with said latch hook.
