Filed Aug. 10, 1961, Ser. No. 130,507 3 Claims. (Cl. 4113) This invention relates to improvements in bed pans and is more particularly concerned with a disposable bed pan.
It is an object of this invention to provide a bed pan having an inflatable ring cushion and a disposable receptacle within the ring cushion.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a disposable bed pan unit having closure means so as to permit easy removal and disposal thereof.
An additional object of this invention is to provide an article of the character described which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture so as to encourage the wide distribution and use thereof.
Other objects, features and advantages of my invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds, particularly when taken with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view through line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a plastic disposable liner in accord with the invention; and
FIGURE 4 shows the liner of FIGURE 3 in form for disposal.
As shown the bed pan comprises an inflatable tube 1 having an air chamber 8 and an air inlet 17. Suitably, this member may be composed of rubber or of plastic. Tube 1 is mounted in a suitable groove 1A of a base 3 to which are secured flaps 2 and straps 4 for securing the unit to a bed or a chair, or to the patient.
The disposable bed pan unit 18 comprises a waterproof plastic bag with an outer flange 12, adapted to partially envelop and to rest on the top of tube 1 as shown. A lower compartment 7 is adapted to enclose human excrement deposited therein.
Between flange 12 and compartment 7, there is provided a peripherally disposed inwardly extending lip 16 comprised of a contoured thickness substantially greater than the wall thickness of the remaining portions of the said disposable bed pan unit 18. Accordingly, it will be appreciated that the supporting surface provided by the said bed pan unit 18 is increased by dint of the inwardly extending contour of the lip 16 as shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing, the rigidity of the supporting surface being increased as well by virtue of the contour provided, thus generally improving the supporting ability of the device. The base 3 includes a contoured abutment 3A which prevents excessive compression of the tube by pro viding additional supporting surface.
Closing strings 13 are provided around the outer periphery of flange 12 and lip 16. A tab 15 is provided for removing unit 18. FIGURE 4 shows how these strings may close the unit after use. The bed pan can be inflated with the patient on the bed pan in its deflated form thereby saving exertion and time by nurse and patient.
As shown on FIGURE 2, the abutment 3A forms an enclosure to receive the lower compartment of the disposable unit. An index 19 is provided to measure the inflation required in the tube.
3,0flL8420 Patented Nov. 6, 1962 It will be evident that the disposable unit together with the contents are easily and safely discardable. A large supply of bags can be easily stored for replacement. Each bag has a handle 6 at its underside for emptying purposes.
It is apparent that this invention provides a convenient comfortable bed pan for patients confined to beds or wheelchairs. Because of its disposable and economic features, it requires a minimum of maintanance or cleaning and will thereby result in smaller labor expenditures in hospitals. It will also reduce inconvenience and pain of the patient by decreasing the amount of movement and effort necessary.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided the changes all fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus disclosed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An inflatable bed pan comprising in combination, an inflatable member having a central cavity disposed therein, a disposable member having an outer flange adapted to rest on the upper surface of said inflatable member, a first closing string slidably arranged within the periphery of said outer flange, a lower compartment for excrement adapted to depend within said cavity, said lower compartment having an open upper end and a closed lower end, an inwardly extending lip integrally contoured at said upper end, and a second closing string slidably arranged peripherally of said inwardly extending lip.
2. An inflatable bed pan comprising in combination, an inflatable member having a central cavity disposed therein, a disposable member having an outer flange adapted to rest on the upper surface of said inflatable member, a first closing string slidably arranged within the periphery of said outer flange, a lower compartment for excrement adapted to depend within said cavity, said lower compartment having an open upper end and a closed lower end, an inwardly extending lip integrally contoured at said upper end, a second closing string slidably arranged within the periphery of said upper end, and a handle projecting downwardly and externally of said closed lower end.
3. An inflatable bed pan comprising in combination, an inflatable member having a central cavity disposed therein, a disposable member having a supporting flange adapted to rest on the upper surface of said inflatable member and a lower compartment for excrement to fit in said cavity in further combination with a base adapted to receive and support the inflatable member, said disposable member including a lip partially enclosing the compartment and the base including an enclosure to receive the compartment when being used and an abutment to provide additional support for the inflatable member to accommodate heavier patients.
