No. 802,439 3 Claims. (Cl. 221-246) This invention relates to a novel and useful cigarette dispenser, and more particularly to a cigarette dispenser which may be placed on a metal surface having magnetic qualities and held in position thereon by means of mag nets secured to the under side of the dispenser.
The main object of this invention is to provide a cigarette dispenser for receiving a supply of cigarettes and from which cigarettes may be dispensed one at a time.
A further object of this invention, in accordance with the preceding objects, is to provide a cigarette dispenser having a sliding door which may be manipulated for the purpose of dispensing a cigarette and which will be returned to its closed position by means of a spring when the sliding door is released.
A still further object of this invention, in accordance with the preceding objects, is to provide a cigarette dispenser having retaining walls therein a spaced distance from the point where the cigarettes are dispensed, so that the cigarettes will not pile up at a point from which they are dispensed but will move in a single layer theretoward.
Yet a further object of this invention, in accordance with the preceding objects, is to provide a cigarette dispenser which will require only one hand to operate, and one which will dispense cigarettes from the dispenser closely adjacent the hand of a person operating the dispenser, thus allowing that person to grasp the cigarette with the fingers of that hand without moving the latter.
A still further object of this invention, in accordance with the preceding objects, is to provide a cigarette dispenser which will be useful, of strong construction, and one which will lend itself to simple forms of manufacture thereby reducing the manufacturing cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the invention shown supported by a suitable metallic surface having magnetic qualities with parts of the surface being broken away, and with the sliding door in the operating position after having dispensed a cigarette and before the door has been allowed to return to its closed position;
FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view of the device;
FIGURE 3 is a rear elevational view of the device showing the manner in which the top is hinged;
FIGURE 4 is a side elevational view showing the right side of the device as seen in FIG. 2;
FIGURE 5 is a side elcvational view showing the left side of the device as shown in FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 6 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 6-6 of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 7 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view of the device taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 77 of FIGURE 2 shown with the sliding door in the operated position, and its closed position being shown in phantom lines.
Referring now more specifically to FIGURE 1 of the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the cigarette dispenser comprising the present invention shown resting upon an inclined metallic surface 11 having magnetic qualities. The dispenser 10 is in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped box-like structure having a front wall 12 controlled by a sliding front door 13, a top wall 14, side walls 16 and 18, a bottom wall 20 and a rear wall 22.
Referring now to FIGURE 6 of the drawings, the rear portion of the top 14 is secured to rear wall 22 by means of suitably mounted hinges 24 and has a retaining Wall 26 depending therefrom a spaced distance from the front wall 12. The retaining wall .26 extends transversely of the dispenser 10 and is substantially at right angles to the top 14. Secured to the bottom wall 20 are magnets 28 which may be fastened thereto by any suitable means such as by gluing.
Attention being now directed to FIGURE 7 of the drawings, it will be seen that projecting outwardly from sliding door 13 is a knob 30 which is used to slide the front door 13 to the right to dispense cigarettes one at a time from the dispenser 10. The front door 13 has upper and lower rearwardly extending horizontal flanges 32 and 34 terminating respectively in a downwardly directed substantially vertical flange 36 and an upwardly extending substantially vertical flange 38. Vertical flange 38 and horizontal flange 34 form an upwardly opening pocket 39 on the lower edge of door 13.
With attention drawn now more particularly to FIG- URES l and 6 in the drawings, the front door 13 has on one end a vertical rearwardly extending flange 40 which is complementary to and received within notch 42 formed in the corresponding side wall 18 when the sliding front door 13 is in the closed position. Formed in front wall 12 is a horizontal slot 54 which extends from the left side of the dispenser 10 to approximately the center of the front wall 12. The slot 54 receives the vertical flange 40 thus limiting the sliding movement of the sliding door 13.
Formed in the front section of the top Wall 14 adjacent the front wall of the dispenser 10 is a transversely extending slot or groove 44, see FIGURE 1, which slidingly receives the downwardly extending vertical flange 36. Formed on the bottom wall 20 adjacent the front r wall 12 is a transversely and downwardly extending projection 46, see FIGURE 6, which is slidingly received between the upwardly extending vertical flange 3-8 and the inner face of the door 13. The slot 44 extends transversely of top wall 14 from a point a spaced distance from the side thereof adjacent side 18 through the opposite side thereof. In this manner, the door 13 is slidingly mounted upon the dispenser 10 and may be moved between the two positions indicated in FIGURE 7.
The rearwardly extending vertical flange 40 is of greater height than the diameter of a cigarette, and of r less width than the diameter of a cigarette.
Secured in any convenient manner to either the side wall 16 or the rearwardly extending vertical flange 40 is a shaft or rod 48 about which is secured compression spring 50, see FIGURES 6 and 7. One end of compression spring 50 is engaged with the inner surface of rearwardly extending vertical flange 40, and the other end is yieldingly engaged with the inner surface of the side wall 16. As the sliding front door 13 is moved to the dispensing position, compression spring 50 is compressed and upon the releasing of the front door 13 compression spring 50 will return the latter to its closed position.
As can best be seen by FIGURES 6 and 7 the cigarettes 52 are dispensed from the dispenser 10 one at a time by the engagement of the inner face of the rearwardly extending vertical flange 40 against the end of a cigarette 52, see FIGURE 7. As the rearwardly extending flange 40 is moved toward side wall 16, a cigarette is moved through the opening 55 formed in side wall 16 at the juncture between the front wall 12 and the bottom wall 20.
It is to be understood that although the dispenser has been shown by the drawings to be constructed of a plastic material, that any convenient material may be used in the manufacture of the dispenser. Since the dispenser has been shown constructed of a plastic material, it is to be understood that, the front door 13 has inherent elastic qualities enabling it to be snapped into and out of engagement with the dispenser. Accordingly, as it becomes necessary to replenish the supply of cigarettes 52 within the dispenser 10, either the front door may be removed, or the front door 13 may be merely moved to an open position whereby the cigarettes 52 may then be placed within the dispenser 10.
In operation, the cigarettes 52 are first placed within the dispenser 10 and then the latter is placed upon a metallic surface and held in position thereon by means of magnets 28. As it is desired to obtain a cigarette, the sliding door 13 may be moved so that the rearwardly extending vertical flange 40 will move from its position within slot 42 toward side wall 16 which will force a cigarette 52 through the opening 55. When the sliding door 13 is released, compression spring 50 will return it to its normal closed position while the cigarette remains in a position protruding through the opening 55 where it may then be readily removed from the dispenser 10.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A cigarette dispenser comprising a box-like structure having front and rear walls, top and bottom walls, and two side walls, said front wall having a horizontal slot therein, a door, means slidingly securing said door to said dispenser in overlying relation to said front wall, an opening in one of said side walls adjacent said front and bottom walls, and means on said door projecting into said dispenser through said slot adapted to engage and dispense a cigarette from said dispenser through said opening upon the sliding movement of said door from a closed position toward said side having said opening therein, said top wall having a vertical retaining wall depending therefrom a spaced distance from and parallel to said front wall, the lower end of said retaining wall being spaced from said bottom wall a distance slightly greater than the diameter of a cigarette, means yieldingly urging said door to said closed position, said slot extending from a point intermediate said side walls through the side wall remote from said opening, a notch in alignment with and equal in height to said slot formed in said last-mentioned side wall opposite said opening, said dispensing means including a vertical rearwardly extending flange formed on the end of said door remote from said opening receivable within said notch and slidably received within said slot, said urging means comprising a compression coil spring secured between said rearwardly extending vertical flange and said side Wall remote from said notch.
2. A cigarette dispenser comprising a box-like strueture having front and rear walls, top and bottom walls, and two side walls, said front wall having a horizontal slot therein, a door, means slidingly securing said door to said dispenser in overlying relation to said front wall, an opening in one of said side walls adjacent said front and bottom walls, and means on said door projecting into said dispenser through said slot adapted to engage and dispense a cigarette from said dispenser through said opening upon the sliding movement of said door from a closed position toward said side having said opening therein, said top wall being hinged to said rear wall and comprising a swinging closure for said box-like structure through which cigarettes may be placed within the dispenser, said top wall having a vertical retaining wall depending therefrom a spaced distance from and parallel to said front wall, the lower end of said retaining wall being spaced from said bottom wall a distance slightly greater than the diameter of a cigarette, means yieldingly urging said door to said closed position, said slot extending from a point intermediate said side walls through the side wall remote from said opening, a notch in alignment with and equal in height to said slot formed in said lastmentioned side wall opposite said opening, said dispensing means including a vertical rearwardly extending flange formed on the end of said door remote from said opening receivable within said notch and slidably received within said slot, said urging means comprising a compression coil spring secured between said rearwardly extending vertical flange and said side wall remote from said notch, a slot formed in said top wall adjacent and paralleling said front wall and extending from a point a spaced distance from said side wall remote from said opening and opening through the side edge of said top wall adjacent said opening, a downwardly depending projection on said bottom wall adjacent and parallel to said front wall, and an upwardly opening pocket formed on the lower edge of said door extending longitudinally therealong, a rearwardly extending horizontal flange formed on the upper edge of said door terminating in a downwardly directed vertical flange, said securing means comprising said last mentioned vertical flange slidingly received in said top wall slot and said depending projection slidingly received in said pocket, said front wall being constructed of a resilient material.
3. The combination of claim 2 including means on said dispenser adapted to retain the latter upon a metallic surface, said retaining means comprising magnets secured to the bottom of said dispenser.
